This is especially true when the designer is confronted with non-conventional aircraft dynamics, tasks and/or lack of sufficient handling qualities data-base. The present paper reviews one modeling technique which was developed in the early 1970's and has been widely used since then: the optimal control model of the human pilot (OCM). The model has been validated in a number of tasks and used in the analysis as well as the synthesis of manual control loops. The capabilities of the model are evaluated in the pilot rating (PR) prediction, in the analysis and in the synthesis of pilot/vehicle control loops from the handling qualities standpoint. (SDW).

Book excerpt: This Second Edition continues the fine tradition of its predecessor by exploring the various automatic control systems in aircraft and on board missiles. Considerably expanded and updated, it now includes new or additional material on: the effectiveness of beta-beta feedback as a method of obtaining coordination during turns using the F-15 as the aircraft model; the root locus analysis of a generic acceleration autopilot used in many air-to-air and surface-to-air guided missiles; the guidance systems of the AIM-9L Sidewinder as well as bank-to-turn missiles; various types of guidance, including proportional navigation and line-of-sight and lead-angle command guidance; the coupling of the output of a director fire control system into the autopilot; the analysis of multivariable control systems; and methods for modeling the human pilot, plus the integration of the human pilot into an aircraft flight control system. Also features many new additions to the appendices.

Book excerpt: Results of a combined analytical/flight test evaluation to investigate the effects of short period zero (T theta 2) on aircraft handling qualities are presented. Two optimal pilot models were used for the analytical portion. 1/T theta 2 was varied from 0.1 to 10 for each 4 different short period configurations. Flight testing was accomplished in the variable stability NT-33A aircraft, over a range of 1/T theta 2 values at one short period configuration. A pitch tracking task was used to generate RMS pitch errors for both the analytical and flight test phase. Cooper-Harper ratings were also collected during the flight test. Analytical results showed similar trends for all short period configurations, with pilot tracking task performance degrading at low 1/T theta 2 values. The bandwidth criterion was of limited use in predicting handling qualities levels based on T theta 2 variations alone. DC gain variations produced minimal differences in pilot performance. Overall evaluation results indicate that T theta 2 placement is an important factor in short period handling qualities and should be included in future revisions to MIL-F-8785C.

Book excerpt: This book provides a readable introduction to handling qualities, the combination of pilot acceptability and piloted performance with stability and control. It adopts the analytical and qualitative standpoints needed for handling qualities analysis and design of fixed-wing aircraft. Although there are several texts on stability and control, until now none has provided insight into the piloting concerns that have affected the success of recent fly-by-wire aircraft developments.

Book excerpt: This report hypothesizes a model for pilot-airplane system dynamics which, it is claimed, will unify existing theories, explain peculiarities in available human response data, and permit the prediction of pilot opinion rating (POR) for tasks of interest to the assessment of aircraft flying qualities. The hypothesized model structure is multiple loop with essential nonlinearities. The proposed pilot model is further hypothesized to account for much that has been identified as pilot adaptation in past work. An attempt to parameterize the proposed model by a trial and error digital computer simulation produced promising but inconclusive results. However, comparison of the proposed pilot model with known forms of measured pilot dynamics for a wide range of aircraft dynamics suggested a metric for the correlation and prediction of POR that appears to be physically related to activity at a particular point within the central nervous system. This metric was evaluated for certain available data sets and was shown to be a consistent and sensitive measure of POR. It was then used to evaluate the short-period requirements of the flying qualities specification MIL-F-8785B. Several general and specific changes to the specification are recommended as a result of this study. (Author).

Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

Book excerpt: This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a codification in two parts of conventional aircraft handling qualities criteria. The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.
