Book Synopsis Answering English Questions by Computer by : Robert F. Simmons
Download or read book Answering English Questions by Computer written by Robert F. Simmons and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen question-answering systems which are more or less completely programmed and operating are described and reviewed. The systems range from a conversation machine to programs which make sentences about pictures and systems which translate from English into logical calculi. Systems are classified as data based, text based, and inferential. Principals and methods of operations are detailed and discussed. It is concluded that the data base question answerer has passed from initial research into the developmental phase. The most difficult and important research questions for the advancement of general purpose language processors are seen to be concerned with measuring meaning, dealing with ambiguities, translating into formal languages and searching large tree structures. Book Synopsis Automatic Question-answering of English-like Questions about Arithmetic by : Manfred Kochen
Download or read book Automatic Question-answering of English-like Questions about Arithmetic written by Manfred Kochen and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes an English-like source language of questions and a procedure whereby a computer program can analyze any question in that language and produce a program that searches for the answer. The source language is an extension of a previously developed source language which consisted of questions about simple diagrams. The extended language admits questions involving counting and arithmetic. This extension is a second constructive step toward exploring the fundamental limits of how far such a source language can be extended toward encompassing all the answerable questions that can be posed in English and answered by a computer. The use of syntactic transformations to express relations (e.g., the commutative law) and definitions (e.g., primeness) is of special interest. (Author).

Book Synopsis Foundations of Logico-Linguistics by : W.S. Cooper
Download or read book Foundations of Logico-Linguistics written by W.S. Cooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1978-04-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 a mimeographed sheet of paper fell into my possession. It had been prepared by Ernest Adams of the Philosophy Department at Berkeley as a handout for a colloquim. Headed 'SOME FALLACIES OF FORMAL LOGIC' it simply listed eleven little pieces of reasoning, all in ordinary English, and all absurd. I still have the sheet, and quote a couple of the arguments here to give the idea. • If you throw switch S and switch T, the motor will start. There fore, either if you throw switch S the motor will start, or, if you throw switch T the motor will start . • It is not the case that if John passes history he will graduate. Therefore, John will pass history. The disconcerting thing about these inferences is, of course, that under the customary truth-functional interpretation of and, or, not, and if-then, they are supposed to be valid. What, if anything, is wrong? At first I was not disturbed by the examples. Having at that time consider able personal commitment to rationality in general and formal logic in par ticular, I felt it my duty and found myself easily able (or so I thought) to explain away most of them. But on reflection I had to admit that my expla nations had an ad hoc character, varying suspiciously from example to example.
