Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Research in New Hampshire: Annual Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1931 In times such as these every public agency must feel more keenly than ever the duty to fulfill its public trust: to return to the general good a greater sum in ultimate values than it has taken out. Such return is often difficult to measure accurately, especially in the research field, where we must often grope and fail. But it is only through constant experimentation that agriculture has advanced to its present levels, and only by the same means can we continue to progress. If public research seems costly, one may well consider how much more expensive and frequently impossible is research on the part of the individual farmer. And if public research seems inconclusive at times, it must be remembered that the observations of lone and untrained men would be hopelessly so. Civilization is committed to the laboratory and to trained research; and the pathway ahead out of economic depression would only be the darker if they were withdrawn. The past year has seen several important projects to a stage where conclusions could be drawn; among them, our economic fruit farm studies, the survey of Grafton County dairy farms, Boston milk consumption study, contact-insecticide project, study of root growth of white pine, studies in human nutrition, land utilization study, spray residues project, head lettuce investigation, etc. The following pages will give some details as to the significant results of the year. In the meantime it has been possible to develop several important new studies. 'The dairy situation in New England is acute, and one of the pivotal questions is the relative cost of Grade A as compared with Grade B milk. We are conducting a study of the practices and factors affecting marketing costs and quality of product. Of equal importance to the dairy industry should be a series of efficiency studies in the Connecticut Valley, dealing with dairy farm organization and production practices. With the completion of these projects, as well as of the Grafton County survey, previously noted, the Experiment Station should be in a position to give new counsel that will be welcome to many dairymen throughout the state. Other new investigations deal with coccidiosis of chickens, which has proved one of the most menacing of poultry diseases during recent years; and further development of the land utilization question; a beginning of definite Record of Performance work for poultry breeders was also made. The staff suffered a real loss during the year in the death of Philip R. Lowry, assistant entomologist, who had been with us for ten years and who died suddenly April 29 while engaged in his laboratory work. In the etiological studies plate cultures were made from the organs, peritoneal uid and yolk material of twenty birds with typical ruptured egg-yolk condition. Plain agar, meat infusion agar and meat infusion blood agar were used for isolation purposes, and the cultures were incubated both aerobically and anaerobically at 37 C. Thirty strains of bac teria were isolated and classified into four different Species on the basis of their morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. These organisms were Similar to the types identified in our previous studies. Pasteurella avicida could not be detected in any of the birds examined. The past few years have been a time of trial for the farmers of the state. The economic situation seems to have national and international implications - a sort of universal wave length which reaches to the last farm. The increased cost of grains, for example, has raised questions as to the possibility of raising more of our own feed stuffs. The influx of many new part-time and subsistence operators has resulted in specialized questions as to effective procedure for this new clientele. Meanwhile, new processes, new trends in the world at large are constantly reshaping the demand for our farm products. It is most fortunate that we have been able to carry on economic investigations during the past ten years. These studies have helped greatly to throw light on the unwieldy questions of marketing and economic production. The increasing importance of engineering problems has also been evident, and the need for much more work in this field is clear. The various fields of knowledge are becoming so specialized that there is more need than ever for a cooperative attack on many problems. We are finding it more and more advisable to get the combined viewpoints of specialists in different fields, and an increasing number of our research projects are now being prosecuted on a cooperative basis between different departments. There are similar opportunities between the Experiment Stations of the different states in this region. The northeastern Station directors have been cooperating in an attempt to coordinate research and to combine forces where feasible; and regional conferences of various specialists are proving of more and more importance. We are happy to announce that during the past year our chemical technique has been perfected for the determination of plant nutrients in soils. It is now possible to learn more about state soil samples than ever before, and to give more definite recommendations as to fertilizer treatment and soil management. Requests for this service are already increasing rapidly and are threatening to swamp our available facilities. The soil fertility studies of the last few years are already indicating important, facts as to soil management, and we now expect, through the cooperation of the Bureau of Soils of the United States Department of Agriculture, to begin next spring the long needed reconnaissance soil survey of the state. In one experiment to determine the effect of pressure on the protection afforded by Bordeaux mixture, Mr. Butler found that, when the pressure used was reduced from 180 pounds per square inch, to 90 pounds per square inch, the protection afforded was reduced one-half. The mixture applied under 180 pounds pressure was more thor oughly distributed over the plants than that applied under 90 pounds pres sure; and this probably accounts almost wholly for the better protection afforded, since the amount of copper applied per acre on doubling a given pressure is not increased by one-third.
