Book excerpt: This book is addressed to mathematics and physics students who want to develop an interdisciplinary view of mathematics, from the age of Riemann, Poincaré and Darboux to basic tools of modern mathematics. It enables them to acquire the sensibility necessary for the formulation and solution of difficult problems, with an emphasis on concepts, rigour and creativity. It consists of eight self-contained parts: ordinary differential equations; linear elliptic equations; calculus of variations; linear and non-linear hyperbolic equations; parabolic equations; Fuchsian functions and non-linear equations; the functional equations of number theory; pseudo-differential operators and pseudo-differential equations. The author leads readers through the original papers and introduces new concepts, with a selection of topics and examples that are of high pedagogical value.

Book Synopsis Mathematics and Physics for Nanotechnology by : Paolo Di Sia
Download or read book Mathematics and Physics for Nanotechnology written by Paolo Di Sia and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanobiotechnology is a new interdisciplinary science with revolutionary perspectives arising from the fact that at nanosize the behaviour and characteristics of matter change with respect to ordinary macroscopic dimensions. Nanotechnology is a new way for producing and getting materials, structures and devices with greatly improved or completely new properties and functionalities. This book provides an introductory overview of the nanobiotechnology world along with a general technical framework about mathematical modelling through which we today study the phenomena of charge transport at the nanometer level. Although it is not a purely mathematics or physics book, it introduces the basic mathematical and physical notions that are important and necessary for theory and applications in nanobiotechnology. Therefore, it can be considered an extended formulary of basic and advanced concepts. It can be the starting point for discussions and insights and can be used for further developments in mathematical–physical modelling linked to the nanobiotechnology world. The book is dedicated to all those who follow their ideas in life and pursue their choices with determination and firmness, in a free and independent way.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Geometry between Tradition and Future by : Gilberto Bini
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry between Tradition and Future written by Gilberto Bini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incredible season for algebraic geometry flourished in Italy between 1860, when Luigi Cremona was assigned the chair of Geometria Superiore in Bologna, and 1959, when Francesco Severi published the last volume of the treatise on algebraic systems over a surface and an algebraic variety. This century-long season has had a prominent influence on the evolution of complex algebraic geometry - both at the national and international levels - and still inspires modern research in the area. "Algebraic geometry in Italy between tradition and future" is a collection of contributions aiming at presenting some of these powerful ideas and their connection to contemporary and, if possible, future developments, such as Cremonian transformations, birational classification of high-dimensional varieties starting from Gino Fano, the life and works of Guido Castelnuovo, Francesco Severi's mathematical library, etc. The presentation is enriched by the viewpoint of various researchers of the history of mathematics, who describe the cultural milieu and tell about the bios of some of the most famous mathematicians of those times.

Book Synopsis Protest, Popular Culture and Tradition in Modern and Contemporary Western Europe by : Ilaria Favretto
Download or read book Protest, Popular Culture and Tradition in Modern and Contemporary Western Europe written by Ilaria Favretto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mock funerals, effigy parading, smearing with eggs and tomatoes, pot-banging and Carnival street theatre, arson and ransacking: all these seemingly archaic forms of action have been regular features of modern European protest, from the 19th to the 21st century. In a wide chronological and geographical framework, this book analyses the uses, meanings, functions and reactivations of folk imagery, behaviour and language in modern collective action. The authors examine the role of protest actors as diverse as peasants, liberal movements, nationalist and separatist parties, anarchists, workers, students, right-wing activists and the global justice movement. So-called traditional repertoires have long been described as residual and obsolete. This book challenges the conventional distinction between pre-industrial and post-1789 forms of collective action, which continues to operate as a powerful dichotomy in the understanding of protest, and casts new light on rituals and symbolic performances that, albeit poorly understood and deciphered, are integral to our protest repertoire.

Book Synopsis Dante's Plurilingualism by : Sara Fortuna
Download or read book Dante's Plurilingualism written by Sara Fortuna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante's conception of language is encompassed in all his works and can be understood in terms of a strenuous defence of the volgare in tension with the prestige of Latin. By bringing together different approaches, from literary studies to philosophy and history, from aesthetics to queer studies, from psychoanalysis to linguistics, this volume offers new critical insights on the question of Dantes language, engaging with both the philosophical works characterized by an original project of vulgarization, and the poetic works, which perform a new language in an innovative and self-reflexive way. In particular, Dantes Plurilingualism explores the rich and complex way in which Dantes linguistic theory and praxis both informs and reflects an original configuration of the relationship between authority, knowledge and identity that continues to be fascinated by an ideal of unity but is also imbued with a strong element of subjectivity and opens up towards multiplicity and modernity.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Elastic Equilibrium by : Giuseppe Grioli
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elastic Equilibrium written by Giuseppe Grioli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not my intention to present a treatise of elasticity in the follow ing pages. The size of the volume would not permit it, and, on the other hand, there are already excellent treatises. Instead, my aim is to develop some subjects not considered in the best known treatises of elasticity but nevertheless basic, either from the physical or the analytical point of view, if one is to establish a complete theory of elasticity. The material presented here is taken from original papers, generally very recent, and concerning, often, open questions still being studied by mathematicians. Most of the problems are from the theory of finite deformations [non-linear theory], but a part of this book concerns the theory of small deformations [linear theory], partly for its interest in many practical questions and partly because the analytical study of the theory of finite strain may be based on the infinitesimal one.
Book Synopsis Psychology in Black and White by : Sergio Salvatore
Download or read book Psychology in Black and White written by Sergio Salvatore and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is long awaited within the contemporarily creative field of cultural psychologies. It is a theoretical synthesis that is at the level of innovations that Sigmund Freud, James Mark Baldwin, William Stern, Kurt Lewin, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and Jan Smedslund have brought into psychology over the past century. Here we can observe a creative solution to integrating cultural psychology with the rich traditions of psychodynamic perspectives, without repeating the conceptual impasses in which many psychoanalytic perspectives have become caught.
