Book excerpt: Risk science is becoming increasingly important as businesses, policymakers and public sector leaders are tasked with decision-making and investment using varying levels of knowledge and information. Risk Science: An Introduction explores the theory and practice of risk science, providing concepts and tools for understanding and acting under conditions of uncertainty. The chapters in this work cover the fundamental concepts, principles, approaches, methods and models for how to understand, assess, communicate, manage and govern risk. These topics are presented and examined in a way which details how they relate, for example, how to characterize and communicate risk with particular emphasis on reflecting uncertainties; how to distinguish risk perception and professional risk judgments; how to assess risk and guide decision-makers, especially for cases involving large uncertainties and value differences; and how to integrate risk assessment with resilience-based strategies. The text provides a variety of examples and case studies that relate to highly visible and relevant issues facing risk academics, practitioners and non-risk leaders who must make risk-related decisions. Presenting both the foundational and most recent advancements in the subject matter, this work particularly suits students of risk science courses at college and university level. The book also provides broader key reading for students and scholars in other domains, including business, engineering and public health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the various aspects of sustainable agricultures to undergraduate and graduate students. The book first quantifies the components of the crop energy balance, i.e. the partitioning of net radiation, and their effect on the thermal environment of the canopy. The soil water balance and the quantification of its main component (evapotranspiration) are studied to determine the availability of water to rain fed crops and to calculate crop water requirements. Then it sets the limitations of crop production in relation to crop phenology, radiation interception and resource availability (e.g. nutrients). With that in mind the different agricultural techniques (sowing, tillage, irrigation, fertilization, harvest, application of pesticides, etc.) are analyzed with special emphasis in quantifying the inputs (sowing rates, fertilizer amounts, irrigation schedules, tillage plans) required for a given target yield under specific environmental conditions (soil & climate). For all techniques strategies are provided for improving the ratio productivity/resource use while ensuring sustainability. The book comes with online practical focusing on the key aspects of management in a crop rotation (collecting weather data, calculating productivity, sowing rates, irrigation programs, fertilizers rates etc).

Book excerpt: Explore the major theories within crisis communication, fully revised and updated Theorizing Crisis Communication provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art review of both current and emerging theoretical frameworks designed to explain the development, management, and consequences of natural and human-caused crises. A critique of the many theoretical approaches of crisis communication, this volume provides readers with an in-depth understanding of the management, response, resolution, and significance of failures in corporate responsibility, as well as destructive global events such as pandemics, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, chemical spills, and terrorist attacks. This second edition contains new theories from related subfields and updated examples, references, and case examples. New chapters discuss metatheoretical considerations and theoretical advancements in the study of social media. Throughout the text, the authors highlight similarities, patterns, and relationships across different crisis types and offer insight into the application of theory in the real world. Integrating work from organizational studies, social sciences, public relations, and public health, this book: Covers a broad range of crisis communication theories, including those relevant to emergency response, risk management, ethics, resilience and crisis warning, development, and outcomes Presents theoretical frameworks based on research disciplines including sociology, psychology, applied anthropology, and criminal justice Provides clear and compelling examples of application of theory in contexts such as rhetoric, mass communication, social media, and warning systems Offers a systematic and accessible presentation of topics by explaining each theory, describing its applications, and discussing its advantages and drawbacks Theorizing Crisis Communication, Second Edition, is the perfect textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of crisis and risk communication, and an importance reference for scholars, researchers, and practitioners in fields including crisis communication, emergency management, disaster studies, sociology, psychology, and anthropology.

Agus D.W. Martowardojo Governor of Bank Indonesia “No doubt, Islam is a system and way of life which is intact and unified. It is not just a torch to truth and salvation, but also a complete guide to all aspects of life in this world, including in the financial sector. Publication of the book entitled The Dynamics of Islamic Financial Products and Contracts in Indonesia is one such proof. Islam emphasizes the ‘dualism of piousness’; pious in terms of spirituality and financial matters, and clearly the book is one of the ‘white paper’ that everyone should read” KH. Ma’ruf Amin The Chief of Indonesian Ulama Council

Book excerpt: This volume represents the diverse scholarship taking place among a multidisciplinary graduate student network, the Circumpolar Students' Association, at the University of Albert. Academic peer-reviewed papers and extended abstracts comprise both theoretical and empirical papers on thesis and non-thesis related subjects from several disciplines. The resulting collection is varied, and touch on a wide range of themes: ethical research practices in indigenous communities, land use conflicts and development, cultural tourism and empowerment, climate change impacts on northern ecology and biodiversity, experiences in community-based research, health and environmental risk perception, socio-economic impacts of industrial development, wind energy potential in Yukon, contemporary language programs in Nunavut, the impact of industry on post-secondary education in the NWT, the integrity of reserve networks in addressing conservation issues, and a study on religious discourse of Cree Evangelical Christians in northern Alberta. The authors have diverse backgrounds, academic training, and perspectives; however, their common interest in northern issues regularly brings them together to exchange ideas concerning the changing north.
