Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faster Algorithms via Approximation Theory illustrates how classical and modern techniques from approximation theory play a crucial role in obtaining results that are relevant to the emerging theory of fast algorithms. The key lies in the fact that such results imply faster ways to approximate primitives such as products of matrix functions with vectors and, to compute matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which are fundamental to many spectral algorithms. The first half of the book is devoted to the ideas and results from approximation theory that are central, elegant, and may have wider applicability in theoretical computer science. These include not only techniques relating to polynomial approximations but also those relating to approximations by rational functions and beyond. The remaining half illustrates a variety of ways that these results can be used to design fast algorithms. Faster Algorithms via Approximation Theory is self-contained and should be of interest to researchers and students in theoretical computer science, numerical linear algebra, and related areas.

Book excerpt: One of the main applications of statistical smoothing techniques is nonparametric regression. For the last 15 years there has been a strong theoretical interest in the development of such techniques. Related algorithmic concepts have been a main concern in computational statistics. Smoothing techniques in regression as well as other statistical methods are increasingly applied in biosciences and economics. But they are also relevant for medical and psychological research. Introduced are new developments in scatterplot smoothing and applications in statistical modelling. The treatment of the topics is on an intermediate level avoiding too much technicalities. Computational and applied aspects are considered throughout. Of particular interest to readers is the discussion of recent local fitting techniques.

Book excerpt: The numerical treatment of partial differential equations with particle methods and meshfree discretization techniques is an extremely active research field, both in the mathematics and engineering communities. Meshfree methods are becoming increasingly mainstream in various applications. Due to their independence of a mesh, particle schemes and meshfree methods can deal with large geometric changes of the domain more easily than classical discretization techniques. Furthermore, meshfree methods offer a promising approach for the coupling of particle models to continuous models. This volume of LNCSE is a collection of the papers from the proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Meshfree Methods, held in Bonn in August 2009. The articles address the different meshfree methods and their use in applied mathematics, physics and engineering. The volume is intended to foster this highly active and exciting area of interdisciplinary research and to present recent advances and findings in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings collect the papers accepted for presentation at the bien nial IMA Conference on the Mathematics of Surfaces, held in the University of Cambridge, 4-7 September 2000. While there are many international con ferences in this fruitful borderland of mathematics, computer graphics and engineering, this is the oldest, the most frequent and the only one to concen trate on surfaces. Contributors to this volume come from twelve different countries in Eu rope, North America and Asia. Their contributions reflect the wide diversity of present-day applications which include modelling parts of the human body for medical purposes as well as the production of cars, aircraft and engineer ing components. Some applications involve design or construction of surfaces by interpolating or approximating data given at points or on curves. Others consider the problem of 'reverse engineering'-giving a mathematical descrip tion of an already constructed object. We are particularly grateful to Pamela Bye (at the Institue of Mathemat ics and its Applications) for help in making arrangements; Stephanie Harding and Karen Barker (at Springer Verlag, London) for publishing this volume and to Kwan-Yee Kenneth Wong (Cambridge) for his heroic help with com piling the proceedings and for dealing with numerous technicalities arising from large and numerous computer files. Following this Preface is a listing of the programme committee who with the help of their colleagues did much work in refereeing the papers for these proceedings.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced study Institute (ASI) on "Computational Aspects of Complex Analysis" was held at Braunlage/Harz (Germany) from July 26 to August 6, 1982. These proceedings contain the invited lectures presented at this institute, the aim of which was to bring together scientists from pure and applied mathematics as well as computer scientists. The main topics were problems dealing with approximation and interpolation by polynomial and rational functions (in particular Pade approximation), numerical methods for the solution of algebraic equations and differential equations, the large field of conformal mapping, aspects of computer imple mentation of complex arithmetic and calculations based on complex variable techniques. The sessions on short communications not only provided a platform for the presentation of contributions by the participants of the ASI but also the opportunity to discuss the material more thoroughly, to bring up open problems and to point out the inter relationship of the above mentioned topics. Quite naturally the short communications grouped around the topics of the main lectures. The stimulating atmosphere caused many discussions to continue privately for hours. Even out of the social program there emanated two short communications by L. Wuytack and L. Trefethen, which are included at the end of these proceedings. We gratefully appreciate the support of the International Advisory Committee that was formed by L. Collatz, Germany, C. Brezinski, France, G. Golub, U.S.A., P. Henrici, Switzerland, J. van Hulzen, the Netherlands, O. Skovgaard, Denmark, I. Sneddon, United Kingdom, and J. Todd, U.S.A.

Book excerpt: The theory of approximation by polynomials and rational functions is of considerable practical significance, due in great part to the efficiency of polynomials and rational functions in representing functions on a high-speed digital computer. Some of the more useful theoretical results are presented along with their interrelations and some of the practical consequences are pointed out. Topics include problems of existence, uniqueness, characterization, and error estimation of best approximations, and algorithms for interpolation and for obtaining best leastsquares and Chebyshev approximations. Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Boundary Elements held at the University of Stuttgart, Germany from August 31st to September 4th, 1987, which was organized in co-operation with the Computational Mechanics Institute and GAMM (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics). This Conference, as the previous ones, aimed to review the latest developments in technique and theory and point out new advanced future trends. The emphasis of the meeting was on the engineering advances versus mathematical formulations, in an effort to consolidate the basis of many new applications. Recently engineers have proposed different techniques to solve non-linear and time dependent problems and many of these formulations needed a better mathematical understanding. Furthermore, new approximate formulations have been proposed for boundary elements which appeared to work in engineering practice, but did not have a proper theoretical background. The Conference also discussed the engineering applications of the method and concentrated on a link between BEM practitioners, industrial users and researchers working on the latest development of the method. The editors would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Ms. Liz Newman and Mr. H. Schmitz for their unstinting work in the preparation of the Conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study in Part I of this monograph the computational aspect of almost all moduli of continuity over wide classes of functions exploiting some of their convexity properties. To our knowledge it is the first time the entire calculus of moduli of smoothness has been included in a book. We then present numerous applications of Approximation Theory, giving exact val ues of errors in explicit forms. The K-functional method is systematically avoided since it produces nonexplicit constants. All other related books so far have allocated very little space to the computational aspect of moduli of smoothness. In Part II, we study/examine the Global Smoothness Preservation Prop erty (GSPP) for almost all known linear approximation operators of ap proximation theory including: trigonometric operators and algebraic in terpolation operators of Lagrange, Hermite-Fejer and Shepard type, also operators of stochastic type, convolution type, wavelet type integral opera tors and singular integral operators, etc. We present also a sufficient general theory for GSPP to hold true. We provide a great variety of applications of GSPP to Approximation Theory and many other fields of mathemat ics such as Functional analysis, and outside of mathematics, fields such as computer-aided geometric design (CAGD). Most of the time GSPP meth ods are optimal. Various moduli of smoothness are intensively involved in Part II. Therefore, methods from Part I can be used to calculate exactly the error of global smoothness preservation. It is the first time in the literature that a book has studied GSPP.
