Book excerpt: Although the distant origins of medieval Central Europe have enjoyed constant interest among historians, only marginal attention has been paid to the power and political prerequisites for the first Westernization, i.e. the gradual adoption of the values, norms and patterns of behavior of the Latin West by the communities (gentes) around the eastern edge of the Carolingian and subsequently Holy Roman Empires. Such a gap in knowledge, long overlooked, is now being filled by The Making of Medieval Central Europe: Power and Political Prerequisites for the First Westernization, 791-1122. While respecting the state of research and based on an original analysis of the sources, this book offers an informed reflection of a complex dialogue that was initiated after the collapse of the Avar Khaganate at the end of the 8th century and that, by the beginning of the 12th century, gave rise to a Central Europe that was Westernized (i.e. turned toward the West) yet in many ways distinctive. Another and no less important added value of this book is the author's conscious effort to overcome the narrow interpretive matrices defined by the national interests of the time.

While reading sources for a planned survey of medieval Poland, Bo hemia, Hungary, and Croatia, it became apparent to me that many current presentations of the history of Bohemia and Moravia were not based on viable evidence. Sources pertaining to the lives of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, as well as those for the study of Moravia, had been subjected to unwarranted interpretations or emendations, other sources of significance had been entirely omitted from considera tion, and finally, crucial formulations concerning Cyril and Methodius and Moravian history had been made in recent historiography without any basis in sources. Hen:e this study: an exercise in confronting the axioms of modern histori( 'graphy, philology and archaeology with the testimony of sources. My study is more of all introduction to the problems of Moravia's history than a set of fim 1 definitions and solutions. It will lead, ne cessarily, to a series of enquiries into the early history of several nations of East Central Europe, of the Church history of that region, and of various disciplines connected with the study of the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy.

Writing history was a collaborative enterprise integral to the life and identity of medieval monastic communities, but it was not an activity for which time and resources were set aside routinely. Each act of historiographical production constituted an extraordinary event, one for which singular provision had to be made, workers and materials assigned, time carved out from the monastic routine, and licence granted. This allocation of human and material resources was the responsibility and prerogative of the monastic superior. Drawing on a wide and diverse range of primary evidence gathered from across the medieval Latin West, this book is the first to investigate systematically how and why abbots and abbesses exercised their official authority and resources to lay the foundations on which their communities' historiographical traditions were built by themselves and others. It showcases them as prolific authors, patrons, commissioners, project managers, and facilitators of historical narratives who not only regularly put pen to parchment personally, but also, and perhaps more importantly, enabled others inside and outside their communities by granting them the resources and licence to write. Revealing the intrinsic relationship between abbatial authority and the writing of history in the Middle Ages with unprecedented clarity, Benjamin Pohl urges us to revisit and revise our understanding of monastic historiography, its processes, and its protagonists in ways that require some radical rethinking of the medieval historian's craft in communal and institutional contexts.

Book excerpt: A damaging earthquake with intensity VII MSK and local magni= tude 5. 1 occurred on November 8, 1983, at 0:49 GMT near the Belgium town of Liege in the border region between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. This most severe earthquake in the northwestern part of Central Europe since more than thirty years has well been recorded by the dense seismic station network in West Germany which consists of more than twenty stations situated in the Lower Rhine Embayment and in the adjoining Rhenish Massif. Most of the stations are equipped with modern digital recording systems. Thus high-quality seismograms are available from the region east and southeast of the epicenter covering a distance range between 70 km and 144 km. From these data the source characteristics of the Liege mainshock and of its largest after= shock have been determined in order to get more information on the seismotectonic processes causing the Liege events. 2. Seismic Station Network During the period of 1976 to 1982 the seismic station network in the Lower Rhine Embayment and in the Rhenish Massif was consi= derably enlarged and mostly equipped with digital recording systems (Figure 1). At present there are more than twenty stations in operation. Most of them are operated by the Department of Earthquake Geology of the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne and the Geo= logical Survey of Nordrhein-Westfalen at Krefeld.
