Book excerpt: This volume captures the contents of the talks given at the Workshop on Applications of High Intensity Proton Accelerators held at Fermilab Oct 19-21, 2009. This workshop brought together experts from a variety of disciplines to explore new and profound ways proton accelerators can be used in the future. The workshop explored uses of such a proton source for producing intense muon, kaon and neutrino beams as well as using the intense protons for new forms of nuclear reactors that go by the name Accelerator Driven Sub-critical systems that promise to increase our available nuclear fuel supply by orders of magnitude while at the same time solving the nuclear waste problem. Intense proton beams can also be used to produce short-lived nuclear isotopes that are important in the medical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science and technology of proton accelerators have progressed considerably in the past three decades. Three to four orders of magnitude increase in both peak intensity and average flux have made it possible to construct high intensity proton accelerators for modern applications, such as: spallation neutron sources, kaon factory, accelerator production of tritium, energy amplifier and muon collider drivers. The accelerator design focus switched over from intensity for synchrotrons, to brightness for colliders to halos for spallation sources. An overview of this tremendous progress in both accelerator science and technology is presented, with special emphasis on the new challenges of accelerator physics issues such as: H( - ) injection, halo formation and reduction of losses.

Book excerpt: As particle accelerators strive forever increasing performance, high intensity particle beams become one of the critical demands requested across the board by a majority of accelerator users (proton, electron and ion) and for most applications. Much effort has been made by our community to pursue high intensity accelerator performance on a number of fronts. Recognizing its importance, we devote this volume to Accelerators for High Intensity Beams. High intensity accelerators have become a frontier and a network for innovation. They are responsible for many scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs that have changed our way of life, often taken for granted. A wide range of topics is covered in the fourteen articles in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced high intensity accelerators have important applications in pulsed spallation neutron sources, synchrotron radiation light sources, radioactive ion beam facilities, etc. In contrast to traditional high energy physics accelerators, these high intensity accelerators require very high beam currents with relatively low particle energy. A common practice in the design of high intensity machines is to employ large aperture and short length magnets packed densely along beam lines in limited spaces. As a result, magnetic fringe fields become more profound, and the interference among adjacent magnets often causes problems for machine operation. This has become a new challenge for the design of high-intensity accelerators. This book describes how to solve the problems of magnetic fringe fields and interference, and how to correctly compute particle optics in advanced high intensity accelerators. The book has evolved from the authors research on the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The author has developed the theory and technique of 3D-field multipole expansion, assisted by advanced 3D-magnet modeling codes and Mathematica scripts. Advanced 3D-magnet modeling produces accurate, discrete magnetic field data on selected boundaries in magnets. With these simulation data, the 3D-field multipole expansion will produce quasi-analytic field distributions within the boundaries. Furthermore, with mathematical tools, particle optics in magnets can be accurately computed with the fringe fields and interference effects taken into account automatically. The author applied the new theory and technique to the SNS quadrupoles, dipoles, other magnets, and beam transport lines. His new approach also helped to discover and to solve the design problems of the SNS ring injection and extraction during the SNS ring commissioning. These practices are described in great detail in this book, and can be followed by the design of any other accelerator project. In addition, based on the comments and feedback from students and readers, the book also includes many important command input files and Mathematica scripts, which should be very useful and can be directly employed by readers to compute particle optics in their own machines.

It is most commonly used in injection, extraction, beam manipulation, source, and focusing systems. These systems belong to the class of repetitive pulsed power. In this presentation, we review and discuss the history, present status, and future challenge of pulsed power applications in high intensity proton accelerators and storage rings.

Book excerpt: This unique new book is a comprehensive review of the many current industrial applications of particle accelerators, written by experts in each of these fields. Readers will gain a broad understanding of the principles of these applications, the extent to which they are employed, and the accelerator technology utilized. The book also serves as a thorough introduction to these fields for non-experts and laymen. Due to the increased interest in industrial applications, there is a growing interest among accelerator physicists and many other scientists worldwide in understanding how accelerators are used in various applications. The government agencies that fund scientific research with accelerators are also seeking more information on the many commercial applications that have been or can be developed with the technology developments they are funding. Many industries are also doing more research on how they can improve their products or processes using particle beams

However, each type of proton accelerator can only provide beam with certain characteristics, hence the match of accelerators and their applications need careful evaluation. In this talk, the beam parameters and performance limitations of linac, cyclotron, synchrotron, and FFAG accelerators are studied and their relative merits for application in neutron, muon, neutrino, and ADS will be assessed in terms of beam energy, intensity, bunch length, repetition rate, and beam power requirements. A possible match between the applications and the accelerator of choice is presented in a matrix form. The accelerator physics and technology issues and challenges involved will also be discussed.
