Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotations on the Epistles of Paul to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians The church addressed. There are some doubts whether this epistle was addressed to the Church at Ephesus. The absence of personal references and of allusions to the previous intimate relations between Paul and that Church is remarkable. The doubts suggested by this circumstance are increased by the omission of the words for in Ephesus (i I) in several of the best manuscripts of the New Testament; for example, the Vatican and the Sinaitic. This omission is confirmed by certain statements of early writers. Tertullian is authority for the statement that the heretic Marcion declared the letter to be addressed to the Laodiceans. The writings of Origen and of Basil contain statements which indicate that they knew of texts which omitted the words for in Ephesus. Nevertheless these suggestions of doubt are only sporadic, and the large preponderance of historical proof both in the form of textual evidence and ancient testi mony is in favor of Ephesus as the destination of the epistle. Book Synopsis Holiness in the Letters of Paul by : J. Ayodeji Adewuya
Download or read book Holiness in the Letters of Paul written by J. Ayodeji Adewuya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's understanding of holiness stems from the holiness of God as revealed in the Old Testament. Using varied terminology, Paul describes the holiness that should characterize the believers as the people of God. God expects moral integrity of his people, because he has provided believers with his Holy Spirit to enable them to live exemplary, Christlike lives in this present world, though polluted, as they prepare for the world to come. Believers, who, like Paul, anticipate the Parousia, must not only desire but also pray that holiness becomes a reality in their lives, cognizant of the fact that holiness is a matter of practice, not merely a status that one attains upon justification. Thus, holiness is an imperative for the people of God.

Book Synopsis John Calvin as Biblical Commentator by : John R. "Jack" Walchenbach
Download or read book John Calvin as Biblical Commentator written by John R. "Jack" Walchenbach and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2009 brought with it the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, a global celebration. With this commemorative event came a new and renewed appreciation for the life and thought of the French Reformer and his profound impact on the world. Scholars universally have acknowledged that while "The Theologian of Geneva" is mostly appreciated for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, it is Calvin as a biblical commentator that needs to be taken with revised interest. When Calvin first set out to write a commentary on virtually every book of the Bible, he was drawn to the exegetical work of the great Greek Patriarch of the fourth century, John Chrysostom, because of his "straightforward, non-allegorical approach to the genuine, simple sense of the text." It was also the method of Chrysostom to which Calvin was attracted, "a continuous exposition" that explains each verse. Calvin, in his life long work to produce commentaries on sacred Scripture, sought to emulate the approach and method of the amazing early church theologian, John Chrysostom. This book celebrates Calvin as Biblical commentator, and what he saw in the literary work of the Greek Father that was so influential on Calvin's immense contribution to our understanding the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week study lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on each and every page of the Bible. The books of Colossians and Philemon complement each other as two New Testament texts that gloriously display the gospel and its implications for how God’s people should live today. Written around the same time, both letters resonate with the apostle Paul’s overriding passion to magnify Jesus Christ as the supreme manifestation of God’s redemptive purposes.
