Book excerpt: There are millions of Christian women who have heard the call of God to ministry. They are ready, willing and able to preach the gospel and make disciples. However, many of them have been discouraged from doing these very things not by the world but by the church. This book was written to help women understand and answer the call to apostolic ministry. Its purpose is to both clarify the nature of apostolic ministry and to help women recognize that they are to work alongside the men in the church to fulfill the Great Commission: preaching the gospel, making disciples, and leading the Body of Christ into its future.

Book excerpt: "Buried treasure" is a popular way of describing women in the New Testament. Rarely are these women presented as role models and rarely do they get mentioned in homilies! Choices for Sunday readings do little to highlight these women's contributions to the early church and the spread of Christianity. The women portrayed in this book embody the enduring values that answer our spiritual needs and satisfy our spiritual hunger. Their moral courage, selfless love and fidelity to Jesus' teachings make them models of discipleship-models that never go out of fashion. Turpin brings to life these women: Peter's wife, Salome, Mary (wife of Cleopas), Joanna (wife of Chuza), Martha and Mary of Bethany, Mary of Magdala, Mary of Jerusalem, Tabitha of Joppa, Lydia of Philippi, Prisca (coworker of Paul) and Phoebe (deacon of Cenchreae). Each chapter includes an imaginative portrait of the woman disciple, based on current Scripture scholarship and other historical and archaeological resources; an afterword that updates the reader on the woman; faith-sharing questions; sidebar quotes pertaining to the woman or the time period or some trait of the woman; and an original prayer about the woman.

Pierce, Wanda Studdard and Barbara Yoder Encourage You to Embrace Your Future Over the years, there has been a rising call to women to step forward and embrace the great destiny that God has in store for each of them. In recognition of this, Barbara Yoder has come together with a handful of others, both men and women, who sense the growing importance to release women into their God-given purpose. While some women may feel unworthy of their dreams because of past sins, God tells them to let go and look forward. When she is bathed in His glory, there is no obstacle that can stand in such a woman's way, and there is nothing that will keep her from the magnificent fulfillment of God's plan.

Book excerpt: HER NAME IS JUNIA. SHE WAS AN APOSTLE. And Paul the Apostle calls her outstanding among the apostles in Romans 16:7. But a centuries-old dark conspiracy changed her name to Junias - a man's name. She was meant to be hidden forever, buried under the deceptive lies forged by religious misogynists that would seek to eradicate her memory from the pages of Holy Scripture and early church history. But recent "truth seekers" among highly-respected academics and theologians over the past 20 or more years have resurrected her from the ashes of this deception to shine the light on the reputation of this incredible woman of God - Junia the Apostle. Junia Arise: Apostolic Women on the Frontlines is an anthology of 48 writers who have collaborated together with Apostle Axel Sippach to contribute a chapter each, highlighting an amazing woman in Scripture or church history that did tremendous things for God's Kingdom in spite of challenges, including the challenge of being a woman called, chosen, and anointed of God. This book will inspire, empower, and motivate you to be and do all God has called you to. Many of you may have felt hidden, buried, and forgotten like Junia, but God is raising you up and taking you from a place of obscurity to a place where you arise and shine because now your light has come.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, grade: A.1, , course: WOMEN AND RELIGION, language: English, abstract: Despite pronounced and lingering patriarchy and the contemptuous treatment of women as well as their contributions to the society and virtually all human endeavours, studies have proven women’s enormous contribution to humanity and divinity. Descriptively and objectively, this study appraises women’s enormous contributions to the Church, particularly in the New Testament era as well as in relation to the contemporary era. God, knowing woman more than man can ever attempt, created Eve for Adam’s companionship, help, support and procreation and chose Mary Blessed virgin to be the mother of Jesus. The most distinct role the woman had played to divinity is her conception, carrying and bringing of God the son, Jesus Christ, to the earth for the redemption of mankind. This study has found that women contributed enormously to apostolic work in the New Testament in several ways. It recommends that it is high time we devoted more literature and other forms of arts appreciation to women, past and present, rather than playing down such roles. There is need to appreciate women for whatever role they have played right from the beginning of Christ’s ministry through His disciples’ apostolic work to the present Church’s activities, well being/fare, growth and development. The study is anchored on the modernisation feminism theory, which rejects patriarchy. Qualitative approach, text-content analysis and both primary and secondary sources of data collation are employed. Several library print materials and the internet sources make up the secondary data sources, while interview, observation and intuition form the primary sources.

Book excerpt: In 2008, the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life initiated an Apostolic Visitation to examine the quality of life of women religious in the United States. Power of Sisterhood: Women Religious Tell the Story of the Apostolic Visitation serves as an historical record of the event and describes the experience of the women who participated in it. This book, initiated by a group of women in leadership in their communities during this unprecedented time, grew out of a survey that gleaned the essence of the experience from as many congregations of women religious as possible. After framing the Visitation as a story, situating it in an historical and theological context, tracing its chronology, and detailing the experience as revealed in the survey, the book delves into the deeper meaning of the Visitation for women religious as they experienced it and as they move into the future.

Book excerpt: Through the inspiring stories of eleven faithful women, Empowered will show girls that God is the true source of their power, strength, and purpose in life. In the pages of this book, girls will encounter women they may never have heard of and will learn some of the character traits that go along with the Christian walk. But they will also encounter a God who is faithful to complete the work He has begun in them. The stories in Empowered are about faithful women, but even more about a steadfast God. Girls don't have to do the things these women have done to live a life of purpose; by making a direct connection to their daily lives, readers will have a bigger and a more personal view of their Father and His love for them. The same God who was faithful to give Corrie ten Boom the love she needed to forgive her prison guard can help girls love the unlovable bullies at school. The love for Jesus that compelled Sophie Scholl to sacrifice her life for a higher cause can empower a young girl who sees injustice in the world around her. In a culture where the youth see value in terms of Instagram likes and viral videos, the life of Pandita Ramabai will show the value of humble worship. Empowered flips the popular idea of what it means to be a strong girl on its head, showing that real power comes from our loving Father through His Son and removing the pressure girls may feel to conquer the world on their own.
