Book excerpt: Vision-based control of wheeled mobile robots is an interesting field of research from a scientific and even social point of view due to its potential applicability. This book presents a formal treatment of some aspects of control theory applied to the problem of vision-based pose regulation of wheeled mobile robots. In this problem, the robot has to reach a desired position and orientation, which are specified by a target image. It is faced in such a way that vision and control are unified to achieve stability of the closed loop, a large region of convergence, without local minima and good robustness against parametric uncertainty. Three different control schemes that rely on monocular vision as unique sensor are presented and evaluated experimentally. A common benefit of these approaches is that they are valid for imaging systems obeying approximately a central projection model, e.g., conventional cameras, catadioptric systems and some fisheye cameras. Thus, the presented control schemes are generic approaches. A minimum set of visual measurements, integrated in adequate task functions, are taken from a geometric constraint imposed between corresponding image features. Particularly, the epipolar geometry and the trifocal tensor are exploited since they can be used for generic scenes. A detailed experimental evaluation is presented for each control scheme.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present current work of the Intelligent Computer Graphics community, a community growing up year after year. This volume is a kind of continuation of the previously published Springer volume "Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Computer Graphics". Nowadays, intelligent techniques are more and more used in Computer Graphics in order, not only to optimise the processing time, but also to find more accurate solutions for a lot of Computer Graphics problems, than with traditional methods. This volume contains both invited and selected extended papers from the last 3IA Conference (3IA’2009), which has been held in Athens (Greece) in May 2009. The Computer Graphics areas approached in this volume are behavioural modelling, declarative modelling, intelligent modelling and rendering, data visualisation, scene understanding, realistic rendering, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human interaction and the robot's autonomy are key functions that can spread the use of the robot in human daily life. The remote interaction is a special type of human-robot interaction, where the human and the robot are separated by physical barriers but linked via telematics technologies (= telecommunication + informatics). Due to the nature of intelligence needed for the modern robots, remote interaction systems must combine the dream of the artificial intelligence field of creating an intelligent being, creature, or program with human-computer interaction's vision of building systems that are centred around the user's needs and desires. This introduces a number of technical challenges, which must be addressed such as local autonomy, control strategy, communication medium constraints, feedback methods and control interfaces. In this book, these considerations are discussed. The book also presents a multi-layer architecture, which can be used to facilitate the remote interaction with mobile robots using different interaction elements for research and educational purposes.

It reviews commonly used evaluation methods, and shows that they are not always suitable for this purpose. Using representative case studies, the book identifies good and bad practices for evaluating human-robot interactions and proposes new standardized processes as well as recommendations, carefully developed on the basis of intensive discussions between specialists in various HRI-related disciplines, e.g. psychology, ethology, ergonomics, sociology, ethnography, robotics, and computer science. The book is the result of a close, long-standing collaboration between the editors and the invited contributors, including, but not limited to, their inspiring discussions at the workshop on Evaluation Methods Standardization for Human-Robot Interaction (EMSHRI), which have been organized yearly since 2015. By highlighting and weighing good and bad practices in evaluation design for HRI, the book will stimulate the scientific community to search for better solutions, take advantages of interdisciplinary collaborations, and encourage the development of new standards to accommodate the growing presence of robots in the day-to-day and social lives of human beings.
