Book Synopsis NATIONALIST MOVEMENT IN ODISHA by : Manas Kumar Das
Download or read book NATIONALIST MOVEMENT IN ODISHA written by Manas Kumar Das and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the 19th century witnessed the growth of organized nationalist movement in India. It arose to meet the challenge of foreign domination. The direct and indirect consequences of British rule provided the material, moral and intellectual conditions for the development of nationalist movement in India. In this connection, Odisha (previously Orissa) as a part of the nation also witnessed the reflections of it. In Odisha, nationalism developed in two different ways. First, the merger of all Odia-speaking regions and secondly, in the later phase with the growth of national awakening, the people of Odisha involved themselves with the mainstream of the national movement along with the rest of the country. However, the aim of the paper is to highlight the nationalist movement in Odisha. In fact, the history of nationalist movement in Odisha, despite the local differences and issues, was an expression of forces that represent an integral part of the all-India freedom struggle against British Raj.

Book Synopsis Imperial medicine and indigenous societies by : David Arnold
Download or read book Imperial medicine and indigenous societies written by David Arnold and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years it has become apparent that the interaction of imperialism with disease, medical research, and the administration of health policies is considerably more complex. This book reflects the breadth and interdisciplinary range of current scholarship applied to a variety of imperial experiences in different continents. Common themes and widely applicable modes of analysis emerge include the confrontation between indigenous and western medical systems, the role of medicine in war and resistance, and the nature of approaches to mental health. The book identifies disease and medicine as a site of contact, conflict and possible eventual convergence between western rulers and indigenous peoples, and illustrates the contradictions and rivalries within the imperial order. The causes and consequences of this rapid transition from white man's medicine to public health during the latter decades of the nineteenth and early years of the twentieth centuries are touched upon. By the late 1850s, each of the presidency towns of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras could boast its own 'asylum for the European insane'; about twenty 'native lunatic asylums' had been established in provincial towns. To many nineteenth-century British medical officers smallpox was 'the scourge of India'. Following the British discovery in 1901 of a major sleeping sickness epidemic in Uganda, King Leopold of Belgium invited the recently established Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to examine his Congo Free State. Cholera claimed its victims from all levels of society, including Americans, prominent Filipinos, Chinese, and Spaniards.
Book Synopsis Imperialism and the Natural World by : John MacDonald MacKenzie
Download or read book Imperialism and the Natural World written by John MacDonald MacKenzie and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many experts recognize that juvenile literature acts as an excellent reflector of the dominant ideas of an age; the values and fantasies of adult authors are often dressed up in fictional garb for youthful consumption. This collection examines a portion of the mass-produced juvenile literature, from the mid-19th century until the 1950s, focusing on the cluster of ideas connected with Britain's role in the maintenance of order and the spread of civilization. Western science, medicine, geographical ideas, and environmental assumptions were all vital to the creation of the imperial world system. The contributors to this volume illustrate new approaches to the study of conservation, botany, geology, economic geography, state scientific endeavor, and entomological and medical research in relation to the imperial rule of both Britain and France.
