Book Synopsis Last Chain on Billie by : Carol Bradley
Download or read book Last Chain on Billie written by Carol Bradley and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of a glittering but brutal circus world, Carol Bradley's Last Chain on Billie charts the history of elephants in America, the inspiring story of the Elephant Sanctuary and the spellbinding tale of a resilient elephant who defied the system even as she struggled to conquer her past, who never lost sight of the life she was meant to have. Left in the wild, Billie the elephant would have spent her days surrounded by family, free to wander the jungles of Asia. Instead, traders captured her as a baby and shipped her to America, where she learned to carry humans, stand on a tub and balance on one leg – the full repertoire of elephant tricks. For decades, Billie crisscrossed the country, dazzling audiences as she performed breathtaking stunts. But behind the scenes she lived a life of misery: traveling in trucks, chained for hours on end, barely able to move, giving eight-minute performances under harsh lights and to the sounds of blaring music. And worse. Finally, she got a lucky break. As part of the largest elephant rescue in American history, Billie wound up at a sanctuary for performing elephants in Tennessee, able once more to roam through open meadows and share her days with a herd. She would never be beaten again. But, overcome with anxiety, she withdrew from the rest of the elephants and refused to let anyone remove a chain still clamped around her leg. Her caregivers began to wonder if Billie could ever escape her emotional wounds. The compelling story of Billie's battle to reclaim her old self is a testament to the intelligence, emotional complexity and remarkable strength of all elephants, captive or free.

Book excerpt: "I no longer want to drown in life's waves, I want Lungs Like Elephants." An exercise in honesty and catharsis, "Lungs Like Elephants" champions a heart-on-my-sleeve ethos across its eclectic collection of poems. Though they vary greatly, Dawn's open-hearted wrestling ties these poems together into a candid journey of growth that feels true-to-life. The poems ping-pong between topics and time as she seeks to come to terms with where she has been, where she is, and where she is going. Dawn struggles with mistakes, anxiety, heart-break, and trauma while also gushing over her husband and finding beauty and joy in her past failures. To put it simply, life is difficult and complicated and beautiful and worth it and hard and beautiful, We start and fail and try again. We end up finally getting somewhere a little more each time, no matter how difficult the journey. This is the spirit of "Lungs Like Elephants": Dawn laying bare her life, in all its pain and joy, the inconsistencies and all, and boldly, bravely grappling for herself and her future. - Chris Bernstorf

Download or read book Anxiety written by Michael W. Eysenck and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theorists are increasingly arguing that it is fruitful to approach anxiety from the cognitive perspective, and the empirical evidence supports that contention. The cognitive perspective is also adopted in this book, but the approach represents a development and extension of earlier ones. For example, most previous theories and research have been based on anxiety either in clinical or in normal groups. In contrast, one of the central themes of this book is that there are great advantages to be gained from a joint consideration of clinical and normal anxiety. Another theme of this book is that it is of major importance to establish whether or not there is a cognitive vulnerability factor which is associated with at least some forms of clinical anxiety. It is argued (with supporting evidence) that there is a latent cognitive vulnerability factor for generalized anxiety disorder which manifests itself under stressful conditions. This vulnerability factor is characterized by hypervigilance, and is found predominantly in normals high in the personality dimension of trait anxiety. The scope of the book extends to the effects of anxiety on performance and to the phenomenon of worry, which is regarded as the cognitive component of anxiety. In both cases, a new theoretical framework is presented. Correction notice: In chapter 4, on pages 70-71, Christos Halkiopoulos should have been credited for his role as the inventor of the Dot Probe Paradigm and for the design and execution of the experiment discussed in Eysenck, M. W. (1991 a). Trait anxiety and cognition. In C. D. Spielberger, I. G. Sarason, Z. Kulczar, and J. Van Heck (Eds.), Stress and Emotion, Vol. 14. London: Hemisphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I can't face this. No one understands how hard it is for me. People are looking at me. Why am I like this? Why can I not be like everyone else? What's wrong with me? Sound familiar? Thoughts such as these can trigger us to feel anxious, stupid, upset and frustrated. We have choices. We can blame ourselves and others, avoid certain situations and worry. Or we can acknowledge our thoughts and feelings and take our power back from anxiety by facing it with understanding, courage and compassion. Here, taking a self-compassionate approach, Dr Claire Hayes presents anxiety as a normal part of every stage of life, from childhood through to adolescence and adulthood. Using the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dr Hayes helps us to recognise, understand and take control of the unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and actions that cause anxiety. This book offers hope to people who struggle with anxiety, as well as to those who support them. 'Helps us understand how we contribute unwittingly to our own difficulties, how we can change the way we think, feel and act, and thus live a more fulfilling life.' Dr Rosaleen McElvaney, Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Lecturer, School of Nursing and Human Sciences, DCU 'Offers gentle ways to hope and cope in the Age of Anxiety.' Professor Philip C. Kendall, Temple University, Philadelphia 'Truly outstanding ... I can think of no other work in this area that I would recommend as strongly.' Download or read book Silent Thunder written by Katy Payne and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A natural history rich in observation of the animal world and how humans participate in it, Silent Thunder is also a passionate story of scientist Katy Payne’s spiritual quest as she turns a keen eye on her role in this world. Starting with the story of her revolutionary discovery that elephants use infrasonic sounds—sounds below the range of human hearing—to communicate, Payne shares what she learned from her fascinating field research in Africa, research that reveals new insights into elephants’ social lives. When five of the elephant families she studies are the victims of culling, Payne’s approach to her research changes, as she fights valiantly to protect the elephants. The result of her research, and the touching insights gained from Africans she worked with and the elephants she studied, give a vivid impression of Payne’s view from the front lines of the natural preservation effort. Like Peter Matthiessen’s The Snow Leopard and the writings of Jane Goodall, Silent Thunder demonstrates how a commitment to all life can bring one’s own into a new focus.

Download or read book Anxiety Rx written by Russell Kennedy and published by St. Martin's Essentials. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From physician and neuroscientist Russell Kennedy, MD comes an award-winning book that offers a revolutionary, life-changing approach to healing anxiety. Break the cycle of anxiety with the newly upgraded and expanded second edition. After years of trying different therapies for his debilitating anxiety without success, Dr. Russell Kennedy had an epiphany: anxiety does not start in the brain. Anxiety starts in the body, where trauma is stored and physical and emotional perception begin. Alarm bells originating in the body are what trigger those anxious thoughts that we call anxiety, and Russ realized that true healing starts only when we learn not to conflate the two. He understood that existing therapies focused only on the mind would never get to the root of the problem—at best, they could help manage symptoms, but they’d never truly heal anxiety. Wanting to make a difference for the millions who suffer from anxiety disorder, Russ created Anxiety Rx, a book that blends his personal story with medical science, neuroscience, and developmental psychology. Readers learn how to sever the connection between the somatic alarm and the flood of anxious thoughts—in the process they begin to heal old trauma and gain a sense of control previously unknown. Russ offers techniques not only for our thinking minds, but for our feeling bodies, changing not just our mindset, but our “body-set.” Unraveling the intricate relationship between anxiety, the body, and the mind, Anxiety Rx offers a profound path toward healing and growth.
