Of particular interest are the hazards associated with exposure to heavy metals. Welding fumes contain a mixture of such metals, in the form of oxides, all with differing degrees of toxicity, thus complicating the quantitative assessment of the hazard involved. Routine monitoring and analysis of the fumes is used to assess exposure in relation to the relevant occupational exposure limits and, if non-compliance is determined, to implement control measures. The aim of this study is to assess the relative merits of the particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique as an alternative, multi-elemental, method of analysis.
