Book excerpt: An empirical investigation is reported concerning approximate solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem in a finite region R by linear combinations of harmonic polynomials selected from either complete or incomplete sets. The negative results of an earlier similar investigation of torsion problems by Poritsky and Danforth are traced to the collocation method they employed. An alternative method involving least squares fitting at boundary points in excess of the number required for collocation is found to yield more reliable results. An algorithm is given for the formal generation of complete sets of harmonic polynomials (of given maximum degree) from corresponding incomplete sets. The fitting capabilities of the latter are found to be at least comparable with those of complete sets, but to require trial-and-error adjustment of parameters of displacement, orientation, and scale of R. Extensions to more general partial differential equations and to higher dimensions are indicated. The present results encourage optimism regarding the usefulness of harmonic polynomials for approximation in a wide range of applications. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an easily accessible account of the approximation of functions. It is simple and without unnecessary details, but complete enough to include the classical results of the theory. With only a few exceptions, only functions of one real variable are considered. A major theme is the degree of uniform approximation by linear sets of functions. This encompasses approximations by trigonometric polynomials, algebraic polynomials, rational functions, and polynomial operators. The chapter on approximation by operators does not assume extensive knowledge of functional analysis. Two chapters cover the important topics of widths and entropy. The last chapter covers the solution by Kolmogorov and Arnol?d of Hilbert's 13th problem. There are notes at the end of each chapter that give information about important topics not treated in the main text. Each chapter also has a short set of challenging problems, which serve as illustrations.

Book excerpt: This book introduces general theory by presenting the most important facts on multivariate interpolation, quadrature, orthogonal projections and their summation, all treated under a constructive view, and embedded in the theory of positive linear operators. On this background, the book builds the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of generalized hyperinterpolation. Several parts of the book are based on rotation principles, which are presented in the beginning of the book.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the analysis of approximate solution techniques for differential equations, based on classical orthogonal polynomials. These techniques are popularly known as spectral methods. In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in this subject. As a matter offact, spectral methods provide a competitive alternative to other standard approximation techniques, for a large variety of problems. Initial ap plications were concerned with the investigation of periodic solutions of boundary value problems using trigonometric polynomials. Subsequently, the analysis was extended to algebraic polynomials. Expansions in orthogonal basis functions were preferred, due to their high accuracy and flexibility in computations. The aim of this book is to present a preliminary mathematical background for be ginners who wish to study and perform numerical experiments, or who wish to improve their skill in order to tackle more specific applications. In addition, it furnishes a com prehensive collection of basic formulas and theorems that are useful for implementations at any level of complexity. We tried to maintain an elementary exposition so that no experience in functional analysis is required.

Book excerpt: Hermann Weyl considered value distribution theory to be the greatest mathematical achievement of the first half of the 20th century. The present lectures show that this beautiful theory is still growing. An important tool is complex approximation and some of the lectures are devoted to this topic. Harmonic approximation started to flourish astonishingly rapidly towards the end of the 20th century, and the latest development, including approximation manifolds, are presented here. Since de Branges confirmed the Bieberbach conjecture, the primary problem in geometric function theory is to find the precise value of the Bloch constant. After more than half a century without progress, a breakthrough was recently achieved and is presented. Other topics are also presented, including Jensen measures. A valuable introduction to currently active areas of complex analysis and potential theory. Can be read with profit by both students of analysis and research mathematicians.

Book excerpt: In this book, we have attempted to explain a variety of different techniques and ideas which have contributed to this subject in its course of successive refinements during the last 25 years. There are other books and surveys reviewing the ideas from the perspective of either potential theory or orthogonal polynomials. The main thrust of this book is to introduce the subject from an approximation theory point of view. Thus, the main motivation is to study analogues of results from classical trigonometric approximation theory, introducing other ideas as needed. It is not our objective to survey the most recent results, but merely to introduce to the readers the thought processes and ideas as they are developed. This book is intended to be self-contained, although the reader is expected to be familiar with rudimentary real and complex analysis. It will also help to have studied elementary trigonometric approximation theory, and have some exposure to orthogonal polynomials.

Book excerpt: This volume consists of the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Approximation by Solutions of Partial Differential Equations, Quadrature Formulae, and Related Topics, which was held at Hanstholm, Denmark. These proceedings include the main invited talks and contributed papers given during the workshop. The aim of these lectures was to present a selection of results of the latest research in the field. In addition to covering topics in approximation by solutions of partial differential equations and quadrature formulae, this volume is also concerned with related areas, such as Gaussian quadratures, the Pompelu problem, rational approximation to the Fresnel integral, boundary correspondence of univalent harmonic mappings, the application of the Hilbert transform in two dimensional aerodynamics, finely open sets in the limit set of a finitely generated Kleinian group, scattering theory, harmonic and maximal measures for rational functions and the solution of the classical Dirichlet problem. In addition, this volume includes some problems in potential theory which were presented in the Problem Session at Hanstholm.
