G. Wells' Ann Veronica, first published in 1909, looks at political and feminist issues of the time. It's heroine goes from being a naive young girl into becoming a picture of the New Woman. The novel caused a stir when it was released because of the main character's feminist outlook and because her name was similar to Amber Reeves, with whom Wells was thought to be having an affair.Coycoy brings great works of literature from the past centuries, holding the highest standards and reproduce the text as its earliest readers would have encountered it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of J. Henry Rushton, a native of northern New York State who became world famous as a builder of canoes. He and his craft were at the center of notable events in canoeing history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rushton was born in 1843 in a small settlement on the edge of the Adirondack wilderness. In his thirties, seeking to cure himself of "consumption" in the mountain air, he built a boat for a trip into the woods. Tradition has it friends asked Rushton to build boats for them, too, and his career was started. Rushton was fortunate in his patrons. In 1880 he was approached by the outdoor writer, George Washington Sears, better known by his pen name 11Nessmuk.'' A frail man, Nessmuk asked Rushton to build him an exceptionally lightweight canoe. Nessmuk's solitary tours of Adirondack waterways in the 10 3⁄4-pound Sairy Gamp set a new trend in sports life. His letters in the journal Forest and Stream did much to popularize unguided travel through the wilderness and to spread Rushton's fame. Many illustrations, including two previously unpublished sketches by Frederic Remington, help tell the story here. Five appendixes include Rushton's catalog descriptions of his construction methods; a reprint of an article by Nessmuk, an account of the Rushton canoes extant today, drawings and specifications of seven of these extant canoes, and a lengthy discussion by Harry Rushton of his father's methods of craftsmanship.

Book Synopsis The Buffalo Book by : David Dary

Book excerpt: The journals and memoirs of nineteenth-century explorers and travelers in the American West often told of viewing buffalo massed together as far as the eye could see. This book appropriately covers the subject of the buffalo as extensively as that animal covered the plains. Other recent accounts of the buffalo have focused on two or three aspects, emphasizing its natural history, the hunters and the hunted in prehistoric time, the relationship between the buffalo and the American Indian. David Dary's treatment stretches from horizon to horizon. Of course he discusses the origin of the buffalo in North America, its locations and migrations, its habits, its significance and role in both Indian and white cultures, its near demise, its salvation. But more. Dary weaves throughout his fact-filled book fascinating threads of lore and legend of this animal that literally helped mold who and what America is. Further, in addition to detailing the extinction which almost befell this mythic beast and the attempts to give life again to the herds, Dary concentrates significant attention on the buffalo as part of twentieth-century America in terms of captivity, husbandry, and symbol. The Buffalo Book rounds up all the contemporary buffalo. Dary has located just about every single buffalo alive today in the United States. He has visited or corresponded with everyone who raises a private or government herd, small or large. He maps their location, size, purpose, future. There are even some instructions about how to raise buffalo if one is so inclined. For the gourmet, The Buffalo Book provides a number of recipes, such as Sweetgrass Buffalo and Beer Pie or Buffalo Tips à la Bourgogne. From the buffalo nickel to Wyoming's state flag, from the University of Colorado's mascot to Indiana's state seal, we picture and use the buffalo in hundreds of ways; Dary surveys the nineteenth- and twentieth-century symbolic adaptation of the animal.

Book excerpt: At an unspecified time in the near future, the world has enjoyed decades of peace and prosperity thanks to the world-wide dissemination of an anti-violence vaccine that was invented by a ruthless industrialist named Nolebody. When scientists discover that the vaccine has a half-life -- and that this half-life has already been reached -- the administration is not prepared to keep order, since the military has been disbanded and no one knows how to operate the obsolete weaponry. In a cynical plot to restore stability, the government's leaders resolve to award the nation's highest honour, the Nolebody Award, on a reclusive, somewhat dim-witted man who lives in a shack in the desert and fashions sculptures from feathers, dead lizards, and other found objects. Leonard Bentwood's simple life and values are touted as the epitome of good citizenship and national pride. The unwitting Bentwood accepts, and travels to the capital to accept the award. In a staggering example of the power of unintended consequences, his acceptance speech triggers a revolution that sweeps the government from power. This wise and thoughtful fable entertains as it lampoons governments of every stripe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the twentieth- and beginning of the twenty-first centuries have witnessed a large scale increase in demands for international peace keeping mechanisms. Because of a complex history of spread and power, English has become the de facto lingua franca of international communication and negotiation, and the inevitable accompaniment to this is the growth in hostility against the perceived imperialism of the English language. This book argues that the growth of English(es) as a lingua franca has the potential to foster closer bonds between communities, countries and continents. Using the background methodology of Peace Studies, Patricia Friedrich applies political theory to linguistic evidence, to show how English can be instrumental both in the restoration of peace and in the building of social justice. In this analysis, the language classroom emerges as a central site in conflict prevention. A fascinating, innovative study of the place of the English language in the modern world, this book will be of interest to academics researching applied linguistics or world Englishes.
