It was a time and place where communication was limited and all one had to depend on was family and neighbors. Superstition ran rampant amongst the people, as well as hard-core religion. It was common practice to mix folklore, spells, and religion together in the quiet solitude of the majestic hills. There were stories and legends told in hushed tones about demons, ghosts, spells being cast and curses being removed. The local fortune tellers, tea leaf readers, and water glass gazers were always available. Appalachian Magic begins in the forties and weaves a magical story about a young girl who grew up in the hills of Appalachia. She took the wisdom that she had learned from her ancestors and coupled it with her intuitive abilities to become a successful Appalachian Fortune Teller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After my first book "Appalachian Magic" was published, I received numerous e-mails from people wanting to know more about my childhood in Appalachia and how it shaped me into becoming a fortune teller. Even though I covered several areas in my first book, I will now go into depth about my childhood in my second book "Return to Appalachian Magic" and the many things I learned that were carried over into my adulthood. As stated in my first book, my given name was Janet, but my family and friends always called me by my nickname, Jany (pronounced Jan-eeee). Growing up in Appalachia was a lesson in itself. The unwritten laws were passed from generation to generation and everyone heeded and abided by these laws. There were no "maybes or ifs" or gray areas in the hill language. Everything was "straight talk"! It was either right or wrong and no one dared to step over the line. The ones who were bold enough to "thumb their nose" and venture over the line were shut out of society, shunned and talked about extensively. Forgiveness was a hard goal to achieve for those who had been cast out. As well as I can remember, the three unforgivables were lying, cheating and stealing. You were marked for a long time if you committed any of the "big three."

Book excerpt: In this “great starting point for those hoping to practice Appalachian folk magic” (Publishers Weekly), conjure man Jake Richards shares the root work practices and traditional magic he learned from his family as he grew up in the hills and hollers of Appalachia. Who were the old conjurors and witches of Appalachia? What were their practices and beliefs? How can you learn the ways of conjuring for yourself? Appalachian folk magic and conjure are little known today, but forty or fifty years ago just about every person you might ask in Appalachia either knew something about it themselves or knew someone who did it. These practices and “superstitions” are at the core of Appalachian culture. In Doctoring the Devil, Jake Richards speaks to those questions and more, offering the various ways of rooting out the “devil”—any unfriendly spirit bringing bad luck, poor health, and calamities of all sorts. Like the blue smoky mists that glide up the Appalachians, Jake leads his readers up the hillsides too, introducing us to folks along the way—hunters, farmers, blacksmiths, faith healers, preachers, and root-diggers. We’ll also meet the local spirits and learn root ways. Further up the hill, we delve into Jake’s notebooks—a personal collection of tried-and-true Appalachian recipes and roots for conjuring love, money, justice, and success.

Book excerpt: The Appalachian Mountain range is more than 2,400 miles long, stretching from Quebec to Alabama. Now, the rich folklore of southern Appalachia, with all of its unique magicks, is revealed in Mountain Magick (previously titled In a Graveyard at Midnight) by Edain McCoy. As a descendent of the famous feuding McCoy family (of the Kentucky-based Hatfield-McCoy rivalry), she is the ideal person to share the folk wisdom of these people. The Appalachian folk used omens, portents, curses, cures, and protections. Mountain Magick focuses on some of these magickal techniques, including ones for family and home, romance and children, health and healing. In this book you will learn the traditional Appalachian way to: - Do remote healings - Cast spells for love and romance - Cure warts with beans and a potato - Break a curse - End a headache with a cool vinegar compress - Wash away dandruff with an after-shampoo rinse of hops and sage - Stir up a windstorm by whistling - Use an old shoe to increase your good fortune In today's magickal community, Anglo-Celtic religions seem to be the most popular. Even if you are following a British or Irish tradition, you should not overlook the rich folk magick as revealed in Mountain Magick. Many of the people (and their traditions) in this area come from the Scottish and English immigrants who settled there as long ago as the mid-1700s. That is why you will find information on how to integrate the Appalachian folkways with your magickal lifestyle. The folk wisdom of the Appalachian people described in Mountain Magick is sure to intrigue you with its power and usability. Get your copy today.
