As the brain of intelligent agriculture, advanced sensors determine the degree of agricultural environment and crop perception. However, an outstanding problem is the long-standing lack of effective sensing and monitoring tools in agriculture. Most information still relies on time-consuming and complex laboratory analysis and can only be off-line measured. Therefore, in-situ, on-line and sensitive methods for monitoring information about the agricultural environment and crops are urgently needed. With the development of material science, manufacturing technology and spectroscopy, more and more fast and high-precision spectroscopic methods and sensors are applied in the agricultural environment, livestock breeding and crop. Especially with the development of spectral enhancement, image processing and deep learning techniques, the study of the advanced spectroscopic methods to rapidly and precisely detect heavy metals and nutrients in the soil, harmful gas, water pollutant and crop stress will reduce the probability of subjective error judgment and improves agricultural management and production efficiency. Application of spectroscopy in an agricultural environment and livestock breeding is a research topic of Frontiers in Physics that publishes original research on the field of agricultural physics. And the aim of this research topic is to explore novel and groundbreaking spectroscopic methods to rapidly and in-situ detect information about the agricultural environment, livestock breeding and crop stress, which could be beneficial in the development of Intelligent agriculture.

It is an international text with an emphasis on Australian beef production, written by experts in the field. The book begins with an overview of the historical evolution of world beef consumption and introductory chapters on carcass and meat quality, market preparation and world beef production. North America, Brazil, China, South-East Asia and Japan are discussed in separate chapters, followed by Australian beef production, including feed lotting and live export. The remaining chapters summarise R&D, emphasising the Australian experience, and look at different production systems and aspects of animal husbandry such as health, reproduction, grazing, feeding and finishing, genetics and breeding, production efficiency, environmental management and business management. The final chapter examines various case studies in northern and southern Australia, covering feed demand and supply, supplements, pasture management, heifer and weaner management, and management of internal and external parasites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time when agricultural production activities were considered neutral to the environment has definitely passed. For last 25 years there has been growing scientific evidence on the potentially deteriorating effect of ammonia released in the process of agricultural production on the environment. In the last 15 years additional focus has been given to environmental and health impact of dust and VOC’s generated by farming activities. Only very recently is the contribution of agricultural production GHG’s to global warming recognised. In the book the various aspects of agricultural emissions are discussed. Its first part refers mainly to introductory, theoretical, and methodological issues. The second part gives the most recent data on national emissions, particularly these of Nitrogen species in selected individual European countries and the projections of their emission for all Europe. The third part which deals exclusively with ammonia brings comprehensive survey of its emission abatement potentials, the cost of appropriate actions and the difficulties in their practical implementation. It also considers the potential side effects of ammonia emission abatement measures.

Book excerpt: Naturally occurring salt tolerant and halophytic plants (trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs) have always been utilized by livestock as a supplement or drought reserve. Salt tolerant forage and fodder crops are now being planted over wide areas. Increasingly, large-scale production of fodder on formerly abandoned irrigated cropland has allowed salt t

Book excerpt: Volume 49 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry reviews the state of the art of synchrotron radiation applications in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, and offer speculations on future developments. The reader of this volume will acquire an appreciation of the theory and applications of synchrotron radiation in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, as well as the significant advances that have been made in this area in the past two decades. It gives a fairly comprehensive overview of synchrotron radiation applications in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, describes the ways that synchrotron radiation is generated, including a history of synchrotrons and a discussion of aspects of synchrotron radiation that are important to the experimentalist, describes specific synchrotron methods that are most useful for single-crystal surface and mineral-fluid interface studies as well as methods that can be used more generally for investigating complex polyphase fine-grained or amorphous materials, including soils, rocks, and organic matter.
