Book excerpt: Evaluations were made using an infrared non-destructive testing technique employing scan laser heating of the specimen. Thermal images were obtained with a newly developed two-dimensional reflective scanner, coupled to a 50 watt CO2 laser to irradiate the specimen and a thermal imaging camera to view the specimen's irradiated surfaces. The technique showed a capability of providing a real time non-destructive test for subsurface defects in a variety of materials and structures. It allows the laser heat source and infrared camera to be remotely positioned from the specimen under test, making it possible to examine large specimens.

THERMAL IMAGES WERE OBTAINED USING A TWO-DIMENSIONAL REFLECTIVE SCANNER COUPLED TO A 30-WATT CO(SUB 2) LASER TO IRRADIATE THE SPECIMEN AND A THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA TO VIEW THE SPECIMEN'S IRRADIATED SURFACE. THE TECHNIQUE IS CAPABLE OF PROVIDING A VERSATILE HIGH RESOLUTION REAL-TIME NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST FOR SUBSURFACE DEFECTS IN LARGE SPECIMENS. FOR THE TESTS INDICATED IT IS SUPERIOR TO PASSIVE THERMOGRAM TECHNIQUES. (MODIFIED).

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of the most common nondestructive testing(NDT) techniques used for the testing and evaluation fiber-reinforced composite structures, during manufacturing and/or in service stages. In order to facilitate the understanding and the utility of the different NDT techniques presented, the book first provides some information regarding the defects and material degradation mechanisms observed in fiber-reinforced composite structures as well as their general description and most probable causes. It is written based on the extensive scientific research and engineering backgrounds of the authors in the NDT and structural health monitoring (SHM) of structural systems from various areas including electrical, mechanical, materials, civil and biomedical engineering. Pursuing a rigorous approach, the book establishes a fundamental framework for the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, while emphasizing on the importance of technique’s spatial resolution, integrated systems analysis and the significance of the influence stemming from the applicability of the NDT and the physical parameters of the test structures in the selection and utilization of adequate NDT techniques. The book is intended for students who are interested in the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, researchers investigating the applicability of different NDT techniques to the inspections of structural systems, and NDT researchers and engineers working on the optimization of NDT systems for specific applications involving the use of fiber-reinforced composite structures.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active infrared nondestructive testing (IRNDT) instrumentation and techniques were used to detect programmed defects in metallic materials. A CO2 laser was employed to inject relatively large amounts of thermal energy into a sample, and a sensitive infrared radiometer was used to detect the resulting surface temperature perturbations. The unique method described is anticipated to have wide application to many problems associated with the detection of fatigue cracks, voids, and inclusions in military items such as gun tubes, artillery recoil mechanisms, and aircraft components. The text contains the physical models of TNDT, heat transfer in defective and sound structures, and thermal properties of materials. Also included are the optimization of TNDT procedures, defect characterization, data processing in TNDT, active and passive TNDT systems, as well as elements of statistical data treatment and decision making. This text contains in-depth descriptions of applications in infrared/thermal testing within aerospace, power production, building, as well as the conservation of artistic monuments The book is intended for the industrial specialists who are involved in technical diagnostics and nondestructive testing. It may also be useful for academic researchers, undergraduate, graduate and PhD university students.

Book excerpt: With national trade barriers falling, causing the expansion of the com petitive global market, the question of quality control has become an essential issue for the 1990s. The time where the promise was to replace a product if it does not work seems to have passed; what is more impor tant now is not so much a reduction in what is going wrong but an increase of what is going right the first time (Feigenbaum 1990). This new trend is sometimes referred to as total quality. Among the many advantages ofthis zero-defect manufacturing policy, we can enumerate (Laurin 1990): superior marketability of wholly de pendable products, enormous gain in productivity, elimination of waste ful cost in replacing poor quality work and retrofitting rejected products from the field. Although total quality is a relatively new and attractive concept for mass products such as cars, consumer electronics and per sonal computers, in many fields, mainly aerospace and military, it has been the rule for years because of security reasons.
