Book excerpt: This book on Applied Operations Research and Financial Modelling in Energy (AORFME) presents several applications of operations research (OR) and financial modelling. The contributions by a group of OR and Finance researchers focus on a variety of energy decisions, presenting a quantitative perspective, and providing policy implications of the proposed or applied methodologies. The content is divided into three main parts: Applied OR I: Optimization Approaches, Applied OR II: Forecasting Approaches and Financial Modelling: Impacts of Energy Policies and Developments in Energy Markets. The book appeals to scholars in economics, finance and operations research, and to practitioners working in the energy sector. This is the eighth volume in a series of books on energy organized by the Centre for Energy and Value Issues (CEVI). For this volume, CEVI collaborated with Hacettepe University’s Energy Markets Research and Application Center. The previous volumes in the series are: Financial Aspects in Energy (2011), Energy Economics and Financial Markets (2012), Perspectives on Energy Risk (2014), Energy Technology and Valuation Issues (2015), Energy and Finance (2016), Energy Economy, Finance and Geostrategy (2018), and Financial Implications of Regulations in the Energy Industry (2020).

The eighteen contributions presented in this Work have been written by eminent scientists; a few papers are based on talks which took place at the International Conference at the Hellenic Artillery School in May 2015. Each paper evaluates possible solutions to long-standing problems such as the solvability of the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, geometric approaches to cyber security, ellipsoid targeting with overlap, non-equilibrium solutions of dynamic networks, measuring ballistic dispersion, elliptic regularity theory for the numerical solution of variational problems, approximation theory for polynomials on the real line and the unit circle, complementarity and variational inequalities in electronics, new two-slope parameterized achievement scalarizing functions for nonlinear multiobjective optimization, and strong and weak convexity of closed sets in a Hilbert space. /divGraduate students, scientists, engineers and researchers in pure and applied mathematical sciences, operations research, engineering, and cyber security will find the interdisciplinary scientific perspectives useful to their overall understanding and further research.

Book excerpt: Operations Research: A Practical Introduction is just that: a hands-on approach to the field of operations research (OR) and a useful guide for using OR techniques in scientific decision making, design, analysis and management. The text accomplishes two goals. First, it provides readers with an introduction to standard mathematical models and algorithms. Second, it is a thorough examination of practical issues relevant to the development and use of computational methods for problem solving. Highlights: All chapters contain up-to-date topics and summaries A succinct presentation to fit a one-term course Each chapter has references, readings, and list of key terms Includes illustrative and current applications New exercises are added throughout the text Software tools have been updated with the newest and most popular software Many students of various disciplines such as mathematics, economics, industrial engineering and computer science often take one course in operations research. This book is written to provide a succinct and efficient introduction to the subject for these students, while offering a sound and fundamental preparation for more advanced courses in linear and nonlinear optimization, and many stochastic models and analyses. It provides relevant analytical tools for this varied audience and will also serve professionals, corporate managers, and technical consultants.

Tarjan Discrete Mathematics and Optimization involves the study of finite structures. It is one of the fastest growing areas in mathematics today. The level and depth of recent advances in the area and the wide applicability of its evolving techniques point to the rapidity with which the field is moving from its beginnings to maturity and presage the ever-increasing interaction between it and computer science. The Series provides a broad coverage of discrete mathematics and optimization, ranging over such fields as combinatorics, graph theory, enumeration, mathematical programming and the analysis of algorithms, and including such topics as Ramsey theory, transversal theory, block designs, finite geometries, Polya theory, graph and matroid algorithms, network flows, polyhedral combinatorics and computational complexity. The Wiley - Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization will be a substantial part of the record of this extraordinary development. Recent titles in the Series: Search Problems Rudolf Ahlswede, University of Bielefeld, Federal Republic of Germany Ingo Wegener, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany The problems of search, exploration, discovery and identification are of key importance in a wide variety of applications. This book will be of great interest to all those concerned with searching, sorting, information processing, design of experiments and optimal allocation of resources. 1987 Introduction to Optimization E. M. L. Beale FRS, Scicon Ltd, Milton Keynes, and Imperial College, London This book is intended as an introduction to the many topics covered by the term 'optimization', with special emphasis on applications in industry. It is divided into three parts. The first part covers unconstrained optimization, the second describes the methods used to solve linear programming problems, and the third covers nonlinear programming, integer programming and dynamic programming. The book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students studying optimization as part of a course in mathematics, computer science or engineering. 1988

Book excerpt: This book provides the foundations of the theory of nonlinear optimization as well as some related algorithms and presents a variety of applications from diverse areas of applied sciences. The author combines three pillars of optimization?theoretical and algorithmic foundation, familiarity with various applications, and the ability to apply the theory and algorithms on actual problems?and rigorously and gradually builds the connection between theory, algorithms, applications, and implementation. Readers will find more than 170 theoretical, algorithmic, and numerical exercises that deepen and enhance the reader's understanding of the topics. The author includes offers several subjects not typically found in optimization books?for example, optimality conditions in sparsity-constrained optimization, hidden convexity, and total least squares. The book also offers a large number of applications discussed theoretically and algorithmically, such as circle fitting, Chebyshev center, the Fermat?Weber problem, denoising, clustering, total least squares, and orthogonal regression and theoretical and algorithmic topics demonstrated by the MATLAB? toolbox CVX and a package of m-files that is posted on the book?s web site.

In simple words, its goal on the strategic and tactical levels is to aid in decision making and, on the operational level, automate decision making. Its tools are algorithms, procedures that create and improve solutions to a point at which optimal or, at least, satisfactory solutions have been found. While many texts on the subject emphasize methods, the special focus of this book is on the applications of operations research in practice. Typically, a topic is introduced by means of a description of its applications, a model is formulated and its solution is presented. Then the solution is discussed and its implications for decision making are outlined. We have attempted to maximize the understanding of the topics by using intuitive reasoning while keeping mathematical notation and the description of techniques to a minimum. The exercises are designed to fully explore the material covered in the chapters, without resorting to mind-numbing repetitions and trivialization.

Book excerpt: The generalized area of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) can be defined as the body of methods and procedures by which the concern for multiple conflicting criteria can be formally incorporated into the analytical process. MCDM consists mostly of two branches, multiple criteria optimization and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). While MCDA is typically concerned with multiple criteria problems that have a small number of alternatives often in an environment of uncertainty (location of an airport, type of drug rehabilitation program), multiple criteria optimization is typically directed at problems formulated within a mathematical programming framework, but with a stack of objectives instead of just one (river basin management, engineering component design, product distribution). It is about the most modern treatment of multiple criteria optimization that this book is concerned. I look at this book as a nicely organized and well-rounded presentation of what I view as ”new wave” topics in multiple criteria optimization. Looking back to the origins of MCDM, most people agree that it was not until about the early 1970s that multiple criteria optimization c- gealed as a field. At this time, and for about the following fifteen years, the focus was on theories of multiple objective linear programming that subsume conventional (single criterion) linear programming, algorithms for characterizing the efficient set, theoretical vector-maximum dev- opments, and interactive procedures.
