The report highlights that the performance of the world economy in 1983 and the early part of 1984 was significantly better than in the preceding several years. Economic expansion proceeded vigorously in the United States and Canada, and showed signs of spreading to other countries in the industrial world. Price inflation receded further in the seven largest industrial countries, dropping to its lowest level in 15 years. The current account deficit of developing countries was further reduced.

Download or read book Debt And Disorder written by John Loxley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important and controversial challenges feeing the international financial and trading system is the need for developing countries to meet their high and rapidly growing external debt obligations and foreign exchange requirements. Developing countries have suffered major shocks in the form of global recession, high real interest rates, weakened terms of trade, and rising protectionism against their exports. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Western central banks, and private financial institutions are seeking to avoid a collapse of the international financial system, and developing countries are seeking to grow through increased trade and access to external financing. Yet the fragility of current international trade and monetary systems seriously threatens the achievement of both sets of objectives. Professor Loxley integrates the structural adjustment experience of Third World countries with the policies, practices, and relationships of external financial agents in his discussion of options for reforming policy and of the limitations inherent in implementing these reforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Striving to adapt the progressive ideas of the pre-war modern movement to the specific human needs of post-war reconstruction, Alison and Peter Smithson were among the most influential and controversial architects of the latter half of the twentieth century. As younger members of CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) and as founding members of Team 10 they were at the heart of the debate on the future course of Modern Architecture. Their polemics and designs - addressing issues such as the rising consumer society and the orientation of urban planning - laid the foundations for New Brutalism and the Pop Art Movement of the 1960s. An important adaptation made by the Smithsons and their generation was the rejection of modernism's machine aesthetics. The new notions of place and territory were juxtaposed to Le Corbusier's machine à habiter. To the Smithsons a house was a particular place, which should be suited to its location and able to meet the ordinary requirements of everyday life and to accommodate its inhabitants' individual patterns of use. This exhibition examines the evolution of the Smithsons' approach to this everyday "art of inhabitation." It does this by extensively documenting most of their designs for individual dwellings, especially their optimistic House of the Future of 1956 and the series of renovations of and additions to the fairy-tale-like Hexenhaus in Germany from the late 1980s onward

Download or read book Our Own Way in This Part of the World written by Kwasi Konadu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kofi Dᴐnkᴐ was a blacksmith and farmer, as well as an important healer, intellectual, spiritual leader, settler of disputes, and custodian of shared values for his Ghanaian community. In Our Own Way in This Part of the World Kwasi Konadu centers Dᴐnkᴐ's life story and experiences in a communography of Dᴐnkᴐ's community and nation from the late nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth, which were shaped by historical forces from colonial Ghana's cocoa boom to decolonization and political and religious parochialism. Although Dᴐnkᴐ touched the lives of thousands of citizens and patients, neither he nor they appear in national or international archives covering the region. Yet his memory persists in his intellectual and healing legacy, and the story of his community offers a non-national, decolonized example of social organization structured around spiritual forces that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance for scholars to take their cues from the lived experiences and ideas of the people they study.
Book Synopsis From Marshall Plan to Debt Crisis by : Robert E. Wood
Download or read book From Marshall Plan to Debt Crisis written by Robert E. Wood and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of concessional financing to Third World countries from its postwar origins in the Marshall Plan to the debt crisis that engulfed virtually the entire Third World in the early 1980s. It documents the evolution of a system of aid provision, of structured access to concessional external financing. The central focus is on how this structure of access to aid has changed over time and shaped development options an choices in the Third World. From this perspective, the emergence of the debt crisis is closely connected to the role of aid in the world economy. Although the debt crisis had other roots as well, this book elucidates an important set of determinants, generally overlooked, within the systems of aid provision itself. It further seeks to show that the debt crisis defines a new era, not simply a set of discrete and extraordinary events beween, say, Mexico's request for rescheduling in August 1982 and Argentina's coming to terms with the International Monetary Fund in September 1984. The debt crisis has profoundly altered the international environment tha Third Wold countries face, and the legacy of debt will continue to be a central focus of international relations and development choices for years to come.
