Book excerpt: Answering questions from scholars and travelers on the Sufi path, this core statement of Sufi belief explains confusing and obscure points of devoted practice. The discussion covers the beliefs of the Pole of Time and the Circle of Saints, the states of extinction and subsistence, the nature of universal existence, and technical points concerning the relationship between master and novice. There are also rulings on more practical questions about the respective merits of fame and obscurity, the correct way to worship the spirits of the dead, and the causes of civil war. The book is also notable for a fascinating stylistic technique: the curt and pitiless dismissals of all questions not on the traveler's path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insight into Life is the real religion, which alone can help man to understand Life.' Hazrat Inayat Khan The Sufis have been using carefully constructed stories for teaching purposes for thousands of years. Though on the surface these often appear to be little more than fairy or folk tales, the Sufis hold that they enshrine - in their characters, plots and imagery - patterns and relationships that nurture a part of the mind not reachable in more conventional ways, thus increasing our understanding, flexibility and breadth of vision. Familiarization with this body of material can eventually provide answers to questions about our origins and our destiny. In this book John Baldock explores the rich body of literature the Sufis have produced to guide spiritual travellers. While explaining the significant teachings and emphasizing their significance for us, he sheds a timely light on the Sufis' fascinating perception of life, revealing it to be a process of the heart and not of the head, and offers intriguing pathways to further study and reflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inquiry made to obtain any information is known as an interrogation. While asking the person tries to get an answer that allows him to satisfy his doubts. The interviewers often ask simple questions in a very twisted fashion to confuse the candidates. Difficult questions-answers reflect the knowledge of the giver as well as his overall personality. For example: 'Which is heavier: a kilogram of feathers or 1000 grams of lead?' (Solution: Both the weights are equal). And 'What happened in Kolkata yesterday from 8 to 9 o'clock? (Solution: An hour had passed).' These questions have a trick because they are framed in such a way that the answers seem simple, but in reality, they are not. It can be said that the questioners confuse the candidates as they hide their answers using rhetorical resources and various devices. In some cases, the answer is found in the question itself, but in secret. Tricky questions are also used for fun or as a mental activity of logical practice. Like a truck driver passing down a street in the wrong direction, some policemen saw him, but they didn't say anything to him, why? (Solution: Because the truck driver was on foot). He shaves all day but still has a beard, who is he? (Solution: Barber). Some months have thirty days and others thirty-one, but how many months have twenty-eight? (Solution: Every month has at least twenty-eight days). Which object becomes wet When it dries? (Solution: Towel) How do you draw a square with three lines? (Solution: draw the square first and then draw three lines inside the square). Thus, an answer to a tricky question can lead to confusion due to the confusion-generated question. These types of questions are very specific to the areas in which people's knowledge or behavior is evaluated. Generally, such difficult questions can be perceived as misleading or incorrect because something is being implied that is not in reality. However, they can also be seen as methods whose precise purpose is to test the candidate and determine whether he or she is fully capable of answering the question that he or she is saying. I know. In this way, about five thousand questions and answers have been given in the present book, which is equally useful for all competitive examinations.

Book excerpt: "The Way of the Sufi presents an unparalleled cross-section of material from Sufi schools, teachings and classical writings, as a basic course of Sufi study. Its author, Idries Shah, is regarded as the most influential modern exponent of Sufi ideas. His many books on the subject seek to make some of the Eastern world's greatest teachings accessible to a Western audience. In this book, Shah begins with the outward aspects of the teaching most likely to puzzle the student coming fresh to the subject. He considers various attitudes to Sufi ideas, and evidence of their absorption into medieval Christianity, Hinduism, Jewish mysticism and modern philosophical teachings. The greater part of the book illuminates aspects of Sufi activity and practice relevant to the contemporary world." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism has long constituted one of the most powerful drawcards to people embracing Islam. This book considers a broad range of questions relating to Sufism, including its history, manifestations in various countries and communities, its expression in poetry, women and Sufism, and expressions among popular spirituality. In addition, the volume challenges the long-held view of Sufism as being necessarily peaceful, through a consideration in one paper of Sufis engaging in violent Jihad. The book works at the interface between the scholarly and the practical, using rigorous methodology to ensure that its findings are reliable, while also giving attention to how Sufi thinking impacts the daily lives of Sufis. This represents an original and important dimension of this study, given the significant role played by Sufis throughout Islamic history in enriching discussion of intellectual and charismatic questions, as well as informing popular practice among “Folk” Muslims.

This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imam, the Divine Guide, is the central point around which the Shi'ite religion turns. The power of Shi'ism comes from the actions of the Imam. This title is reserved exclusively for the sucessors of the prophets in their mission. The author shows that from the beginning of Shi'ite Islam until the tenth century, the Imam was primarily a master of knowledge with supernatural powers, not a jurist theologian. The Imam is the threshold through which God and the creatures communicate. He is thus a cosmic necessity, the key and the center of the universal economy of the sacred. The author presents Shi'ism as a religion founded on double dimensions where the role of the leader remains constantly central: perpetual initiation into divine secrets and continued confrontation with anti-initiation forces. Without esotericism, exotericism loses its meaning. Early Imamism is an esoteric doctrine. Historically, then, at the beginning of esotericism in Islam, we find an initiatory, mystical, and occultist doctrine. This is the first book to systematically explore the immense literature attributed to the Imams themselves in order to recover the authentic original vision. It restores an essential source of esotericism in the world of Islam.

Book excerpt: Jesus is seen as a representative of an ancient and continuing wisdom tradition identified with that of the Sufis. By his distinctive use of stories for teaching purposes, his sayings, and what the Sufis call 'action-teachings', including those actions known as 'miracles', Jesus is shown to have been quintessentially a Sufi master. Max Gorman shows how Sufism illuminates from within concepts central to Christianity: the kingdom of Heaven, son of God, baptism, resurrection - which can then be seen as states and stages in an evolutionary philosophy. This new edition of the classic work includes a new chapter on Gnosis.
