Download or read book Hypoxia and Anoxia written by Kusal Das and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular deprivation of oxygen is manifested by hypoxia, a deficiency of oxygen and anoxia, or the absence of oxygen supply to the tissues. This book entitled Hypoxia and Anoxia will cover a broad range of understanding on hypoxia and anoxia from molecular mechanisms to pathophysiology. Hypoxia and anoxia stimulate multiple systems through specific cell signal transduction pathways and regulate several transcriptional factors like HIF-1, REST to encode genes for VEGF, Epo, etc. This book will also highlight different types of hypoxia and anoxia along with their impact on apoptosis, cardiovascular pathophysiology, and glucose regulatory mechanisms. This book will be a ready reckoner to give a deep understanding of the oxygen-sensing environment in vivo for researchers, academicians, and clinicians throughout the world.
Download or read book Anoxia written by Alexander Altenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANOXIA defines the lack of free molecular oxygen in an environment. In the presence of organic matter, anaerobic prokaryotes produce compounds such as free radicals, hydrogen sulfide, or methane that are typically toxic to aerobes. The concomitance of suppressed respiration and presence of toxic substances suggests these habitats are inhospitable to Eukaryota. Ecologists sometimes term such environments 'Death Zones'. This book presents, however, a collection of remarkable adaptations to anoxia, observed in Eukaryotes such as protists, animals, plants and fungi. Case studies provide evidence for controlled beneficial use of anoxia by, for example, modification of free radicals, use of alternative electron donors for anaerobic metabolic pathways, and employment of anaerobic symbionts. The complex, interwoven existence of oxic and anoxic conditions in space and time is also highlighted as is the idea that eukaryotic inhabitation of anoxic habitats was established early in Earth history.
Download or read book Anoxia written by Pamela Padilla and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews how severe oxygen deprivation affects biological systems - from the molecular to the ecological level. The contributing authors come from diverse regions of the world, which proves the interest in the academic analysis of oxygen deprivation. The diversity in the experimental approach scientists take, in order to understand the influence oxygen deprivation has on living systems, is apparent throughout this book. One of the presented ideas deals with the exploration and examination of the physiological, cellular and genetic characteristics of killifish embryos and nematodes exposed to anoxia. Furthermore, the book includes material on the mechanisms regulating hypoxia and anoxia tolerance and their implications of on human health issues. Finally, new methodologies to examine oxygen deprivation and the impact of human-related activities on oxygen level, within important ecological systems such as Lake Victoria, are presented. There is no doubt that the oxygen molecule is central to every stratum of biological systems.

Book Synopsis Limited Effectiveness of Anoxic Anoxia in Protecting Against Residual Radiation Injury in Mammals by : J. S. Krebs
Download or read book Limited Effectiveness of Anoxic Anoxia in Protecting Against Residual Radiation Injury in Mammals written by J. S. Krebs and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protective effect of anoxic anoxia against residual biological effects of irradiation was measured and compared with the protective effect against acute injury. It was found that a degree of hypoxia sufficient to reduce the effective radiation dose for acute injury by more than half, failed to protect significantly against residual injury. The protective effect of the hypoxia against chronic or repeated radiation injury, was intermediate between that for acute and for residual injury.

Book Synopsis Large Igneous Provinces by : Richard E. Ernst
Download or read book Large Igneous Provinces written by Richard E. Ernst and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are intraplate magmatic events, involving volumes of mainly mafic magma upwards of 100,000 km3, and often above 1 million km3. They are linked to continental break-up, global environmental catastrophes, regional uplift and a variety of ore deposit types. In this up-to-date, fascinating book, leading expert Richard E. Ernst explores all aspects of LIPs, beginning by introducing their definition and essential characteristics. Topics covered include continental and oceanic LIPs; their origins, structures, and geochemistry; geological and environmental effects; association with silicic, carbonatite and kimberlite magmatism; and analogues of LIPs in the Archean, and on other planets. The book concludes with an assessment of LIPs' influence on natural resources such as mineral deposits, petroleum and aquifers. This is a one-stop resource for researchers and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines, including tectonics, igneous petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, Earth history, and planetary geology, and for mining industry professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports observations and findings using PET, SPECT, and other imaging technologies to identify tissue that is not getting sufficient oxygen, which can enhance the development and progress of disease and increase the resistance of tumors to radiation therapy. Nine papers from a workshop in Tubingen-Buhl, Germany in 1995 consider such aspects as the biology of technetium-based hypoxic tissue localizing compounds, molecular design approaches of hypoxia tracers, pre-clinical and clinical studies of quantifying hypoxia with radiolabeled fluoromisonidazole, and evaluating hypoxia in diabetes. Book Synopsis Inert Gases in the Control of Museum Insect Pests by : Charles Selwitz
Download or read book Inert Gases in the Control of Museum Insect Pests written by Charles Selwitz and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serious problem facing museum professionals is the protection of collections from damage due to insects. This book describes successful insect eradication procedures developed at the Getty Conservation Institute and elsewhere, whereby objects are held in an atmosphere of either nitrogen or argon containing less than 1000 ppm of oxygen—a process known as anoxia—or in an atmosphere of more than 60 percent carbon dioxide. Techniques, materials, and operating parameters are described in detail. The book also discusses adoption of this preservation technology, presenting the development of these methods and instructions for building and upgrading treatment systems, as well as recent case histories. The Research in Conservation reference series presents the findings of research conducted by the Getty Conservation Institute and its individual and institutional research partners, as well as state-of-the-art reviews of conservation literature. Each volume covers a topic of current interest to conservators and conservation scientists.
