Ogereau investigates the origins and development of Christianity in the Roman province of Macedonia in the first six centuries CE. Turning to the epigraphic and archaeological evidence, Ogereau then examines Christianity’s dissemination throughout the province and its impact on Macedonian society in late antiquity, especially on its epigraphic habits and material culture.
Book Synopsis Alexander of Aphrodisias: On Aristotle Metaphysics 1 by : E.W. Dooley
Download or read book Alexander of Aphrodisias: On Aristotle Metaphysics 1 written by E.W. Dooley and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander of Aphrodisias was the greatest exponent of Aristotelianism after Aristotle, and his commentary on Metaphysics 1-5 is the most substantial commentary on the Metaphysics to have survived from antiquity. The commentary on book 1 has the further interest that over half of it is devoted to Aristotle's discussion of Plato. Aristotle's battery of objectives to the theory of Ideas is spelled out with fragmentary quotations and paraphrases from four of Aristotle's lost works, and we are given an extended account of Plato's 'unwritten doctrines' according to which the Ideas are numbers, namely the One and Indefinite Dyad. The deliberations for and against the theory of Ideas recorded by Alexander are more detailed than anything in Plato's dialogues and tell us more than any other source how they were conceived in Plato's most developed theory.

Download or read book The Aphrodisia written by William Percy and published by Anaphora Literary Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare marinal about disguised identities and loves among the Greco-Roman deities under the Mediterranean Sea. Percy described Aphrodisia as an experiment in a new genre he was inventing, the marinal, designed to contrast the pastoral set on land in the countryside. Beyond this setting, this comedy focuses on taking to an extreme the popular European trope of disguises by having most of the main characters reveal themselves to have an identity other than the one they present themselves as. Arion relates a sad story that is an original translation of a segment out of Bartas’ Weeks about him being a poor singer who was captured by pirates, but in the conclusion, Arion reveals himself to actually be Jupiter, the King of the gods in Roman mythology. And Talus pretends to be an engineer and Vulcan’s (god of fire) son, when he is really Neptune (god of water). In standard published plots from the Renaissance, these revelations prove to have been necessary to further the goals of the characters, but in this censored story, the disguises cause lifetimes of misery and prevent all who are disguised from achieving their romantic and power goals. Percy has designed a plot that subversively shows how common pseudonyms and fraudulent identities are in British society, as it confesses the Workshop’s role in selling ghostwriting services. On the surface, the story is dense with innovative love entanglements, and the mythological misadventures of complex and stumbling characters. The preparations for Empress Cytherea’s arrival and the Aphrodisia feast in her honor also showcases realistic details about what a day might have been like when the aristocratic Percy family prepared for James I’s visit to their Sion House on June 8, 1603, just before James was crowned. “Fascinating study of disguise, identity, self-fashioning, metamorphosis, and authorship. *****” —LibraryThing, Early Reviewers, Charles Alan Ralston Plot and Staging Text Terms, References, Questions, Exercises

Book Synopsis Urban Development and Regional Identity in the Eastern Roman Provinces, 50 BC-AD 250 by : Rubina Raja
Download or read book Urban Development and Regional Identity in the Eastern Roman Provinces, 50 BC-AD 250 written by Rubina Raja and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a comparative treatment of four East Roman provinces in the period 50 BC-AD 250 (Aphrodisias and Ephesos in Turkey, Athens in Greece, and Gerasa in Jordan), and it examines the instrumental factors behind regional and local urban developments. It argues that local communities were responsible for the organization and development of public space and buildings, which lends itself to an understanding of self-knowledge in these communities. Through a discussion of the interaction between architectural developments and historical and regional factors, this compelling study examines the interaction between the built environment, the social/political culture, and the urban identity in the eastern Roman Empire.
