Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in ethnographic and archival research on the Indonesian island of Bali, More Than Words challenges conventional understandings of textuality and writing as they pertain to the religious traditions of Southeast Asia. Through a nuanced study of Balinese script as employed in rites of healing, sorcery, and self-defense, Richard Fox explores the aims and desires embodied in the production and use of palm-leaf manuscripts, amulets, and other inscribed objects. Balinese often attribute both life and independent volition to manuscripts and copperplate inscriptions, presenting them with elaborate offerings. Commonly addressed with personal honorifics, these script-bearing objects may become partners with humans and other sentient beings in relations of exchange and mutual obligation. The question is how such practices of "the living letter" may be related to more recently emergent conceptions of writing—linked to academic philology, reform Hinduism, and local politics—which take Balinese letters to be a symbol of cultural heritage, and a neutral medium for the transmission of textual meaning. More than Words shows how Balinese practices of apotropaic writing—on palm-leaves, amulets, and bodies—challenge these notions, and yet coexist alongside them. Reflecting on this coexistence, Fox develops a theoretical approach to writing centered on the premise that such contradictory sensibilities hold wider significance than previously recognized for the history and practice of religion in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Book excerpt: Resulting from the EASA conference in Prague, this book addresses the crises of identity, purpose and interest in the changing world and examines how social anthropology must update its methodology when applied to comparisons across space and time.As various societies increasingly merge into one global society and consequently have to address crises of identity, purpose and interest, so must social anthropology re-examine and update its methodology.Grasping the Changing World concerns itself with European anthropology from an Eastern perspective rather than focusing exclusively on Eastern European anthropology. It offers comparative material analysing social situations in Russia, Indonesia, Britain, Central Europe, Southern Africa and the Arctic as a means to determine the success or failure of the same concepts in the understanding of present Central Europe.

Book excerpt: Cultural Anthropology: Global forces, local lives is an accessible ethnographically rich cultural anthropology textbook which gives a coherent and refreshingly new vision of the discipline and its subject matter--human diversity. The fifteen chapters and three extended case studies present all of the necessary areas of cultural anthropology, organizing them in conceptually and thematically meaningful and original ways. A full one-third of its content is dedicated to important global and historical cultural phenomena such as colonialism, nationalism, ethnicity and ethnic conflict, economic development, environmental issues, cultural revival, fundamentalism, and popular culture. The more conventional topics of anthropology (language, economics, kinship, politics, religion, race) are integrated into this broader discussion to reflect the changing content of contemporary courses. This well written and well organised text has been trialled both in the classroom and online. The author has extensive teaching experience and is especially good at presenting material clearly matching his exposition to the pace of students' understanding. Specially designed in colour to be useful to today's students, Cultural Anthropology: Global forces, local lives: supports study with chapter case studies on subjects as diverse as "Doing Anthropology at Microsoft" to "Banning Religious Symbols in France" explains difficult key terms with marginal glosses and links related topics with marginal cross-references assists revision with boxed chapter summaries, an extensive bibliography and index illustrates concepts and commentary with a vivid range of photographs drawn from the most contemporary anthropological sources provides a support website which includes study guides, powerpoint presentations, chapter supplements, multiple-choice, essay, and assignment questions, a model course mapped to the textbook, a flashcard glossary of terms, links to useful maps

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the politicization of anthropology in the 1970s, most anthropologists have been reluctant to approach the topic of universals—that is, phenomena that occur regularly in all known human societies. In this volume, Christoph Antweiler reasserts the importance of these cross-cultural commonalities for anthropological research and for life and co-existence beyond the academy. The question presented here is how anthropology can help us approach humanity in its entirety, understanding the world less as a globe, with an emphasis on differences, but as a planet, from a vantage point open to commonalities.
