Download or read book Christianity in Korea written by Robert E. Buswell, Jr. and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significance of Korea in world Christianity and the crucial role Christianity plays in contemporary Korean religious life, the tradition has been little studied in the West. Christianity in Korea seeks to fill this lacuna by providing a wide-ranging overview of the growth and development of Korean Christianity and the implications that development has had for Korean politics, interreligious dialogue, and gender and social issues. The volume begins with an accessibly written overview that traces in broad outline the history and development of Christianity on the peninsula. This is followed by chapters on broad themes, such as the survival of early Korean Catholics in a Neo-Confucian society, relations between Christian churches and colonial authorities during the Japanese occupation, premillennialism, and the theological significance of the division and prospective reunification of Korea. Others look in more detail at individuals and movements, including the story of the female martyr Kollumba Kang Wansuk; the influence of Presbyterianism on the renowned nationalist Ahn Changho; the sociopolitical and theological background of the Minjung Protestant Movement; and the success and challenges of Evangelical Protestantism in Korea. The book concludes with a discussion of how best to encourage a rapprochement between Buddhism and Christianity in Korea.

Book excerpt: Built upon the highly successful volume One Hundred Years of Korean-American Relations, 1882-1982, this book describes Korea's importance to the United States and the development of the current relationship. The ramifications of this relationship are evident by the facts that South Korea now constitutes America's seventh largest trading partner and 37,000 American troops remain stationed there on alert. North Korea, however, continues to harbor a deep resentment of the United States and its southern neighbor and maintains the fifth largest standing army in the world, situated just north of the world's most fortified demarcation line at the 38th parallel.

Book Synopsis Christianity in the Twentieth Century by : Brian Stanley
Download or read book Christianity in the Twentieth Century written by Brian Stanley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of unparalleled scope that charts the global transformation of Christianity during an age of profound political and cultural change Christianity in the Twentieth Century charts the transformation of one of the world's great religions during an age marked by world wars, genocide, nationalism, decolonization, and powerful ideological currents, many of them hostile to Christianity. Written by a leading scholar of world Christianity, the book traces how Christianity evolved from a religion defined by the culture and politics of Europe to the expanding polycentric and multicultural faith it is today--one whose growing popular support is strongest in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, China, and other parts of Asia. Brian Stanley sheds critical light on themes of central importance for understanding the global contours of modern Christianity, illustrating each one with contrasting case studies, usually taken from different parts of the world. Unlike other books on world Christianity, this one is not a regional survey or chronological narrative, nor does it focus on theology or ecclesiastical institutions. Rather, Stanley provides a history of Christianity as a popular faith experienced and lived by its adherents, telling a compelling and multifaceted story of Christendom's fortunes in Europe, North America, and across the rest of the globe. Transnational in scope and drawing on the latest scholarship, Christianity in the Twentieth Century demonstrates how Christianity has had less to fear from the onslaughts of secularism than from the readiness of Christians themselves to accommodate their faith to ideologies that privilege racial identity or radical individualism.
Book Synopsis Ecumenical Foundations by : William R. Hogg
Download or read book Ecumenical Foundations written by William R. Hogg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-08-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ecumenical Foundations Dr. Hogg has given us the definitive history of the origin and the first three decades of the International Missionary Council. Here is also a highly important contribution to our knowledge of missionary cooperation of significant phases of the early stages and development of the Ecumenical Movement. --Kenneth Scott, Latourette of Yale University This book appears at an opportune, one might say, a providential, moment. It focuses attention on the history and significance of the most creative international organization of these last revolutionary decades. It also provides answers to many questions, and clarifies many concepts which perplex intelligent Christians in all the churches. It is impossible to understand the background, genius, and problems of the Ecumenical Movement without recourse to this pioneer attempt to chart its course. --John A. Mackay, of Princeton Theological Seminary Dr. Hogg has done a magnificent piece of work and has provided an historical record of great importance. It is the indispensable volume for understanding one of the main streams of Christian unity. There is no other place where one can get so good a picture of the way in which the missionary movement has led to the present stage in teh ecumenical movement. --Samuel McCrea Cavert, General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ
