Book Synopsis The Anodic Behaviour of Gold. Part 1. Oxidation in Acidic Solutions by :
Download or read book The Anodic Behaviour of Gold. Part 1. Oxidation in Acidic Solutions written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anodic behaviour of gold is of fundamental importance not only in processes involving the metal, such as its extraction, refining, electroplating, electroetching and electropolishing, but also in the many uses of gold in which its resistance to corrosion is critical. The first part of a review of this subject is presented. It deals with the anodic characteristics of gold in acidic solutions containing various ligands which form stable complexes with gold(I) or gold(III). The kinetics and mechanisms of the formation of oxide films on gold by anodic polarization are discussed, as well as the various theories regarding the chemical nature of the films and the influence that their formation has on the anodic dissolution and passivation of the metal. In those cases for which data were available, the mechanisms of the active dissolution of the metal are reviewed and its behaviour in the presence of various ligands is discussed with special reference to the proportions of gold(I), gold (III) and the oxidized forms of the ligands which are produced by anodic polarization at various potentials.

Book Synopsis Active Protective Coatings by : Anthony E. Hughes
Download or read book Active Protective Coatings written by Anthony E. Hughes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.

Book Synopsis Topics in Surface Chemistry by : Eric Kay
Download or read book Topics in Surface Chemistry written by Eric Kay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at an international symposium on Topics in Surface Chemistry which was held in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany., September 7-9, 1977. The symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany. It has been recognized for many years that our understanding of bulk phenomena and their subsequent exploitation depends largely on our ability to define correlations between microscopic structure and the physical and chemical phenomena of interest. The role played by surface phenomena in the overall behavior of a material has been a subject for speculation for a long time, but only during the last decade or so have experimental and theor etical tools been developed which make it possible to investigate surface structure and related surface phenomena uniquely. Numerous surface spectroscopies have been developed in recent years intended to describe the geometric, vibrational and electronic structure of a surface. Our present understanding of surface, thin film and interfacial phenomena in solid state physics owes much to these developments. In chemistry much of the interest in surface science has come from the obvious implications to such important and diverse fields as catalysis and corrosion. It takes little imagination to recognize that there are many other areas where advances in surface science can be brought to bear.

Book Synopsis Materials Handbook by : John A. Vaccari
Download or read book Materials Handbook written by John A. Vaccari and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2002-07-09 with total page 1244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Materials Handbook is an encyclopedic, A-to-Z organization of all types of materials, featuring their key performance properties, principal characteristics and applications in product design. Materials include ferrous and nonferrous metals, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, woods, composites, chemicals, minerals, textiles, fuels, foodstuffs and natural plant and animal substances --more than 13,000 in all. Properties are expressed in both U.S. customary and metric units and a thorough index eases finding details on each and every material. Introduced in 1929 and often known simply as "Brady's," this comprehensive, one-volume, 1244 page encyclopedia of materials is intended for executives, managers, supervisors, engineers, and technicians, in engineering, manufacturing, marketing, purchasing and sales as well as educators and students. Of the dozens of families of materials updated in the 15th Edition, the most extensive additions pertain to adhesives, activated carbon, aluminides, aluminum alloys, catalysts, ceramics, composites, fullerences, heat-transfer fluids, nanophase materials, nickel alloys, olefins, silicon nitride, stainless steels, thermoplastic elastomers, titanium alloys, tungsten alloys, valve alloys and welding and hard-facing alloys. Also widely updated are acrylics, brazing alloys, chelants, biodegradable plastics, molybdenum alloys, plastic alloys, recyclate plastics, superalloys, supercritical fluids and tool steels. New classes of materials added include aliphatic polyketones, carburizing secondary-hardening steels and polyarylene ether benzimidazoles. Carcinogens and materials likely to be cancer-causing in humans are listed for the first time.
