Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following document is a presentation of work undertaken while at The University of Texas at Austin in the Nuclear Engineering program. A literature review of pertaining to Compton suppression and the necessary components associated with it are presented. An overview of the work I have performed at The University of Texas at Austin is presented. The research focused on Compton suppression with emphasis on characterization of the detection system used as well as applications of Compton suppression for real world use. Characterization of the system was performed in such ways as measuring the optimal location for samples to be placed relative to the detector face, determining the ideal location of the detector within the NaI crystal to obtain the best peak to Compton ratio, understanding the relationship between detector dead time and the effectiveness of Compton suppression, and verifying the applicability of Poisson statistics to Compton suppressed detection systems. The applications of Compton suppression for real world use took the form of research carried out with irradiated samples to determine the effectiveness of using such techniques for fission product identification. Finally, an overview of the work performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory is given. The work at LANL focused on setting up electronic components used in nuclear spectroscopy experimentation as well as a complete analysis of the program SYNTH that is used for modeling spectra from radioactive isotopes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cutting-edge new edition of the classic introduction to radioactive measurement Gammy-Ray Spectrometry is a key technique in the study of radioactive decay. It measures the rate and extent of radioactivity from a variety of sources, both natural and artificial, including cosmic ray sources, nuclear reactors, high-energy physics experiments, and more. The resulting data can be essential to environmental monitoring and to a range of experimental sciences. For years, Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry has served as the classic introduction to this area for current or aspiring practitioners. A comprehensive but accessible treatment of the subject, with a thorough discussion of all major classes of detectors and their associated electronic systems, it contains everything a researcher needs to make optimal gamma-ray measurements. Now fully updated to reflect the latest technology and experimental data, it is a must-own for researchers looking to incorporate gamma-ray spectrometry into their scientific practice. Readers of the third edition of Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry will also find: Fault-finding guide for rapid and effective problem resolution Workshop-style approach emphasizing the fundamentals of laboratory practice New sections dealing with novel developments in nuclear structure research, measuring effects of pollution and climate change, new semiconductor detectors, and more Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry is ideal for PhD students and practicing gamma-ray spectroscopists, including researchers working on radiation, energy and environmental monitoring professionals, and researchers working in physics, archaeometry, and related subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated and much expanded 3e of the Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis is an authoritative reference providing the principles, practical techniques, and procedures for the accurate measurement of radioactivity from the very low levels encountered in the environment to higher levels measured in radioisotope research, clinical laboratories, biological sciences, radionuclide standardization, nuclear medicine, nuclear power, and fuel cycle facilities and in the implementation of nuclear forensic analysis and nuclear safeguards. The book describes the basic principles of radiation detection and measurement and the preparation of samples from a wide variety of matrices, assists the investigator or technician in the selection and use of appropriate radiation detectors, and presents state-of-the-art methods of analysis. Fundamentals of radiation properties, radionuclide decay, the calculations involved, and methods of detection provide the basis for a thorough understanding of the analytical procedures. The Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis, 3e, is suitable as a teaching text for university and professional training courses. The only comprehensive reference that describes the principles of detection and practical applications of every type of radioactivity detector currently used. The new 3e is broader in scope, with revised and expanded chapters, new authors, and seven new chapters on Alpha Spectrometry, Radionuclide Standardization, Radioactive Aerosol Measurements, Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, Marine Radioactivity Analysis, Nuclear Forensic Analysis and Analytical Techniques in Nuclear Safeguards Discusses in detail the principles, theory and practice applied to all types of radiation detection and measurement, making it useful for both teaching and research
