Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Solid State Science: Advances in Materials and Device Research, Volume 1 presents articles about junction electroluminescence; metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) physics; ion implantation in semiconductors; and electron transport through insulating thin films. The book describes the basic physics of carrier injection; energy transfer and recombination mechanisms; state of the art efficiencies; and future prospects for light emitting diodes. The text then discusses solid state spectroscopy, which is the pair spectra observed in gallium phosphide photoluminescence. The extensive studies of MIS diodes that have led to detailed understanding of the silicon-silicon dioxide interface, as well as the devices that can be fabricated by ion implantation in semiconductors are also considered. The book further tackles fundamental mechanisms of electron transport through insulating thin films; mechanisms that influence the design of many thin film; and semiconductor devices. Solid state physicists, materials scientists, electrical engineers, and graduate students working near the subjects being discussed will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to give a self-contained and representative cross section through present-day research in solid-state physics. This covers metallic and mesoscopic transport, localization by disorder and superconductivity, including questions related to high-temperature superconductors and to heavy fermion systems. An important part of the book is devoted to itinerant-electron magnetism, discussing paramagnons, strong correlation, magnetization fluctuations and spin density waves. All the formal tools used in these chapters are developed in the first part of the book which contains a thorough discussion of second quantization and of perturbation theory for an arbitrary complex time path and also describes the functional approach to Feynman diagrams including general ward identities. Each chapter contains an extensive list of the relevant literature and a series of problems with detailed solutions which complement the main text. The book is meant both as a course and a research tool.

Book excerpt: In addition to the topics discussed in the First Edition, this Second Edition contains introductory treatments of superconducting materials and of ferromagnetism. I think the book is now more balanced because it is divided perhaps 60% - 40% between devices (of all kinds) and materials (of all kinds). For the physicist interested in solid state applications, I suggest that this ratio is reasonable. I have also rewritten a number of sections in the interest of (hopefully) increased clarity. The aims remain those stated in the Preface to the First Edition; the book is a survey of the physics of a number of solid state devices and ma terials. Since my object is a discussion of the basic ideas in a number of fields, I have not tried to present the "state of the art," especially in semi conductor devices. Applied solid state physics is too vast and rapidly changing to cover completely, and there are many references available to recent developments. For these reasons, I have not treated a number of interesting areas. Among the lacunae are superiattices, heterostructures, compound semiconductor devices, ballistic transistors, integrated optics, and light wave communications. (Suggested references to those subjects are given in an appendix. ) I have tried to cover some of the recent revolutionary developments in superconducting materials.

It is written for a mixed audience of electricalengineering and applied physics students who have some knowledge of elementaryundergraduate quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. This book, based on asuccessful course taught at MIT, is divided pedagogically into three parts: (I) ElectronicStructure, (II) Transport Properties, and (III) Optical Properties. Each topic is explainedin the context of bulk materials and then extended to low-dimensional materials whereapplicable. Problem sets review the content of each chapter to help students to understandthe material described in each of the chapters more deeply and to prepare them to masterthe next chapters.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is a discussion, at the introductory level, of some applications of solid state physics. The book evolved from notes written for a course offered three times in the Department of Physics of the University of California at Berkeley. The objects of the course were (a) to broaden the knowledge of graduate students in physics, especially those in solid state physics; (b) to provide a useful course covering the physics of a variety of solid state devices for students in several areas of physics; (c) to indicate some areas of research in applied solid state physics. To achieve these ends, this book is designed to be a survey of the physics of a number of solid state devices. As the italics indicate, the key words in this description are physics and survey. Physics is a key word because the book stresses the basic qualitative physics of the applications, in enough depth to explain the essentials of how a device works but not deeply enough to allow the reader to design one. The question emphasized is how the solid state physics of the application results in the basic useful property of the device. An example is how the physics of the tunnel diode results in a negative dynamic resistance. Specific circuit applications of devices are mentioned, but not emphasized, since expositions are available in the elec trical engineering textbooks given as references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid-state NMR is a powerful physical method widely applied in modern fundamental and applied science, medicine, and industry. Its role is particularly valuable in materials chemistry due to the capability of solid-state NMR to rapidly solve tasks connected with structural descriptions of complex systems on macro and/or molecular levels, and the identification of the dynamics often responsible for complex systems mechanical properties. Written for non-specialists, Solid-State NMR in Materials Science: Principles and Applications introduces the general physical principles of pulsed NMR, by including elements of the theory and practice in the registration of NMR signals, and by explaining different NMR equipment. After the preliminaries, the book covers: The theory and features of solid-state NMR and nuclear relaxation in solids, including dynamics of materials Different materials, diamagnetic and paramagnetic, from metals and metal clusters to amorphous composites The methodology of collection and interpretations of solid-state NMR data, including strategies and criteria for structural characterizations of different materials Practical examples of multinuclear NMR and relaxation experiments as well as interpretations of data obtained Numerous solid-state NMR experiments performed for various materials to evaluate their structure and dynamics Written in clear and simple language, this book includes clear illustrations, numerous examples, and detailed bibliographies. It an excellent reference not only for young and experienced researchers, but also for students interested in a future in materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of a set of lectures sponsored by the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminars. It deals with different aspects of applied physics which are an outgrowth of fundamental research. The courses were given by experts engaged in their respective fields. These review articles are intended to fill a gap between the many research papers that are appearing today in pure science on one hand, and in applied science on the other hand. It is a bridge between these two. It aims at the specialist in applied physics, chemistry and engineering, working in these specialized fields, as well as at the graduate student, interested in solid solid state physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. While this book contains a range of different topics, there is an under lying logic in the choice of the subject material. The first three articles, by Drs. Giordmaine, Friesem and Porto, deal with modern applied optics, which arise to a large extent from the availability of coherent and powerful laser sources. Two articles deal with materials, in particular that of Dr. Chalmers on the theory and principle of solidification and that of Dr. Laudise on the techniques of crystal growth. The last three articles, by Drs. Matthias, Doyle and Prince, are concerned with the use of materials in fields of superconductivity, computer storage and semi conductor photovoltaic effects. Dr. Rose gives a definitive review on human and electronic vision, an out-growth of life-long activity in this field.
