Book excerpt: Concrete deterioration standards containing various levels of microcracks were engineered by adding calcium sulfate to the concrete mixture and curing under moisture at 38 deg. C (100 deg. F). The level of the mircocracks was classified according to the speed of the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) through the specimens using the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) C 597 (ASTM 1994c) test method and was found to vary uniformly from 1,737 to 4,877 m/sec (5,700 to 16,000 ft/sec). After receiving some preprocessing, 186 ultrasonic pulse echo (UPE) signals were used as input training examples for the artificial neural network (ANN) system. Target values for the ANN were the measured UPVs as determined form the ASTM C 597 test method. The correlation coefficient from a least squares fit was 98.6 percent. After training, the ANN was performance tested with 30 UPE signals that the model had not seen in training. A least squares fit demonstrated that the output velocities from the ANN correlated well with the measured (target) UPVs. The correlation coefficient was 84.8 percent. The system was able to rank all six specimens in the correct order of deterioration. This investigation demonstrates that the automated interpretation of UPE signals for continuous interfaces by the ANN is feasible.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deterioration of concrete in structure is a result of several internal or external degradation mechanism and which results in distress of the structure i.e. decrease in strength and integrity of the structure. the state of distress is often hidden from view and is only evident at a stage where there is significant reduction in strength of the structure. defects are open introduced during construction and are viewed during in services life. Some deterioration is viewed physically in the early age or during the services life of the structure in terms of spalling, surface crack, swelling and honeycombing. This deterioration collectively or individually results in reducing the load carrying capacity in terms of the distress of the structure. In this project, the common defects in the concrete structures and mapping techniques by nondestructive test are presented. Among the various techniques of the nondestructived tests, the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and DOCtor's impact echo were chosen for their effectiveness. The UPV is used to estimate the concrete strength, detecting flaws such as voids and cracks and also to investigate the effects of smaller diameter bar in the concrete. In detecting various sizea of voids by the Impact-echo test techiniques a format was suggested to identify the from the frequency spectrum. In the bridge condition assessment by nondestructive test techniques most common problem encountered were correlationof cube crushing strength to the UPV values, in order to determine residual strength of the structure in different enviromental conditions. also the other defects such as cracks and voids in the concrete, which does not have any standard guideline to identify them by theabove NDT techniques to use in the bridge condition assessment. This project has dealt with large number of specimens between the actual condition and those of the values given by the NDT results. A number of beam specimens were also cast with known defects in the concrete in order to obtain and suggest standard investigation procedure. 108 standard cubes with different grades and enviromental conditions were cast. Also eight beams and a slab were casting having known common defects. From the strength- UPV correlation nine numbers of regression equations were suggested. A standard transducer spacing has been suggested for detecting crack depth of to 50 to 125mm range. The effect of bar sizes on UPV test results was also obtained. Reinforced concrete slabs or decks having bar diameter greater than 10mm diameter will be affect the reading of UPV. Based on the obtained resuls a computer database system for NDT has been made to accomodate and fulfill necessary requirements of knowledge base system. Hence this knowledge base system will be used for bridge condition assessment.

Book Synopsis Infrared Thermography Recent Advances and Future Trends by : Carosena Meola
Download or read book Infrared Thermography Recent Advances and Future Trends written by Carosena Meola and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-invasive methodology which allows for detection of thermal energy that is radiated from objects in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, for conversion of such energy into a visible image (such as a surface temperature map). This feature represents a great potential to be exploited in a vast variety of fields from aerospace to civil engineering, to medicine, to agriculture, etc. However, IRT is still not adequately enclosed in industrial instrumentation and there are still potential users who might benefit from the use of such a technique and who are not aware of their existence. This e-book conveys information about basic IRT theory, infrared detectors, signal digitalization and applications of infrared thermography in many fields such as medicine, foodstuff conservation, fluid-dynamics, architecture, anthropology, condition monitoring, non destructive testing and evaluation of materials and structures. The volume promotes an exchange of information between the academic world and industry, and shares methodologies which were independently developed and applied in specific disciplines.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves by : J. David N. Cheeke
Download or read book Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves written by J. David N. Cheeke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written at an intermediate level in a way that is easy to understand, Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves, Second Edition provides an up-to-date exposition of ultrasonics and some of its main applications. Designed specifically for newcomers to the field, this fully updated second edition emphasizes underlying physical concepts over mathematics. The first half covers the fundamentals of ultrasonic waves for isotropic media. Starting with bulk liquid and solid media, discussion extends to surface and plate effects, at which point the author introduces new modes such as Rayleigh and Lamb waves. This focus on only isotropic media simplifies the usually complex mathematics involved, enabling a clearer understanding of the underlying physics to avoid the complicated tensorial description characteristic of crystalline media. The second part of the book addresses a broad spectrum of industrial and research applications, including quartz crystal resonators, surface acoustic wave devices, MEMS and microacoustics, and acoustic sensors. It also provides a broad discussion on the use of ultrasonics for non-destructive evaluation. The author concentrates on the developing area of microacoustics, including exciting new work on the use of probe microscopy techniques in nanotechnology. Focusing on the physics of acoustic waves, as well as their propagation, technology, and applications, this book addresses viscoelasticity, as well as new concepts in acoustic microscopy. It updates coverage of ultrasonics in nature and developments in sonoluminescence, and it also compares new technologies, including use of atomic force acoustic microscopy and lasers. Highlighting both direct and indirect applications for readers working in neighboring disciplines, the author presents particularly important sections on the use of microacoustics and acoustic nanoprobes in next-generation devices and instruments.

This book was released on 2015-03-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of NDT (non-destructive testing) techniques used for the inspection of concrete structures is currently in high demand, because many existing structures have become aged and deteriorated in service. In order to formulate predictions on their stability and to estimate their safety, it is necessary to identify damage signals and to determine their causes. In this regard, the development and establishment of innovative and highly advanced non-destructive methods are required. Acoustic Emission (AE) and related NDE (non-destructive evaluation) techniques have been extensively used to determine crack detection and damage evaluation in concrete. With the move towards a more sustainable society, and the need to extend the long-term service life of infrastructure and aging and disastrous damage due to recent earthquakes, Acoustic Emission (AE) and Related Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) Techniques in the Fracture Mechanics of Concrete: Fundamentals and Applications is a critical reference source for civil engineers, contractors working in construction and materials scientists working both in industry and academia. Presents innovative Acoustic Emission (AE) and related non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, used for damage detection and inspection of aged and deteriorated concrete structures Contributions from recognized world-leaders in the application of acoustic emission (AE) and NDE techniques used for the damage assessment of concrete and concrete structures With the move towards a more sustainable society, and the need to extend the long-term service life of infrastructure and damage due to recent earthquakes, this book is of critical importance An essential knowledge resource for civil engineers, contractors working in construction and materials scientists working both in industry and academia
