Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations and Sustainability: The South Asian Perspective is a collection of contributions from leading academics and practitioners which provides an overview of the key challenges and opportunities related to sustainability in South Asia. The last two decades have seen rapid and often dramatic changes in the institutional, economic and ecological contexts in which firms operating in South Asian economies find themselves. South Asia is increasingly seen both as a driver of global economic growth as well as a barrier to sustainable development. The most significant driver of change in the region has been the economic liberalization attempts of national governments, resulting in easier and faster flows of information, labour and capital between these economies and the rest of the world. Consequently, global environmental and social concerns are increasingly driving governmental and corporate decision-making processes for firms operating in South Asia. In responding to these emerging challenges, firms have begun to re-evaluate and redesign their strategies, structures and processes as well as incorporate sustainability principles into their strategies.Corporations and Sustainability: The South Asian Perspective thus delivers an important perspective for researchers as well as students of master's-level courses on business and environment. It is particularly useful for those trying to understand the key sustainability challenges in the South Asian context as well some of the solutions emerging in the critical areas of heavy industry and also service sectors.

Book excerpt: The economic impact analysis contained in this book shows how irrigation farming is particularly susceptible when applying certain water management policies in the Australian Murray-Darling Basin, one of the world largest river basins and Australia’s most fertile region. By comparing different pricing and non-pricing water management policies with the help of the Water Integrated Market Model, it is found that the impact of water demand reducing policies is most severe on crops that need to be intensively irrigated and are at the same time less water productive. A combination of increasingly frequent and severe droughts and the application of policies that decrease agricultural water demand, in the same region, will create a situation in which the highly water dependent crops rice and cotton cannot be cultivated at all.

The progress Kenya achieved on the growth and poverty reduction fronts stalled in 2008 owing to a series of adverse developments, including the global economic crisis. The political situation is generally stable, but there appears to be constraining consensus on key issues. The spillover effect of the global financial crisis slowed export growth, tourism receipts, remittances, and private capital inflows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate guide for bank management: how to survive and thrive throughout the business cycle An essential guide for bankers and students of finance everywhere, The Principles of Banking reiterates that the primary requirement of banking—sound capital and liquidity risk management—had been forgotten in the years prior to the financial crash. Serving as a policy guide for market practitioners and regulators at all levels, the book explains the keys to success that bankers need to follow during good times in order to be prepared for the bad, providing in-depth guidance and technical analysis of exactly what constitutes good banking practice. Accessible to professionals and students alike, The Principles of Banking covers issues of practical importance to bank practitioners, including asset-liability management, liquidity risk, internal transfer pricing, capital management, stress testing, and more. With an emphasis on viewing business cycles as patterns of stable and stressful market behavior, and rich with worked examples illustrating the key principles of bank asset-liability management, the book is an essential policy guide for today and tomorrow. It also offers readers access to an accompanying website holding policy templates and teaching aids. Illustrates how unsound banking practices that were evident in previous bank crashes were repeated during the creation of the 2007-2008 financial market crisis Provides a template that can be used to create a sound liquidity and asset-liability management framework at any bank An essential resource for the international banking community as it seeks to re-establish its credibility, as well as for students of finance Explains the original principles of banking, including sound lending policy and liquidity management, and why these need to be restated in order to avoid another bank crisis at the time of the next economic recession Covers topics of particular importance to students and academia, many of which are marginally—if ever—addressed in current text books on finance Offers readers access to a companion website featuring invaluable learning and teaching aids Written by a banking practitioner with extensive professional and teaching experience in the field, The Principles of Banking explains exactly how to get back to basics in risk management in the banking community, essential if we are to maintain a sustainable banking industry. “engaging and interesting and, more importantly, easily understood, allowing a clear picture to emerge of how the principle or concept under discussion is to be applied in the real world.” - Graeme Wolvaardt, Head of Market & Liquidity Risk Control, Europe Arab Bank Plc

It examines whether and in what ways China is capable of participating in multilateral interactions; if it is willing and able to provide global public goods to address a wide array of global problems; and what impact this would have on both global governance and order. The book provides a comprehensive assessment of China’s increasing influence over how world affairs are being managed; how far China, with increasing clout, interacts with other major powers in global governance, and what the consequences and implications are for the evolving global system and world order. This book is the first to explore China’s engagement with global governance in traditional and new securities.
