Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GREATEST ATHLETES BY NUMBER Every number tells a story. 3, 7, 16, 23, 42. Our iconic athletes have become synonymous with the numbers they have worn-and this connection can run deep. Think about the players who have switched teams and traded Rolexes or cold hard cash to claim the same digits from a new teammate. In Any Given Number, Sports Illustrated raises the bar to a new level. Simply, who's the greatest athlete across all sports who wore a number best? While Wayne Gretzky may have 99 locked up, who's the ultimate No. 24? Willie Mays, Jeff Gordon or Kobe Bryant? At 33, would you pick Larry Bird or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Is it Mr. Hockey or Teddy Ballgame at 9? Who wins at 12, Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw or Joe Namath? How about Brett Favre or Bobby Orr at 4? Any Given Number delivers SI's authoritative take on who is the best of the best, from No. 00 to No. 99, breaking down the contenders to name an ultimate winner at each number. It also reveals little-known facts about a digit's history and colorful anecdotes about why an athlete chose it, alongside the stellar photography that is the hallmark of Sports Illustrated. Let the debate begin!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fundamental Principle of Digits of a Number is a new mathematical principle for which the author received a copyright from the United States Library of Congress. Two related ideas make it easy to understand this principle. The first idea is that a permutation of digits of a given number is an arrangement of the digits of the given number in any order such that the numerical quantity, which results from the arrangement of the digits of the given number, has the same digits and the same number of digits as the given number. The second idea is that the difference between two permutations of digits of a given number is governed by a mathematical law, The Fundamental Principle of Digits of a Number, which guarantees that the difference is divisible by 9. One day, the number 12 suddenly appeared on the author’s inner eye. It turned around and formed the number 21. The two numbers subtracted, and number 9 appeared. Then the three numbers disappeared from the author’s inner eye. The motion of the numbers by their own power, as if they were birds in the sky, prompted Chibamba Mulenga to investigate this event with the digits of other numbers, leading to his discovery of this mathematical principle.

She tries to remember who she is and where she came from, despite the efforts of the nuns who are in charge at the school and who tell her that she is not to use her own name but instead use the number they have assigned to her. When she goes home for summer holidays, Irene's parents decide never to send her and her brothers away again. But where will they hide? And what will happen when her parents disobey the law? Based on the life of co-author Jenny Kay Dupuis’ grandmother, I Am Not a Number is a hugely necessary book that brings a terrible part of Canada’s history to light in a way that children can learn from and relate to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we recognize that the number . 93371663 . . . is actually 2 IoglQ(e + 7r)/2 ? Gauss observed that the number 1. 85407467 . . . is (essentially) a rational value of an elliptic integral-an observation that was critical in the development of nineteenth century analysis. How do we decide that such a number is actually a special value of a familiar function without the tools Gauss had at his disposal, which were, presumably, phenomenal insight and a prodigious memory? Part of the answer, we hope, lies in this volume. This book is structured like a reverse telephone book, or more accurately, like a reverse handbook of special function values. It is a list of just over 100,000 eight-digit real numbers in the interval [0,1) that arise as the first eight digits of special values of familiar functions. It is designed for people, like ourselves, who encounter various numbers computationally and want to know if these numbers have some simple form. This is not a particularly well-defined endeavor-every eight-digit number is rational and this is not interesting. However, the chances of an eight digit number agreeing with a small rational, say with numerator and denominator less than twenty-five, is small. Thus the list is comprised primarily of special function evaluations at various algebraic and simple transcendental values. The exact numbers included are described below. Each entry consists of the first eight digits after the decimal point of the number in question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as bird guides help watchers tell birds apart by their color, songs, and behavior, The Kingdom of Infinite Number is the perfect handbook for identifying numbers in their native habitat. Taking a field guide-like approach, it offers a fresh way of looking at individual numbers and the properties that make them unique, which are also the properties essential for mental computation. The result provides new insights into mathematical patterns and relationships and an increased appreciation for the sheer wonder of numbers. Every number in this book is identified by its "field marks," "similar species," "personality," and "associations." For example, one field mark of the number 6 is that it is the first perfect number-- the sum of its divisors (1, 2, and 3) is equal to the number itself. Thus 28, the next perfect number, is a similar species. And the fact that 6 can easily be broken into 2 and 3 is part of its personality, a trait that is helpful when large numbers are being either multiplied or divided by 6. Associations with 6 include its relationship to the radius of a circle. In addition to such classifications, special attention is paid to dozens of other fascinating numbers, including zero, pi, 10 to the 76th power (the number of particles in the universe), transfinite and other exceptionally larger numbers, and the concept of infinity. Ideal for beginners but organized to appeal to the mathematically literate, The Kingdom of Infinite Number will not only add to readers' enjoyment of mathematics, but to their problem-solving abilities as well.
