Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Neurophysiology is intended to promote understanding of the structure and function of the human nervous system for anesthetists. For that reason this book presented concepts rather than critical discussions of experimental work. This book is organized into five parts. There are chapters intended for specialists such as those on vision, control of gaze, hearing and locomotion that were included in order to introduce concepts on brain stem automatisms and cortical function necessary to understand respiration and conscious awareness. There is also a chapter on autonomic nervous system which provides an account of the regulation of the cerebral circulation. The final sections of this volume also include quantitative data and references to original studies which were not thought necessary in other sections. This book will be of interest to anesthetists, clinicians, psychologists, speech pathologists and even neurologists in training.

This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies methods from nonlinear dynamics to problems in neuroscience. It uses modern mathematical approaches to understand patterns of neuronal activity seen in experiments and models of neuronal behavior. The intended audience is researchers interested in applying mathematics to important problems in neuroscience, and neuroscientists who would like to understand how to create models, as well as the mathematical and computational methods for analyzing them. The authors take a very broad approach and use many different methods to solve and understand complex models of neurons and circuits. They explain and combine numerical, analytical, dynamical systems and perturbation methods to produce a modern approach to the types of model equations that arise in neuroscience. There are extensive chapters on the role of noise, multiple time scales and spatial interactions in generating complex activity patterns found in experiments. The early chapters require little more than basic calculus and some elementary differential equations and can form the core of a computational neuroscience course. Later chapters can be used as a basis for a graduate class and as a source for current research in mathematical neuroscience. The book contains a large number of illustrations, chapter summaries and hundreds of exercises which are motivated by issues that arise in biology, and involve both computation and analysis. Bard Ermentrout is Professor of Computational Biology and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. David Terman is Professor of Mathematics at the Ohio State University.

This new edition of Neurophysiology in Neurosurgery: A Modern Approach provides updates on the original techniques, as well as other more recent methodologies that may either prove beneficial or are commonly used in neuromonitoring. The purpose of this book is to describe the integration of neuromonitoring with surgical procedures. Each methodology is discussed in detail as well as chapters describing how those methodologies are applied to multiple surgical procedures and the evidence used to support those uses. The second edition features a surgical procedure section, which focuses on specific surgical procedures and the type of monitoring used during these procedures. The original chapters have been updated, expanded, and the structure modified to ensure the book is beneficial to both physiologists and surgeons. This book is written for neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, interventional neuroradiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and plastic surgeons. - Provides a valuable educational tool that describes the theoretical and practical aspects of intraoperative monitoring through example - Presents in-depth descriptions of the most advanced techniques in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and mapping - Features a surgical procedures section that focuses on specific surgical procedures and the type of monitoring used during these procedures

Biomedical engineering is a vast field, ranging from bioengineering to brain-computer interfaces. The book explores the system-level function and dysfunction of the nervous system from scientific and engineering perspectives. The initial sections introduce readers to the physiology of the brain, and to the biomedical tools needed for diagnostics and effective therapies for various neurodegenerative and regenerative disorders. In turn, the book summarizes the biomedical interventions that are used to understand the neural mechanisms underlying empathy disorders, and reviews recent advances in biomedical engineering for rehabilitation in connection with neurodevelopmental disorders and brain injuries. Lastly, the book discusses innovations in machine learning and artificial intelligence for computer-aided disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as applications of nanotechnology in therapeutic neurology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an edited collection of essays by fourteen multicultural women (including a few Anglo women) who are doing work that crosses the boundaries of ecological and social healing. The women are prominent academics, writers and leaders spanning Native American, Indigenous, Asian, African, Latina, Jewish and Multiracial backgrounds. The contributors express a myriad of ways that the relationship between the ecological and social have brought new understanding to their experiences and work in the world. Moreover by working with these edges of awareness, they are identifying new forms of teaching, leading, healing and positive change. Ecological and Social Healing is rooted in these ideas and speaks to an "edge awareness or consciousness." In essence this speaks to the power of integrating multiple and often conflicting views and the transformations that result. As women working across the boundaries of the ecological and social, we have powerful experiences that are creating new forms of healing. This book is rooted in academic theory as well as personal and professional experience, and highlights emerging models and insights. It will appeal to those working, teaching and learning in the fields of social justice, environmental issues, women's studies, spirituality, transformative/environmental/sustainability leadership, and interdisciplinary/intersectionality studies.

Book excerpt: Treatment of the Neurologically Impaired AdultWith the present book, acclaimed international Bobath instructor and therapist Bente Gjelsvik offers an evidence-based practice-oriented road map to the assessment and treatment of patients with lesions of the central nervous system.Consisting of 238 pages of accessible text supported by 240 illustrations (mostly photographs of patients in therapy), this work is the ideal clinical guide for physical and occupational therapists, for students and practitioners working with neurologically impaired adults, and for Bobath instructors as well as trainers in physiotherapy in general. Gjelsvik successfully bridges the gap between evidencebased clinical practice and theoretical assumptions, developing a clear understanding of the neuromusculoskeletal system, of motor control, of neural and muscle plasticity, and ultimately of the structure and function of the organism as a whole. The fine balance between theoretical information, clinical relevance, and practical examples make this an essential book for learning all about the interaction between the central nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, movement, and function. Bente Gjelsvik thus improves any Bobath therapist's competency in achieving the best possible assessment of the individual with neurological conditions, for best possible results of the treatment.
