Este libro se presenta como un aporte, soporte y guía, que surge de la inquietud constante y permanente de los autores en aportar un grano de arena en el arduo e inquietante ejercicio investigativo en los procesos iniciales, buscando explicar de manera clara y sencilla cada una de las etapas de la investigación para fomentar y fortalecer su comprensión y estimular su puesta en práctica. Los autores parten de la premisa de considerar la importancia de la comprensión conceptual como parte esencial para el aprendizaje y la praxis de los iniciados en la investigación, por esta razón el documento no contempla ejemplos ya que busca estimular la creación a partir de la comprensión y no caer en el error de limitar el pensamiento. El libro lo integran seis capítulos que inician con las generalidades destacando la importancia, paradigma e imaginarios de la investigación; luego trata acerca de los aspectos conceptuales fundamentales, le sigue lo relacionado con la metodología y el método de investigación, continua con la primeras fase(tema, título, problema y justificación de la investigación), a continuación trata acerca de la segunda fase (aspectos de referencia) y termina con la tercera fase (aspectos metodológicos). El documento integra a nivel general todos los tópicos fundamentales para desarrollar un estudio investigativo con el principal propósito de velar por la comprensión e interiorización de su significado y con ello despertar el interés por motivar la investigación como una forma de propender por el conocimiento.

Book excerpt: Integration has in recent decades emerged as the primary policy tool through which the nations of the global north (and increasingly the global south) shepherd their immigrants to achieve “the same social and economic outcomes as natives taking into account their characteristics” (OECD, 2018). Despite scholarship on the importance of social connections to facilitate feelings of belonging and settlement, lack of consensus around what integration means has led to bustling critique of the notion as prescribing processes through which migrant others must work their way into acceptance in the body social. Moreover, scholars recognise that discourses and practices of integration are often used as means to justify accompanying policies of disintegration and exclusion. Put differently, there is a humanitarian hand that cares and a hand that strikes. Frameworks for understanding migration and integration traverse the realms of theory, policy and practice, and are usually intertwined with discourses and regimes of care and connectedness. This Research Topic aims to further unsettle debates around integration and care through an engagement with the value commitments that underlie integration projects and that drive everyday practice and service provision, drawing upon perspectives beyond the global north.

Book excerpt: “South America is not the poorest continent in the world, but it may very well be the most unjust.” This statement by Ricardo Lagos, then president of Chile, at the Summit of the Americas in January 2004 captures nicely the dilemma that faces Latin American countries in the wake of the transition to democracy that swept across the continent in the last two decades of the twentieth century. While political rights are now available to citizens at unprecedented levels, social and economic rights lag far behind, and the fledgling democracies struggle with long legacies of poverty, inequality, and corruption. Key to understanding what is happening in Latin America today is the relationship between the state and civil society. In this ambitious book, Philip Oxhorn sets forth a theory of civil society adequate for explaining current developments in a way that such controversial neoconservative theories as Francis Fukuyama’s liberal triumphalism or Samuel Huntington’s “clash of civilizations” cannot. Inspired by the rich political sociology of an earlier era and the classic work of T. H. Marshall on citizenship, Oxhorn studies the process by which social groups are incorporated, or not, into national socioeconomic and political development through an approach that focuses on the “social construction of citizenship.”
