Book excerpt: From the creator of THE ARRIVAL, a collection of essays illuminating his thoughts and advice for writers and artists, young and old. Shaun Tan is one of the world's most highly acclaimed narrative artists—his stories and images are loved by countless young and not-so-young readers around the world. Drawing upon 25 years as a picture book and comics creator, painter, and filmmaker, CREATURE explores the central obsession of this visionary artist, from casual doodles to studied oil-paintings. Beyond sketches for acclaimed works such as THE ARRIVAL, THE LOST THING, and TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA, this volume collects together for the first time unseen and stand-alone illustrations, each resonant with unwritten tales of their own. Detailed commentary by the artist offers an entertaining insight into the endless allure of imaginary, non-human beings and what they might tell us about our so-called "normal" human selves. Artists, writers, students, dreamers, and anyone interested in the deeper undercurrents of creativity, myth, and visual metaphor will find inspiration in these pages.

Book Synopsis The Monk and the Dragon by : John Clark
Download or read book The Monk and the Dragon written by John Clark and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monk lives a simple life high atop a cold and distant mountain and deep within a cave. He’s a serious sort, though peaceful. Yet he realizes that somehow he’s grown listless. One day, his serene life is disrupted by an exotic and fiery dragon who alights upon the stoop of his cave. The Dragon is darkly beautiful, all smelling of flint and ash. She bears many a scar from the ceaseless attacks upon her out in the world. She is angry and bitter and looking for a safe place to rest. The two begin a loving, yet tumultuous, relationship. The Monk and the Dragon is a fable. It’s based on authors John and Eveline’s true love story. Aided by charming wood cut prints, this book portrays the heart of how they met, found bliss, and then became troubled. It embodies a metaphor they developed through their writings to each other that helped them find their way back together.

Book Synopsis The Bible's First History by : Robert B. Coote
Download or read book The Bible's First History written by Robert B. Coote and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about an ancient writer, the J writer—the Yahwist—who produced a work of political imagination. This work is embedded mainly in the first four books of the Bible, best known for some of the most popular and influential biblical stories in Genesis and Exodus. The purpose of the book is to represent the whole of the original story with attention to its own meaning, without the influence of the other literary strands with which it was later supplemented. Therefore the work includes a fresh, complete translation of the text of the J writer, who produced the Bible’s first history. The translation itself helps to establish more clearly than ever the integrity of the J writer. The concern here is WHEN and WHY this history was written, especially in light of the concerns for justice and prosperity. Throughout it is demonstrated HOW and WHY this history comes from the court of David; it is a royal history of David’s subjects as though they were descended from pastoral nomads such as Abram, Isaac, and Jacob. It is argued that the intended audience of the history was probably those bedouin who regularly visited the court of David in Hebron and Jerusalem. Here is a bold and brilliant representation of the J writer’s composition, perhaps as it was originally intended to be read or heard. This ancient tour de force takes on new life in the hands of these skilled interpreters.
