The time is surely coming when she may take her rightful place in the Palace of the Arts of Peace. During the long and dreadful period of the war she has, oppressed by her two ugly sisters, Dora and Censor, remained ever the uncomplaining drudge, but developing in beauty nevertheless, as the following pages will bear witness. Her Prince, apparelled in aerial blue, has appeared, and to-day her devotion to duty and greatness of achievement are acclaimed on all sides. Without the camera - the eye of our victorious armies - we doubt whether the Teuton beast would yet be retreating to his lair. Now, free from war-time trammels, we look to the coming days for a great forward movement of our Cinderella. In the sphere of pictorial work this activity will not be the least marked. Ideas have become broadened and ideals confirmed. The exposure has been made on the horrors of war, the lens is capped, and a new film is being placed in position. What will the picture be? This prediction appears to have been well fulfilled. Whilst, during the war, the professional portrait photographer scored to a great extent by the very nature of his output, and amateur work was restricted, the removal of those restrictions, and the return to civil life of so many thousands of amateur photographers who had been in the army, has been productive of a notable revival of enthusiasm in the art in all directions. The boom has continued unabated throughout the past year, and the production of pictorial photographs has never been greater than at the present time. Under the circumstances, the chief difficulty in the preparation of this Annual, handicapped by the enhanced cost of production, has been, of necessity, to bring the number of contributions representative of modern pictorial photography within the limits of the space available. The task has not been an easy one, and to the authors of the many hundreds of pictures that have been sent for the purpose, but whose work it has not been possible to include, our thanks are just as sincere for their proffered assistance and evidences of goodwill as to those whose pictures have been selected for reproduction. For the past three years, unfortunately, it has been produced under the war cloud that overhangs Europe, and it may well be asked, therefore, to what extent the world cataclysm has affected the output and character of contemporary pictorial art with the camera. An inspection of the reproductions in this volume, and the articles concerning them, will supply the answer. While we are a nation at war, it would be a bad outlook for the future if everything else became entirely obliterated by the obsession of warfare. It would tend to destroy that balance of mind that has served the nation so well in the present struggle. The presence and reminder of a habit or hobby that stands for all that peace meant in the past has both a soothing and revivifying effect, one to restore confidence for the future. We would also call to mind that a knowledge of photography has proved of inestimable value in the present war. Hundreds of amateur photographers have been able to devote their knowledge of photography to work of the greatest usefulness in furthering our own and the Allie's cause. Its pursuit can therefore be looked on, in some measure, as of national importance. The number of pictures, both from this country and abroad, sent to us for selection for "Photograms of the Year" has on this occasion far exceeded that of the preceding two years. This fact speaks for itself, and we have to express our regrets to a still larger circle of friends this year than on previous occasions, that lack of space alone has in a great many instances prevented the inclusion of their contributions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photograms of the Year, 1921: The Annual Review of the World's Pictorial Photographic Work In the London Salon for 1921 the entry of fine pictorial work from all parts of the world was larger than in any previous year in the history of the exhibition, and the prestige of the Salon and the honour of being hung on its walls greater than ever: it was generally acknowledged that the exhibition was the most notable show of pictorial photography ever seen in London. The Salon, reflecting as it does the trend of the best pictorial photography of the day, emphasised one or two other points that have already been the subject of discussion in the photographic Press. First, it showed that the tendency towards making use of the human face and figure for picture-making is greater than that towards landscape or other non-personal subjects; secondly, that there is a decided slump in photography in colours or coloured photographs - in fact, we doubt, even if colour photography on paper in the popular sense of the term becomes an accomplished fact, whether it will: ever oust good monochrome work from favour; and, thirdly, that the present is the day of the hand camera: the best exhibition prints in many cases may be regarded as the apotheosis of the snapshot. The r.p.s. Exhibition in a lesser degree reflected the same tendencies, and one also saw on the walls of the annual show at Russell Square evidences of the energies oi the newly - formed and badly-needed pictorial group that has been evolved from. The heterogeneous membership of the Society. Pictorial groups, under various names, have gathered together to help forward the good work of photography as an art in all parts of the world. This has been notably the case in Scotland, where the Scottish Photographic Circle has held strongly supported exhibitions, and in Wales, which has developed in the Cardiff district a very definite school of pictorial workers of outstanding merit.
