However one views the forecasted numbers for future population growth we will need, in the immediate future, to be feeding, clothing and housing many more people than we do, inadequately, at present. Plant breeding represents the most valuable strategy in increasing our productivity in a way that is sustainable and environmentally sensitive. Plant breeding can rightly be considered as one of the oldest multidisciplinary subjects that is known to humans. It was practised by people who first started to carry out a settled form of agriculture. The art, as it must have been at that stage, was applied without any formal underlying framework, but achieved dramatic results, as witnessed by the forms of cultivated plants we have today. We are now learning how to apply successfully the results of yet imperfect scientific knowledge. This knowledge is, however, rapidly developing, particularly in areas of tissue culture, biotechnology and molecular biology. Plant breeding's inherent multifaceted nature means that alongside obvious subject areas like genetics we also need to consider areas such as: statistics, physiology, plant pathology, entomology, biochemistry, weed science, quality, seed characteristics, repro ductive biology, trial design, selection and computing. It therefore seems apparent that modern plant breeders need to have a grasp of wide range of scientific knowledge and expertise if they are successfully to a exploit the techniques, protocols and strategies which are open to them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Application of Some of the Principles of Heredity to Plant Breeding; The Mistletoe Pest in the Southwest; New Methods of Plant Breeding The simplest of the principles discovered by Mendel is that which is usually referred to as the law of dominance. This principle should hardly be called a law, because it is in no wise general and in very few cases is dominance absolute. The phenomena of dominance and recessiveness may be illustrated by a few examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Designed to inform and inspire the next generation of plant biotechnologists Plant Biotechnology and Genetics explores contemporary techniques and applications of plant biotechnology, illustrating the tremendous potential this technology has to change our world by improving the food supply. As an introductory text, its focus is on basic science and processes. It guides students from plant biology and genetics to breeding to principles and applications of plant biotechnology. Next, the text examines the critical issues of patents and intellectual property and then tackles the many controversies and consumer concerns over transgenic plants. The final chapter of the book provides an expert forecast of the future of plant biotechnology. Each chapter has been written by one or more leading practitioners in the field and then carefully edited to ensure thoroughness and consistency. The chapters are organized so that each one progressively builds upon the previous chapters. Questions set forth in each chapter help students deepen their understanding and facilitate classroom discussions. Inspirational autobiographical essays, written by pioneers and eminent scientists in the field today, are interspersed throughout the text. Authors explain how they became involved in the field and offer a personal perspective on their contributions and the future of the field. The text's accompanying CD-ROM offers full-color figures that can be used in classroom presentations with other teaching aids available online. This text is recommended for junior- and senior-level courses in plant biotechnology or plant genetics and for courses devoted to special topics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also an ideal reference for practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The in-depth study of the genes, heredity and genetic variation in plants falls under the domain of plant genetics. Modern agriculture has undergone rapid development due to advancements in genetic modification and improved crop breeding. The breeding and selection of plants is dependent on its genetic composition. Plant breeding can be accomplished with a range of different techniques, from simply selecting plants with the right combination of desirable traits to methods employing complex molecular techniques. Genes are the determiners of qualitative and quantitative traits in plants. An understanding of the mode of reproduction is vital for enabling artificial manipulation and breeding of improved plant varieties. Certain methods of fertilization commonly employed by crop breeders are self-fertilization, asexual propagation, apomixis or self-cloning, and cross-pollination. This book contains some path-breaking studies in plant genetics. It is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of using plant genetics for advancements in agriculture. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of genes, variation and heredity in plants is under the scope of plant genetics. An important area of study in plant genetics is plant breeding. It is the practice of altering or enhancing certain traits in plants to obtain desired characteristics. Some of these include disease resistance, higher yield, drought tolerance or better adaptability to changed climatic condition. Modern plant breeding employs techniques such as marker assisted selection, reverse breeding and double haploids. Genetic modification that allows the addition or deletion of new genes to produce desirable phenotypes in plants is another method used for plant breeding. An understanding of plant genetics and plant breeding techniques can enable the development of solutions for the sustainment of agriculture in the face of harsh cropping conditions, food security concerns or loss of soil quality. This book unfolds the innovative aspects of plant breeding which will be crucial for the holistic understanding of the subject matter. It further elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to plant genetics. Coherent flow of topics, student-friendly language and extensive use of examples make this book an invaluable source of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Experiments which in previous years were made with ornamental plants have already afforded evidence that the hybrids, as a rule, are not exactly intermediate between the parental species. With some of the more striking characters, those, for instance, which relate to the form and size of the leaves, the pubescence of the several parts, etc., the intermediate, indeed, is nearly always to be seen; in other cases, however, one of the two parental characters is so preponderant that it is difficult, or quite impossible, to detect the other in the hybrid. from 4. The Forms of the Hybrid One of the most influential and important scientific works ever written, the 1865 paper Experiments in Plant Hybridisation was all but ignored in its day, and its author, Austrian priest and scientist GREGOR JOHANN MENDEL (18221884), died before seeing the dramatic long-term impact of his work, which was rediscovered at the turn of the 20th century and is now considered foundational to modern genetics. A simple, eloquent description of his 18561863 study of the inheritance of traits in pea plantsMendel analyzed 29,000 of themthis is essential reading for biology students and readers of science history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years after Charles Darwin announced his theory of evolution to the world, Gregor Mendel began studying the inheritance of traits in pea plants. Mendel's research led to his discovery of dominant and recessive traits and other facts of evolution, which he reported in his groundbreaking 1865 paper, Experiments in Plant Hybridization. His findings languished until 1902, when William Bateson revived interest in the subject with this book, a succinct account of Mendel's heredity-related discoveries. Bateson coined the term "genetics" to refer to heredity and inherited traits, and his rediscovery of Mendel's work forms the foundation of today's field of genetics. Suitable for biology and general science students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, this volume is essential reading for anyone with an interest in science and genetics. In addition to Bateson's commentary, it features two of Mendel's papers—including the original Experiments—plus a biography of Mendel, a detailed bibliography, and indexes of subjects and authors. Numerous figures complement the text, along with eight pages of color illustrations.
