Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Cholera: From the Earliest Periods to the Year 1817 The appearance of Cholera in Egypt during the present year, and its continued prevalence there, have excited fresh interest in that disease. A re-issue of this work, which appeared originally in 1872, may therefore perhaps prove acceptable now, especially while so many problems respecting the aetiology and the treatment of Cholera remain unsolved. The book treats of only one portion of the subject of cholera: it is merely a collection of facts gathered from all available sources, and is not written in support of any particular theoretical views or opinions. Yet, as the study of its past history ought to throw some light on the present of the disease, it may possibly, from the large amount of ground which it goes over, help to give a breadth of view in considering the questions connected with the subject, which is at present rather wanting in our discussions. Book excerpt: Research on cholera has contributed both to knowledge of the epidemic in particular, and to a broader understanding of the fundamental ways in which cells communicate with each other. This volume presents current knowledge in historical perspective to enable the practitioner to treat cholera in a more effective manner, and to provide a comprehensive review for the researcher.

Book excerpt: Only in recent years has it been revealed that V. cholerae is a normal inhabitant of esturine and riverine waters. This means that even if the disease can be eliminated from human population by vaccines etc. the vibrio will continue to survive independently in the environment. It is likely that the environment is the source of epidemic strains. This is the first book to focus on the implication of these discoveries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cholera is a frightening disease. Victims are wracked by stomach cramps and suffer intense diarrhoea. Death can come within hours. Though now seeming a distant memory in Europe, which suffered several epidemics in the 19th century before John Snow identified the link with water, it is still a serious threat in many parts of the world - Zimbabwe is a recent example. Snow's discovery was one of the great breakthroughs of epidemiology and a wonderful story from the history of science. Later came the discovery of the culprit organism - Cholera vibrio - understanding of its life cycle, and the development of a vaccine. But the problem of cholera has not disappeared. This book tells the story of cholera, and looks at both the medical success in the West, and the different attitudes to the disease in countries in which it is prevalent as opposed to those in which it put in a temporary appearance. Unlike other books on cholera, which focus on the experience of particular countries, Christopher Hamlin's account draws together the experiences from various countries, both those that were colonies and those that were not. Cholera: the biography is part of the Oxford series, Biographies of Diseases, edited by William and Helen Bynum. In each individual volume an expert historian or clinician tells the story of a particular disease or condition throughout history - not only in terms of growing medical understanding of its nature and cure, but also shifting social and cultural attitudes, and changes in the meaning of the name of the disease itself.
