This book was released on 2006 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the policy implementation process, and to the development of tools that link theory with policy implementation practice. To this end, the study raised the hypothesis that a policy implementation problem arises because of a lack of fit between the context in which the policy takes place and the policy. The thesis further proposed that this gap and the policy instruments to mitigate the gap could be determined through the use of a contingency model developed and tested in this study. This contingency model contends that policy implementation (in this case online learning policy) is affected by the degree of fit between two variables: the organizational structure and the policy. The closer the fit between the two variables the less likely that implementation problems will arise. To test the hypothesis, the proposed contingency model was applied in the implementation of online learning policy in a case study involving five higher education institutions in the province of British Columbia, Canada. The findings from the case study supported the hypothesis and validated this contingency model by demonstrating a relationship between the organizational structure and the policy, and a relationship between policy implementation problems, and the gap between the context and the policy. The findings from this study contribute to the body of policy implementation research that is exploring the link between policy and context, and between policy and practice. It contributes to policy implementation theory, through showing a correlation between the organizational structure and the policy, and policy implementation problems; and by providing a practical tool that decision makers can use to link policy implementation theory and practice. The study also contributes to the distance education literature by providing detailed insights into the online learning implementation process in the university-college sector. It demonstrates that online learning policy implementation is dependent on the institutional contexts, thereby supporting the hypothesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Neither an academic tome nor a prescriptive 'how to' guide, The Theory and Practice of Online Learning is an illuminating collection of essays by practitioners and scholars active in the complex field of distance education. Distance education has evolved significantly in its 150 years of existence. For most of this time, it was an individual pursuit defined by infrequent postal communication. But recently, three more developmental generations have emerged, supported by television and radio, teleconferencing, and computer conferencing. The early 21st century has produced a fifth generation, based on autonomous agents and intelligent, database-assisted learning, that has been referred to as Web 2.0. The second edition of "The Theory and Practice of Online Learning" features updates in each chapter, plus four new chapters on current distance education issues such as connectivism and social software innovations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning by : Insung Jung
Download or read book Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning written by Insung Jung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality assurance (QA) in open and distance learning (ODL) can be a contentious issue. Some argue that it should be judged by the same criteria and methods as face-to-face education, while others claim that it is so different in its organization, enrolments and operations that conventional QA mechanisms cannot apply. Some advocate the use of specific guidelines and standards for e-learning; others believe that, regardless of the technology, the basic principles of quality teaching and learning should apply. Providers who have enjoyed freedom from external scrutiny may resist attempts at external regulation and auditing and look upon QA as yet another imposition of corporatization and bureaucracy on education. Others see it as a means of establishing a culture of quality, self-reflection and self-improvement. There is little research-based literature to guide policy-makers, managers and practitioners in applying QA in education and training to ensure the right balance is found between accountability and autonomy, as well as assuring quality for the time and costs involved. In this respect, Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning is a book that is long overdue. It explains what is involved in QA and accreditation in education. It describes and analyzes applications of these practices in open, distance, dual-mode and conventional universities throughout Europe, North America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific, looking at open schooling, e-learning in conventional schools, non-formal adult and community education, and corporate and small-to-medium enterprises. Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning is edited and authored by experts with extensive international experience in ODL, e-learning and QA who give careful consideration to the possibilities and challenges involved. The book will be an invaluable guide for all policy-makers, managers, practitioners and researchers in the field.
Book Synopsis Educational Evaluation, Assessment and Monitoring by : Cees Glas
Download or read book Educational Evaluation, Assessment and Monitoring written by Cees Glas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the foundations of school self-evaluation from a scientific as from a practical perspective. Planning concepts, restructuring of education systems, organizational theory on schools, evaluation methodology and models of school effectiveness and school improvement are discussed as contributing to the overall conceptualization of school self-evaluation. A broad range of approaches is presented and methodological requirements are discussed. School self-evaluation contains controversial issues that reflect tension between the need for objectivity in a context that is permeated by values and potential conflicts of interests. Similar tensions may be seen to exist with respect to the static and "reductionist" aspects of available data collection procedures in a complex and dynamic situation and the appeal for external accountability on the one hand and improvement oriented self-refection on the other. The mission of the book is to clarify these tensions and offer ways to deal with them in practical applications. The school effectiveness knowledge base is offered as a substantive educational frame of references that serves an important function in selecting relevant factors for data collection and the use of the evaluation results.
