Book Synopsis Luisa Capetillo, Pioneer Puerto Rican Feminist by : Norma Valle Ferrer
Download or read book Luisa Capetillo, Pioneer Puerto Rican Feminist written by Norma Valle Ferrer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luisa Capetillo (1879-1922) was a pioneer in the struggle for women's and workers' rights. A feminist and an anarchist, she earned her living as a labor leader and journalist. She wrote brilliant theoretical essays and published four books, including several plays. Ahead of her time, she espoused vegetarianism, a daily regime of Swedish calisthenics, and was the first woman in the Caribbean to wear pants in public. Her life can be read as a dramatic novel, every day an intense ode to personal and political liberation. This biography, the only in-depth historical account of her life and work, rescued her from oblivion and made her a popular icon throughout Latin America. This edition, the first available in English, brings Capetillo's inspiring story to a broader audience.

In topically arranged articles written by a team of international scholars, Literary Cultures of Latin America explores the shifting problems that have arisen across national borders, geographic regions, time periods, linguistic systems, and cultural traditions in literary history. Bucking the tradition of focusing almost exclusively on the great canons of literature, this unique reference work casts its net wider, exploring pop culture, sermons, scientific essays, and more. While collaborators are careful to note that these volumes offer only a snapshot of the diverse body of Latin American literature, Literary Cultures of Latin America highlights unique cultural perspectives that have never before received academic attention. Comprised of signed articles each with complete bibliographies, this unique reference also takes into account relevant political, anthropological, economic, geographic, historical, demographic, and sociological research in order to understand the full context of each community's literature.

Download or read book A Laboratory of Her Own written by Victoria L. Ketz and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laboratory of Her Own gathers diverse voices to address women's interaction with STEM fields in the context of Spanish cultural production. This volume focuses on the many ways the arts and humanities provide avenues for deepening the conversation about how women have been involved in, excluded from, and represented within the scientific realm. While women's historic exclusion from STEM fields has been receiving increased scrutiny worldwide, women within the Spanish context have been perhaps even more peripheral given the complex sociocultural structures emanating from gender norms and political ideologies dominant in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spain. Nonetheless, Spanish female cultural producers have long been engaged with science and technology, as expressed in literature, art, film, and other genres. Spanish arts and letters offer diverse representations of the relationships between women, gender, sexuality, race, and STEM fields. A Laboratory of Her Own studies representations of a diverse range of Spanish women and scientific cultural products from the late nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. STEM topics include the environment, biodiversity, temporal and spatial theories, medicine and reproductive rights, neuroscience, robotics, artificial intelligence, and quantum physics. These scientific themes and other issues are analyzed in narratives, paintings, poetry, photographs, science fiction, medical literature, translation, newswriting, film, and other forms.
