Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of globalization have long been dealt with in terms of economic and technological consequences, but what about the influence on education? Though still not a precise concept, what we understand as “globalization” is bringing forth numerous and profound changes in the economic, cultural, and political life of nations. With increased opportunities for interaction and learning, education around the world is rapidly becoming transformed. The essays contained in this comprehensive yet readable book, strive to provide a thorough examination of the impact these changes are having on how education is defined, whom it serves, and how it is assessed around the world. Globalization and Education is organized into three sections. The first addresses conceptual and theoretical issues underlying such notions as globalization, internationalization, and multilateralism. The second presents empirical data from various contries and provides examples of shifts and transformations within a specific level or modality of the educational system. The third looks at the totality of educational changes taking the nation as the unit of analysis.

Book Synopsis Journal of Latin American Theology, Volume 13, Number 1 by : Lindy Scott
Download or read book Journal of Latin American Theology, Volume 13, Number 1 written by Lindy Scott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology presents a selection of papers from the July 2017 conference, “Where is Protestantism in Latin America Headed? A Future-Oriented, Multidisciplinary Vision 500 Years after the Reformation.” This event was cosponsored by IAPCHE, the FTL, and CETI in Lima, Peru in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. It was a look back, with gratitude to God, for positive contributions in Latin America that can be traced to the Reformation. It was also a sobering recognition of the shortcomings of that renewal movement. Even more importantly, the scholars and practitioners involved proposed faithful steps for Protestant churches in Latin America to take in the foreseeable future. Some forty individuals gathered to explore many angles of the Reformation’s legacy in Latin America, including history, human rights, social justice, aesthetics and literature, church education, ecology and economic sustainability, and communication. The articles included here address Protestantism and Christian higher education, epistemology, autochthonous identity, Anabaptism, and development and decolonialism.

The contributors to this book argue that these changes post fundamental challenges to accepted notions of democracy, citizenship and development in the region. Using case studies from Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru, they analyze the ways in which new legal frameworks have been implemented, appropriated and contested within a wider context of accelerating economic and legal globalization, highlighting the key implications for social policy, human rights and social justice.

Download or read book Reclaiming the Land written by Sam Moyo and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural movements have recently emerged to become some of the most important social forces in opposition to neoliberalism. From Brazil and Mexico to Zimbabwe and the Philippines, rural movements of diverse political character, but all sharing the same social basis of dispossessed peasants and unemployed workers, have used land occupations and other tactics to confront the neoliberal state. This volume brings together for the first time across three continents - Africa, Latin America and Asia - an intellectually consistent set of original investigations into this new generation of rural social movements. These country studies seek to identify their social composition, strategies, tactics, and ideologies; to assess their relations with other social actors, including political parties, urban social movements, and international aid agencies and other institutions; and to examine their most common tactic, the land occupation, its origins, pace and patterns, as well as the responses of governments and landowners. At a more fundamental level, this volume explores the ways in which two decades of neoliberal policy - including new land tenure arrangements intended to hasten the commodification of land, and new land uses linked to global markets -- have undermined the social reproduction of the rural labour force and created the conditions for popular resistance. The volume demonstrates the longer-term potential impact of these movements. In economic terms, they raise the possibility of tackling immiseration by means of the redistribution of land and the reorganisation of production on a more efficient and socially responsible basis. And in political terms, breaking the power of landowners and transnational capital with interests in land could ultimately open the way to an alternative pattern of capital accumulation and development.
