Download or read book Contemporary Southeast Asian Performance written by Matthew Isaac Cohen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutual borrowing, fluid transactions and transformations of performances and performers have a long and enduring history in Southeast Asia, but this trend has been heightened and made more vivid in the contemporary period. The omnipresence of global communications has provoked and inspired yet more novel experiments and collaborations between cosmopolitan artists and globally-oriented performers. This volume offers vital insights into recent developments in Southeast Asian performance. It demonstrates the ways in which contemporary artists and performers are increasingly working betwixt the traditional boundaries of the nation and discourses of identity. The essays collected here are testament to ongoing conversations and relations among scholars, practitioners and scholar-practitioners in Southeast Asia and around the world.
Book Synopsis Puppets, Masks, and Performing Objects by : John Bell
Download or read book Puppets, Masks, and Performing Objects written by John Bell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, which originally appeared as a special issue of TDR/The Drama Review, looks at puppets, masks, and other performing objects from a broad range of perspectives. Puppets and masks are central to some of the oldest worldwide forms of art making and performance, as well as some of the newest. In the twentieth century, French symbolists, Russian futurists and constructivists, Prague School semioticians, and avant-garde artists around the world have all explored the experimental, social, and political value of performing objects. In recent years, puppets, masks, and objects have been the focus of Broadway musicals, postmodernist theory, political spectacle, performance art, and new academic programs, for example, at the California Institute of the Arts. This volume, which originally appeared as a special issue of TDR/The Drama Review, looks at puppets, masks, and other performing objects from a broad range of perspectives. The topics include Stephen Kaplin's new theory of puppet theater based on distance and ratio, a historical overview of mechanical and electrical performing objects, a Yiddish puppet theater of the 1920s and 1930s, an account of the Bread and Puppet Theater's Domestic Resurrection Circus and a manifesto by its founder, Peter Schumann, and interviews with director Julie Taymor and Peruvian mask-maker Gustavo Boada. The book also includes the first English translation of Pyotr Bogatyrev's influential 1923 essay on Czech and Russian puppet and folk theaters. Contributors John Bell, Pyotr Bogatyrev, Stephen Kaplin, Edward Portnoy, Richard Schechner, Peter Schumann, Salil Singh, Theodora Skipitares, Mark Sussman, Steve Tilllis

Book Synopsis Medieval Masculinities by : Clare A. Lees
Download or read book Medieval Masculinities written by Clare A. Lees and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1970s men's studies, and gender studies has earned its place in scholarship. What's often missing from such studies, however, is the insight that the concept of gender in general, and that of masculinity in particular, can be understood only in relation to individual societies, examined at specific historical and cultural moments. An application of this insight, "Medieval Masculinities" is the first full-length collection to explore the issues of men's studies and contemporary theories of gender within the context of the Middle Ages. Interdisciplinary and multicultural, the essays range from matrimony in medieval Italy to bachelorhood in "Renaissance Venice", from friars and saints to the male animal in the fables of Marie de France, from manhood in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", "Beowulf" and the "Roman d'Eneas" to men as "other", whether Muslim or Jew, in medieval Castilian Epic and Ballad. The authors are especially concerned with cultural manifestations of masculinity that transcend this particular historical period - idealized gender roles, political and economic factors in structuring social institutions, and the impact of masculinist ideology in fostering and maintaining power. Together, these essays constitute an important reassessment of traditional assumptions within medieval studies, as well as a major contribution to the evolving study of gender.

Book Synopsis The Performance Studies Reader by : Henry Bial
Download or read book The Performance Studies Reader written by Henry Bial and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Performance Studies Reader is a lively and much-needed anthology of critical writings on the burgeoning discipline of performance studies. It provides an overview of the full range of performance theory for undergraduates at all levels, and beginning graduate students in performance studies, theatre, performing arts and cultural studies. The collection is designed as a companion to Richard Schechner's popular Performance Studies: an Introduction (Routledge, 2002), but is also ideal as a stand-alone text. Henry Bial collects together key critical pieces from the field, referred to as 'suggested readings' in Performance Studies: an Introduction. He also broadens the discussion with additional selections. The structure and themes of the Reader closely follow those of Schechner's companion textbook. The articles in each section focus particularly on three primary areas in performance studies, theatre, anthropology and sociology/cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Father of Frankenstein by : Christopher Bram
Download or read book Father of Frankenstein written by Christopher Bram and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Whale was the most brilliant director of horror films Hollywood has ever seen, director of such classics as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein (and indeed every horror film rated with four stars in Halliwell's Film Guide). But he was by no means a typical Hollywood product, both because he was English and because he was openly gay in the Hollywood of the 30s. Christopher Bram's moving and powerful novel portrays Whale in his last weeks of life in 1957, overwhelmed by images of his past, his working class childhood in Britain, Hollywood premieres in the 30s, friendships with Elsa Lanchester, Charles Laughton and Elizabeth Taylor. Consumed by the contrast between his past and his present obscurity, he conspires with his young gardener to provide his life with the dramatic ending it deserves.
