Book Synopsis Biochemistry of Plant Secondary Metabolism by : Michael Wink
Download or read book Biochemistry of Plant Secondary Metabolism written by Michael Wink and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-09-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secondary metabolites of plants were once considered to be waste products - today, their true value is understood. New methods of separation and structural elucidation, and advances in the investigation of biochemical activities, have increased our understanding of secondary metabolites. Their function as a defense mechanisms offers a great potential for technological gain. Secondary metabolites can be utilized in agriculture to breed stronger crops and in the manufacture of biorational pesticides. They can also be exploited by medicine as theraputic agents. And these are just two of the likely uses. This landmark volume presents articles by an impressive team of experts from leading laboratories. Each chapter considers a current understanding of secondary metabolites in nature and the potential exploitation of those qualities by the biotechnology industry.

The important names contributing to the volume include: M R Bockstaller (USA), L Duclaux (France), S Forster (Germany), W Fritzsche (Germany), L Jiang (China), C Lopez (Spain), W J Parak (Germany), B Samori (Italy), U S Schubert (The Netherlands), S Shinkai (Japan), A Stein (USA), S M Hou (China), and Y N Xia (USA).The volume serves both as a handy reference for experts active in the field and as an excellent introduction to scientists whose expertise lies elsewhere but who are interested in learning about this cutting-edge research area.
Book Synopsis Annual Plant Reviews, Insect-Plant Interactions by : Claudia Voelckel
Download or read book Annual Plant Reviews, Insect-Plant Interactions written by Claudia Voelckel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest volume in Wiley Blackwell’s prestigious Annual Plant Reviews brings together articles that describe the biochemical, genetic, and ecological aspects of plant interactions with insect herbivores.. The biochemistry section of this outstanding volume includes reviews highlighting significant findings in the area of plant signalling cascades, recognition of herbivore-associated molecular patterns, sequestration of plant defensive metabolites and perception of plant semiochemicals by insects. Chapters in the genetics section are focused on genetic mapping of herbivore resistance traits and the analysis of transcriptional responses in both plants and insects. The ecology section includes chapters that describe plant-insect interactions at a higher level, including multitrophic interactions, investigations of the cost-benefit paradigm and the altitudinal niche-breadth hypothesis, and a re-evaluation of co-evolution in the light of recent molecular research. Written by many of the world’s leading researchers in these subjects, and edited by Claudia Voelckel and Georg Jander, this volume is designed for students and researchers with some background in plant molecular biology or ecology, who would like to learn more about recent advances or obtain a more in-depth understanding of this field. This volume will also be of great use and interest to a wide range of plant scientists and entomologists and is an essential purchase for universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught. Book Synopsis Advances in Developmental Biochemistry by : Paul Wassarman
Download or read book Advances in Developmental Biochemistry written by Paul Wassarman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-04-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3 of Advances in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry consists of five chapters that review specific aspects of mammalian and fly development. In Chapter 1, D. Chapman and D. Wolgemuth discuss the role of protein kinases, especially tyrosine-and serine/threonine kinases, in regulating cell cycle events during mammalian gametogenesis. IN Chapter 2, M. Lundell and J. Hirsh discuss the regulation of the DOPA decarboxylase gene during Drosophila development. DO PA decarboxylase is a key enzyme in biogenic amine biosynthesis and its expression is subject to both transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation. In Chapter 3, S. Potter discusses the role of homeobox genes as master switches determining the developmental destinies of groups of cells during murine development. In Chapter 4, G. Cooper discusses the expression and function of the c-mos proto-oncogene in mammalian germ cells where it plays a central role in regulating the meiotic cell cycle. In Chapter 5, F. Beermann, R. Ganß, and G. Schütz discuss the regulation of pigmentation during mammalian development, with emphasis on the production of melanin in mouse melanocytes.
Book Synopsis A Guidebook to Biochemistry by : Michael Yudkin
Download or read book A Guidebook to Biochemistry written by Michael Yudkin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-09-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised and expanded edition of the Guidebook to Biochemistry. Every chapter has been reviewed and brought up to date. A new chapter, on the cell and membrane transport, has been included, and the single chapter on regulation in the previous edition has been greatly enlarged and divided into two chapters. Other topics that have received particular attention in this edition include lipids, cell membranes and the biochemical action of hormones. The chapter on genetics has been revised to take account of recent studies of the genetic organization of higher organisms, and a section on genetic engineering has been included. In making these changes the authors have taken care to adhere to the concept of the 'Guidebook' introduced by Kenneth Harrison and maintained by them in the 1971 edition: to 'introduce the reader to the important features of the subject by exemplifying and discussing crucial biochemical concepts'. For this reason they have been careful to restrict the increase in the total length of the book compared with the 1971 edition.
