Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles from many of the main contributors to recent progress in stochastic analysis are included in this volume, which provides a snapshot of the current state of the area and its ongoing developments. It constitutes the proceedings of the conference on "Stochastic Analysis and Applications" held at the University of Oxford and the Oxford-Man Institute during 23-27 September, 2013. The conference honored the 60th birthday of Professor Terry Lyons FLSW FRSE FRS, Wallis Professor of Mathematics, University of Oxford. Terry Lyons is one of the leaders in the field of stochastic analysis. His introduction of the notion of rough paths has revolutionized the field, both in theory and in practice. Stochastic Analysis is the branch of mathematics that deals with the analysis of dynamical systems affected by noise. It emerged as a core area of mathematics in the late 20th century and has subsequently developed into an important theory with a wide range of powerful and novel tools, and with impressive applications within and beyond mathematics. Many systems are profoundly affected by stochastic fluctuations and it is not surprising that the array of applications of Stochastic Analysis is vast and touches on many aspects of life. The present volume is intended for researchers and Ph.D. students in stochastic analysis and its applications, stochastic optimization and financial mathematics, as well as financial engineers and quantitative analysts.

Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic theory of Taylor expansions of evolutionary-type stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). The authors show how Taylor expansions can be used to derive higher order numerical methods for SPDEs, with a focus on pathwise and strong convergence. In the case of multiplicative noise, the driving noise process is assumed to be a cylindrical Wiener process, while in the case of additive noise the SPDE is assumed to be driven by an arbitrary stochastic process with H?lder continuous sample paths. Recent developments on numerical methods for random and stochastic ordinary differential equations are also included since these are relevant for solving spatially discretised SPDEs as well as of interest in their own right. The authors include the proof of an existence and uniqueness theorem under general assumptions on the coefficients as well as regularity estimates in an appendix.

This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many important physical variables satisfy certain dynamic evolution systems and can take only non-negative values. Therefore, one can study such variables by studying these dynamic systems. One can put some conditions on the coefficients to ensure non-negative values in deterministic cases. However, as a random process disturbs the system, the components of solutions to stochastic differential equations (SDE) can keep changing between arbitrary large positive and negative values-even in the simplest case. To overcome this difficulty, the author examines the reflecting stochastic differential equation (RSDE) with the coordinate planes as its boundary-or with a more general boundary. Reflecting Stochastic Differential Equations with Jumps and Applications systematically studies the general theory and applications of these equations. In particular, the author examines the existence, uniqueness, comparison, convergence, and stability of strong solutions to cases where the RSDE has discontinuous coefficients-with greater than linear growth-that may include jump reflection. He derives the nonlinear filtering and Zakai equations, the Maximum Principle for stochastic optimal control, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of optimal control. Most of the material presented in this book is new, including much new work by the author concerning SDEs both with and without reflection. Much of it appears here for the first time. With the application of RSDEs to various real-life problems, such as the stochastic population and neurophysiological control problems-both addressed in the text-scientists dealing with stochastic dynamic systems will find this an interesting and useful work.

Book excerpt: This research monograph brings together, for the first time, the varied literature on Yosida approximations of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in infinite dimensions and their applications into a single cohesive work. The author provides a clear and systematic introduction to the Yosida approximation method and justifies its power by presenting its applications in some practical topics such as stochastic stability and stochastic optimal control. The theory assimilated spans more than 35 years of mathematics, but is developed slowly and methodically in digestible pieces. The book begins with a motivational chapter that introduces the reader to several different models that play recurring roles throughout the book as the theory is unfolded, and invites readers from different disciplines to see immediately that the effort required to work through the theory that follows is worthwhile. From there, the author presents the necessary prerequisite material, and then launches the reader into the main discussion of the monograph, namely, Yosida approximations of SDEs, Yosida approximations of SDEs with Poisson jumps, and their applications. Most of the results considered in the main chapters appear for the first time in a book form, and contain illustrative examples on stochastic partial differential equations. The key steps are included in all proofs, especially the various estimates, which help the reader to get a true feel for the theory of Yosida approximations and their use. This work is intended for researchers and graduate students in mathematics specializing in probability theory and will appeal to numerical analysts, engineers, physicists and practitioners in finance who want to apply the theory of stochastic evolution equations. Since the approach is based mainly in semigroup theory, it is amenable to a wide audience including non-specialists in stochastic processes.

The first paper in the volume, Stochastic Evolution Equations by N V Krylov and B L Rozovskii, was originally published in Russian in 1979. After more than a quarter-century, this paper remains a standard reference in the field of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) and continues to attract the attention of mathematicians of all generations. Together with a short but thorough introduction to SPDEs, it presents a number of optimal, and essentially unimprovable, results about solvability for a large class of both linear and non-linear equations. The other papers in this volume were specially written for the occasion of Prof RozovskiiOCOs 60th birthday. They tackle a wide range of topics in the theory and applications of stochastic differential equations, both ordinary and with partial derivatives."

Book excerpt: The stochastic Maxwell equations play an essential role in many fields, including fluctuational electrodynamics, statistical radiophysics, integrated circuits, and stochastic inverse problems. This book provides some recent advances in the investigation of numerical approximations of the stochastic Maxwell equations via structure-preserving algorithms. It presents an accessible overview of the construction and analysis of structure-preserving algorithms with an emphasis on the preservation of geometric structures, physical properties, and asymptotic behaviors of the stochastic Maxwell equations. A friendly introduction to the simulation of the stochastic Maxwell equations with some structure-preserving algorithms is provided using MATLAB for the reader’s convenience. The objects considered in this book are related to several fascinating mathematical fields: numerical analysis, stochastic analysis, (multi-)symplectic geometry, large deviations principle, ergodic theory, partial differential equation, probability theory, etc. This book will appeal to researchers who are interested in these topics.
