Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Operational Culture for the Warfighter: Principles and Applications" is a comprehensive planning tool and reference. It addresses the critical need of the Marine Corps to provide operationally relevant cultural teaching, training, and analysis. This book links social science paradigms to the needs of Marines using an applied anthropology approach. The text explains how fundamental features of culture (environment, economy, social structure, political structure, and belief systems) can present challenges for military operations in different cultures around the globe. Drawing on the research and field experiences of Marines themselves, "Operational Culture for the Warfighter" uses case studies from past and present cross-cultural problems to illustrate the application of cultural principles to the broad expeditionary spectrum of today's and tomorrow's Marine Corps. This new and expanded second edition of "Operational Culture for the Warfighter" extends the concepts of the original edition to the Marine Corps Planning Process. New sections on transportation and communication, law and ethics, and culture and planning will assist both military planners and operators with the practical aspects of incorporating culture into military decision-making.

Initially, cultural sensitivity training (i.e., cursory etiquette instruction) was employed in 2003, to prepare Marines for the Invasion of Baghdad during OIF I. By 2004, when the 1st Marine Division returned to Iraq for OIF II, training had evolved into culture awareness classes (i.e., introductory history, politics, religion overview). It was not until 2005 that training progressed into today's operational culture learning.

Book excerpt: As the U.S. military has learned in Iraq and Afghanistan, working effectively with local populations is essential to operational success. In the past few years, all of the services have developed cultural education and training programs to prepare their members for operating overseas. To date, however, there has been no systematic effort to record and analyze the cultural lessons learned by these service members once they return from the field. Applications in Operational Culture: Perspectives from the Field presents six essays by experienced field-grade officers on the challenges, successes, and future warfighting problems of applying culture to military operations. The chapters in this book focus on a spectrum of issues relevant to today's Marines and other service members. These include essays on the cultural and practical difficulties of training the Iraqi army; understanding tribal factors in Afghanistan; questioning the applicability of Maslow's hierarchy in Iraqi culture; and developing a cultural training program for the Australian army. Drawing on cultural concepts developed in the companion text, Operational Culture for the Warfighter, the six contributors to this book turn theory into practice, evaluating the challenges of applying cultural principles to the realities of today's field environments.

Book excerpt: As the military and intelligence communities re-tool for the 21st century, the long and contentious debate about the role of social scientists in national security environments is dividing the disciplines with renewed passion. Yet, research shows that most scholars have a weak understanding of what today's security institutions actually are and what working in them entails. This book provides an essential new foundation for the debate, with fine-grained accounts of the complex and varied work of cultural, physical, and linguistic anthropologists and archaeologists doing security-related work in governmental and military organizations, the private sector, and NGOs. In candid and provocative dialogues, leading anthropologists interrogate the dilemmas of ethics in practice and professional identity. Anthropologists in the SecurityScape is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand or influence the relationship between anthropology and security in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the interrelationship of organizational culture; macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment; and job satisfaction. Specifically, this dissertation: (1) built upon the insights and framework of prior research literature that suggest the relationship of macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment and its effect on job satisfaction (2) expanded existing empowerment models by introducing organizational culture as an influential organizational phenomenon (3) assessed the level of degree how organizational subculture groups perceive organizational culture, macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment; and job satisfaction contextual attributes. The dissertation utilized mixed method research combining both a quantitative and qualitative study with a triangulation of methods. The quantitative study employed a sample of 258 federal government employees and used hierarchical linear modeling techniques, multiple regression, hierarchical regression analysis, and independent T-test of sample means to test for main and mediator effects. The qualitative study employed a sample of 69 federal government employees and used open-ended content analysis to analyze data. Results from the quantitative study revealed that there are strong and positive relationships of organizational culture; macro empowerment, micro empowerment; and job satisfaction. Further, the quantitative study revealed that occupational subculture influences the level of perception of organizational culture; macro and micro empowerment; and job satisfaction. Results from the qualitative study provided rich and robust descriptive results complementing the quantitative study.
