Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service of the United States: For the Fiscal Year 1922 Bubonic plague is perha s the most widespread of all diseases of a pestilential character in t e world, except smallpox. In the early part of the present fiscal year this disease threatened to become epidemic in the southern part of the United States, particularly in cities of the Gulf coast, but prompt and radical measures applied to local conditions in Galveston, Beaumont, and Pensacola, where the disease had gained a foothold, and the continuation of the measures already in force in New Orleans, served to avert its spread. Yellow fever foci were reported during the year in widely scattered areas on both the eastern and western coasts of Mexico, the eastern coast of Central America, and certain portions of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America. In spite of close and active com mercial relations with infected ports, and the occurrence of five cases of this disease on ships arriving at domestic ports situated in infectible territory, the disease was successfully excluded from our country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to feel smarter? Want to have the perfect quip at the tip of your tongue? Use Your Words combines Word Power Quizzes and Quotable Quotes from Reader's Digest, Amercia's Most Popular Magazine so you can do just that! Use Your Words is part word quiz book and part quote book, combined together in themed sections. It will be a combination of 2 of our most popular columns in Reader’s Digest Magazine—Word Power and Quotable Quotes. Quotable Quotes, as it appears today, first ran in January 1934. It was proceeded by similar quote columns, including Remarkable Remarks, which ran in the first ever issue of Reader's Digest in February 1922, and Significant Sayings, which ran in June 1922. These first columns featured the great minds of the day, including Herbert Hoover (before he became president), Lady Astor, and John D. Rockefeller. The quotes were, and continue to be, collected from a variety of books, speeches, journals, and articles. We've quoted both living and dead people. The column hasn't changed much, except for the art. It began as a one-page list of quotes and continues to be a one-page list of quotes. Quotable Quotes is second to Laughter the Best Medicine in column popularity. Word Power first ran in January 1945—January 2020 will mark 75 years. Word Power's creator, Wilfred Funk, was a poet and lexicographer—his family was the “Funk” of the reference publisher Funk & Wagnalls. He presented his quiz idea to Dewitt Wallace in 1944. Wilfred's son Peter Funk wrote the column from the 1960s to the 1990s. Current writers are a married couple who are well-known in the crossword/puzzle world: https://www.theatlantic.com/past/docs/unbound/wordgame/crbio.htm The column hasn’t changed much—it has 15 words now instead of 20. It has themed columns (car words, Italian words) rather than words based on RD. It has a sidebar that goes in-depth on something related to the theme. Word Power is our 3rd most popular column in the magazine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2023 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Chinese Film Classics, 1922–1949 is an essential guide to the first golden age of Chinese cinema. Offering detailed introductions to fourteen films, this study highlights the creative achievements of Chinese filmmakers in the decades leading up to 1949, when the Communists won the civil war and began nationalizing cultural industries. Christopher Rea reveals the uniqueness and complexity of Republican China’s cinematic masterworks, from the comedies and melodramas of the silent era to the talkies and musicals of the 1930s and 1940s. Each chapter appraises the artistry of a single film, highlighting its outstanding formal elements, from cinematography to editing to sound design. Examples include the slapstick gags of Laborer’s Love (1922), Ruan Lingyu’s star turn in Goddess (1934), Zhou Xuan’s mesmerizing performance in Street Angels (1937), Eileen Chang’s urbane comedy of manners Long Live the Missus! (1947), the wartime epic Spring River Flows East (1947), and Fei Mu’s acclaimed work of cinematic lyricism, Spring in a Small Town (1948). Rea shares new insights and archival discoveries about famous films, while explaining their significance in relation to politics, society, and global cinema. Lavishly illustrated and featuring extensive guides to further viewings and readings, Chinese Film Classics, 1922–1949 offers an accessible tour of China’s early contributions to the cinematic arts.
