Book Synopsis Neighbors in Need by : Francis Green
Download or read book Neighbors in Need written by Francis Green and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Life's no more than a balancing act, with each of us on stage / No rights or wrongs, ifs, ands or buts; we react and turn the page," writes poet Dennis Gray. His newest work, Thoughts on Life in Rhyme and Sculpture, certainly reveals these thoughts in a meditation on the complexities, joys, and tribulations of being alive--from the stress of traffic to the troubling state of the environment and finding one's purpose amidst the craziness and uncertainty of life in our times. Mr. Gray expresses some "dark and troubling" concerns regarding the human condition and the harmful ways in which men and women treat one another and the environment. Dennis Gray's poetry gives great hope and inspiration, urging people to move beyond their innate tendencies toward selfishness and material greed to enhance their compassion and love for their fellow man. Thoughts on Life in Rhyme and Sculpture is an original, refreshing, and sometimes disconcerting look at life by an artist of great insight, wit, and empathy.

Download or read book Legal Challenges in Maritime Security written by John Norton Moore and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime security is a major challenge for the international community that cuts across a broad spectrum of scholarly disciplines and maritime operation. This volume provides in-depth analysis of current international and regional approaches to maritime security, cargo, port and supply chain security, maritime information sharing and capacity building. The work describes measures in place at multilateral and regional levels to improve information sharing and operational coordination regarding security threats to shipping, offshore installations and port facilities. Several chapters address measures aimed at reducing acts of piracy and armed robbery against shipping at sea. This edited volume contains articles by government officials, senior naval and coast guard commanders as well as by leading jurists and academics. One unique feature of this volume is that many of the contributions are by operational commanders with first–hand experience of the practical law enforcement problems involved in minimizing disruption to legitimate trade and business. This collection will appeal to all concerned with maritime security and the protection of vital international trade by sea. The CD accompanying the volume includes important documents such as the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as well many PowerPoint presentations from the thirty-first annual Virginia conference held in Heidelberg, Germany, May 24-26, 2007.

Book Synopsis Organ Shortage by : Anne-Maree Farrell
Download or read book Organ Shortage written by Anne-Maree Farrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ shortage is an ongoing problem in many countries. The needless death and suffering which have resulted necessitate an investigation into potential solutions. This examination of contemporary ethical means, both practical and policy-oriented, of reducing the shortfall in organs draws on the experiences of a range of countries. The authors focus on the resolution and negotiation of ethical conflict, examine systems approaches such as the 'Spanish model' and the US Breakthrough Collaboratives, evaluate policy proposals relating to incentives, presumed consent, and modifications regarding end-of-life care, and evaluate the greatly increased use of (non-heart-beating) donors suffering circulatory death, as well as living donors. The proposed strategies and solutions are not only capable of resolving the UK's own organ-shortage crisis, but also of being implemented in other countries grappling with how to address the growing gap between supply and demand for organs.

Book Synopsis Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee
Download or read book Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is principally about the governance, structure and accountability of the veterinary profession as conferred by the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. The profession must meet modern day standards of quality of service, and have the transparent and accountable disciplinary procedures demanded by the public. There is general agreement that aspects of the Act require modernisation, and that the disciplinary procedure is in urgent need of updating. But the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) does not have the support of the majority of the profession for its proposals on compulsory practice standards and compulsory continuing professional development. The RCVS has not yet formulated a detailed plan for how a new Council might be structured. Nor is there a clear vision of how "para-professionals" and those administering complementary and alternative therapies to animals ought to be regulated under a new Act. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has said that there is no funding available for work on a White Paper to update the Act until at least 2011. These next three years must be used by the profession as an opportunity to decide what it wants, and to iron out internal differences. The RCVS should analyse the costs of its proposals both for those practising and for the consumer. Any new Act should not overload the profession with unnecessary legislation, but it must safeguard the health and welfare of animals and also protect them, and their owners, from those who offer potentially dangerous treatments without sufficient knowledge or training.
