Book excerpt: In the chaotic decades after the death of Alexander the Great, the world of the Greek city-state became deeply embroiled in the political struggles and unremitting violence of his successors’ contest for supremacy. As these presumptive rulers turned to the practical reality of administering the disparate territories under their control, they increasingly developed new cities by merging smaller settlements into large urban agglomerations. This practice of synoikism gave rise to many of the most important cities of the age, initiated major shifts in patterns of settlement, and consolidated numerous previously independent polities. The result was the increasing transformation of the fragmented world of the small Greek polis into an urbanized network of cities. Drawing on a wide array of archaeological, epigraphic, and textual evidence, City and Empire in the Age of the Successors reinterprets the role of urbanization in the creation of the Hellenistic kingdoms and argues for the agency of local actors in the formation of these new imperial cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the cities of Ionia construct and express a distinct sense of Ionian identity under Roman rule? With the creation of the Roman province of Asia and the ever-growing incorporation of the Greeks into the Roman Empire, issues of identity gained new relevance and urgency for the Greek provincials. The Ionian cities are a special case as they, unlike many other cities in Asia Minor, were all old Greek poleis and could look back on a glorious tradition of great antiquity. Martin Hallmannsecker provides answers to this question using studies of the extant literary sources complemented with analyses of the rich epigraphic and numismatic material from the cities of Ionia. In doing so, he draws a more holistic and nuanced picture of the region and furthers understanding of Greek culture under the Roman Empire.

Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The Polis or City-State was the most striking feature of Ancient Greece, and its evolved form is one of the most important contributions of the Greeks to Western civilisation. In this classic study of the Greek city which combines history and sociology, Glotz traces the evolution of the Greek institutions, their essential characteristics, details of their construction and the underlying concepts that created and sustained them, mixing description and analytical insight, always remembering that human societies are not theoretical abstractions, but are comprised of living beings. Glotz's unique sensitivity to the many aspects of the Polis have made this volume required reading for all those interested in classical civilisation and ancient history and politics for over seventy years and there are many thought-provoking parallels with the politics of today.
