Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Trustees of the Astor Library of the City of New-York: Made to the Legislature, January 29, 1850 The Trustees of the Astor Library, in obedience to the provisions of the ninth section of the act of the 18th of January, 1849, entitled An act to incorporate the Trustees of the Astor Library, requiring them to make to the Legislature in the month of January in each year, a report for the year ending on the thirty-first day of December, preceding, 1. Of the condition of the said library, 2. Of the funds and other property of the corporation, and 3. Of its receipts and expenditures during such year, Report: That in considering how far they are called on by the requirements above cited to enter into the detail of their proceedings, they have deemed it best in accordance with the intention of Mr. Astor, to whose munificence the library owes its existence, to give entire publicity to all they have done, in carrying out the purposes of his bequest. The library was designed by him to be essentially public in its character; and if they are not strictly enjoined to embrace in their annual reports, any proceeding or act on their part not directly calculated to illustrate the condition of the library, the general object of the grant and their own earnest desire to make known what they bare done and shall do from time to time, have determined them to present to the Legislature in each year a report, which shall contain all that can be considered of public interest.
