This book was released on 1949 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method which has previously been presented for the estimation of the low-speed stability derivatives of swept wings is modified to yield approximate corrections for the first-order three-dimensional effects of compressible flow in the subsonic region. Corrections are presented in chart for for several aspect ratios and angles of sweep. Lift-curve slopes and values of damping roll are compared with those obtained by use of a generally accepted method and are discussed in relation to unpublished data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters deals with aircraft flying qualities that determine the stability and control of airplanes and helicopters. It includes problems based on real aircraft, selected to represent the gamut from simple to complicated, and from conventional utility designs to futuristic research types. Many of these problems involve comparison of theory and experiment to demonstrate their mutual relationship. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the aerodynamics of the component parts related to the lift and moment characteristics of an airplane, including wings and associated accessories; bodies such as fuselages, nacelles, and tip tanks; and control surfaces. The reader is then introduced to some mathematical techniques for linear differential equations; steady flight at different speeds; and stick force and control-free stability. Subsequent chapters focus on flaps and high-lift devices; power and compressibility effects; and the manner in which the aircraft responds to the application of control. Aeroelasticity and longitudinal equations of motion are also examined. This monograph is intended for undergraduate and graduate students taking modern engineering courses.

This book was released on 1957 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of vertical-tail location and size on the subsonic aerodynamic characteristics of a model having a triangular wing. The wing had an aspect ratio of 3, an NACA 0003.5-63 section in the streamwise direction, and plain, trailing-edge ailerons. The wing was attached to the fuselage in either a mid or high position and an unswept horizontal tail was located on the fuselage center line. Two vertical tails were tested which had areas of 26.7 or 20.3 percent of the wing area. Each vertical tail was equipped with a rudder and had a geometric aspect ratio of 1.5, a taper ratio of 0.16, and 54 degrees of sweepback of the leading edge. Each vertical tail was tested at two different tail lengths. The wind-tunnel tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 2.5 milMon at Mach numbers from 0.25 to 0.95.

Book excerpt: A series of vitreous coatings of the same basic composition, but with cobalt-oxide contents varying from O to 6.4 percent by weight, fired on ingot iron in atmospheres consisting of various oxygen-nitrogen mixtures. The effect of the oxygen content of the atmosphere on adherence was determined by subjecting each specimen to the American Society for Testing Materials adherence test, and the effect of interface roughness was estimated from examination of metallographic sections.
